Rock Island Library Explores History & Fiction of a QC Wild Place, Sylvan Slough & Island

Rock Island, IL: The Rock Island Public Library will host a free program next Thursday to help you learn more about Sylvan Slough, a little slice of wilderness right in our own backyard of Rock Island and Moline.

Sylvan Slough, Fact and Fiction, will be presented by Professor Curtis Roseman and novelist Chuck Oestreich. Roseman will speak on Sylvan Slough / Island's historic, industrial and recreation significance, while Oestreich, the author of "Sylvan Slough," will speak on what inspired him to make the island the setting of his second book. The presentation takes place at 2:00 pm on Thursday, Feb. 25 in the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street. The event is free and open to the public.

Sylvan Slough and Island in Moline and Rock Island is a an abandoned industrial site of nearly 30 acres. Once the site of a steel mill, stone quarry, vegetable gardens, ice making on the river, and an apartment building, the site now includes a naturalized park, fishing areas, a walking/running path, and dirt mountain bike trails.
