CEDAR RAPIDS, IA February 23, 2016 … Iowans for Gun Safety thanks the thirty-six Iowa House members who bravely stood up for gun safety and common sense in front of the gun lobby. The gun controlled House passed a bill to allow children of any age to handle a handgun.  The thirty-six lawmakers were not intimidated by the presence of the NRA lobby and American Suppressor Association who were giving away free t-shirts and other items.

The gun controlled Iowa House passed a bill to allow children of any age to handle a handgun with sixty-seven votes in favor and thirty-six against.  Five Democrats joined the House Republicans in voting for the bill.

"Iowans for Gun Safety thanks the Iowa House members who voted to protect our children from a dangerous and reckless bill that would remove all restrictions on the age a child could handle a gun," said Rev. Cheryl R. Thomas, Policy Director of Iowans for Gun Safety.

"Yesterday’s, debate in the Iowa House demonstrated clearly that the gun lobby and their supporters in Iowa are not concerned at all about gun safety, but only about their extremist views of gun rights."

“The gun lobby has a distorted interpretation of Second Amendment rights that increases the bottom line of those who profit from gun violence.”

Listen to that debate here: Iowa House Debate on Gun Safety Feb 23

In addition to protecting children, many of these same brave legislators: defended public safety during a state of emergency, stood up for common sense and against loaded guns on ATVs and snowmobiles, and voted against legalizing suppressors, thus seeking to protect Iowan's good gun laws.

Iowans for Gun Safety will turn our attention to the Iowa Senate where we will look for brave Senators to stand up to the extremist gun lobby.
