(DES MOINES) – Gov. Terry Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa be flown at half-staff immediately until sunset, on the day of internment, to honor former First Lady Nancy Reagan. Mrs. Reagan, wife of President Ronald Reagan, passed away on Sunday, March 6. If the day of internment occurs over the weekend, the flags are to remain lowered until sunrise on Monday morning.
“I had the honor of getting to know Ronald and Nancy Reagan very well,” said Gov. Branstad. “They were a devoted couple and Nancy was committed to protecting her husband in every way. Chris and I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the Reagan family in this difficult time.”
In conjunction with the White House Directive that was release this morning, the governor’s directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under the control of the state. Flags will be at half-staff on the state Capitol building and on flag displays in the Capitol complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
