JOHNSTON, IA – February 19, 2016 – The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) recognizes Dave Burmahl and his wife Angie for receiving the ‘Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award’. The award was presented to the Burmahls by Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig in a ceremony with their family, friends, neighbors and community members last week on their farm in rural Jackson County. David is a long time ICGA member.

The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award, sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF), recognizes Iowa livestock farmers who take pride in doing things right.  This includes caring for the environment and their livestock and being good neighbors. CSIF is a valuable partner to ICGA in helping keep Iowa’s livestock industry thriving. The organization helps farmers navigate rules and regulations, assess open feedlots, grow their livestock farms, site new livestock facilities and enhance relationships with neighbors. All services are available to Iowa farm families at no cost and are completely confidential.

The Burmahls have a diversified crop and livestock farm where they raise corn, soybeans and hay and also have a cow-calf herd, feedlot and finish hogs. They apply several conservation practices on their farm including planting 200 acres of cover crops, strip-tilling, contouring and maintaining terraces to protect their fields from erosion and run-off. The couple maintains 15 ponds on their farm and also apply manure back on his field from his 1,200 hogs and 180 beef cattle. Angie is a second grade teacher and every fall they bring the second graders out to their farm.

Craig Schnoor nominated the Burmahls for the award for being a great farm family that has a strong commitment to agriculture advocacy and neighbor relations.
