DAVENPORT, Iowa – April 20, 2016 – Genesis Medical Center, Davenport is a recipient of the 2016 Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™.

Patient Safety Excellence Award recipients were determined by evaluating the occurrence of observed incidents and expected performance for 14 Patient Safety Indicators as defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

In addition, Healthgrades released a new digital infographic that identifies key observations regarding patient safety and experience. Findings include:

  • Four types of events make up nearly 75% of all patient safety events reported by hospitals. These include: accidental cut, puncture, or hemorrhage; collapsed lung; infections; and bed sores.

  • Patient safety recipients are always equally or more likely than non-recipient hospitals to have superior outcomes in specialty areas. For example, Patient Safety Excellence Award Recipients are 5.1 times more likely to receive a Specialty Excellence Award for spinal surgery; 3.4 times more likely for Orthopedics overall; and 2.3 times more likely for Pulmonary Care overall.

  • Top performing hospitals in patient experience continuously monitor trends in what patients find important as it relates to their overall assessment of a hospital stay.

“Our analysis reveals that patient safety is strongly associated with high quality care, so it is vitally important to choose a hospital that performs well on these key indicators,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. “In addition, we found that consumers are increasingly using patient experience and satisfaction as a measure to both evaluate hospitals and to select where they want to obtain care, so hospitals need to listen to patients about what matters most in driving patient evaluations of their hospital.”

In 2016, there were 466 hospitals across the nation that achieved the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™. The distinction places this elite group of hospitals within the top 10% of all hospitals evaluated for their excellent performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications during their hospital stays.

Genesis Medical Center, Davenport has received the safety award three consecutive years.

“We are gratified to be recognized for a third consecutive year by an objective source for patient safety,’’ said Nidal Harb, chief medical officer, Genesis Health System. “Genesis is committed to providing exceptional medical care and safe medical care. Throughout Genesis, patient safety is our top priority.’’

On average, 270,457 patient safety events could have been avoided if all hospitals, as a group from 2012 to 2014, performed similarly to hospitals performing better than expected on each of 14 patient safety indicators evaluated by Healthgrades, as well as zero instances of foreign object left during procedure.
