Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today in response to the House Republicans’ change in the appropriations process and the vote to pass the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act of 2017.
“Iowans expect their Members of Congress to come to Washington and work together to get things done. Part of getting things done includes taking hard votes. Iowans deserve to know where their representatives stand, and the actions by Speaker Ryan and the Republican leadership to abandon any sense of openness and transparency is despicable. By closing down the appropriations process, Republican leaders are using the legislative process to discriminate against LGBT individuals. Discrimination should have no place in the House of Representatives.
“On top of closing down the process and using the legislative process to discriminate, the Republican leadership has prioritized the wants of Congress ahead of the needs of the American people. It is unacceptable that the Speaker and House leaders find it appropriate to fund their own offices before they pass any bill to provide funds for our service members, veterans, educators, seniors and children. The people of Iowa expect and deserve more from those they elected to be their voice in Washington.”
