Living Lands & Waters (LL&W) is hosting FREE educational workshops this summer in the Quad Cities Area. Four different local high school classes will join LL&W May 16-19 at Illiniwek Forest Preserve in Hampton, IL. The day will start with a brief introduction of Living Lands & Waters, and an interpretive tour of the restoration projects at the Preserve led by Illiniwek’s Park Ranger, Mike Peterson, as well as LL&W’s Invasive Species Project Leader, Dan Breidenstein. Students will then conduct a biodiversity assessment of restored vs. non-restored plots at the Preserve and share their results. Students and chaperones will end the day removing invasive honeysuckle from the grounds.

“We are really excited about working with Illiniwek and getting kids outside to learn about their local ecosystem. We also are still looking for teachers to join us for a great day of professional development on June 7th at our Educator Workshop!” said Educational Coordinator Meghan Elgan.

June will kick off with a free Educator Workshop at Sunset Park, in Rock Island, IL.  LL&W educators will provide teachers with the tools and strategies to easily implement hands-on, environmental science activities to increase student understanding of natural ecosystems. Lunch will be provided, as well as an interpretive boat ride, and activities from “Our Mississippi”. Each educator who participates will receive a free copy of Our Mississippi, with each activity specifically aligned to state and national standards to make it easy for teachers. The guide follows multi-disciplinary curriculum, intermixing science, technology, and math with social science, language and arts to help aid educators in introducing the multifaceted, resource management issues that exist on the river

About Living Lands & Waters – Chad Pregracke started Living Lands & Waters in 1998 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the beautification and restoration of America’s major rivers and the education of environmental issues. From his single boat beginning, LL&W has grown to an industrial strength, internationally known organization with a fleet of barges and workboats.  LL&W engages thousands of volunteers each year in river cleanups, hands-on environmental education workshops, the Great Mississippi River Cleanup, Adopt-a- River-Mile program, Invasive Species Removal, and the Million Trees Project.
