Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement after it was announced that Robert Beardsley was selected to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point next year. Beardsley resides in Bettendorf and attends Pleasant Valley High School. He is the son of Kimberly and Bob Beardsley. Loebsack nominated Beardsley last year with the final decision made by the Academy.

“Each year, I look forward to nominating outstanding future leaders, like Robert, to attend our nation’s service academies. His selection is recognition of his hard work and determination,” said Loebsack. “As a military parent with children who attended a service academy, this selection means a lot to me, as I know it does to Robert and his family. Every Iowan should be proud of his future service to our nation.”

Each year, Loebsack nominates up to ten Iowans for every opening at each Academy, with final selection for admission made by the individual Academy from that group of ten. Our nation’s Service Academies offer educational opportunities for young people interested in military service. Students can specialize in a variety of fields at the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, as well as at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Air Force Academy at Colorado Spring.
