Following the Committee on Political Education’s (C.O.P.E.) “Endorsement” in the third congressional district of Jim Mowrer, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) in Iowa and Iowa State Council of Machinists President John Herrig released the following statement:

“Today it is my privilege to announce that the Iowa State Council of Machinists—with District Lodge 6 and all its affiliated local lodges—is giving its full endorsement to Jim Mowrer in Iowa’s Third Congressional District. Jim has shown that he is a natural leader with a clear vision to help working families and to maintain the middle-class which is the bedrock our economy. We look forward to helping Jim in every way possible to ensure that his run for office is a big success.”

The Machinists voted to endorse Mowrer at their State Council Meeting on February 7, 2016—he was the only candidate in Iowa’s CD003 to show up at the event held in Des Moines. But, according to Herrig, the council held back from going public until after the C.O.P.E. Convention. “We don’t publicly announce our endorsements until after the Iowa Federation of Labor has made their endorsements because they are the blanket political voice of organized labor and we respect that.”
