Rock Island, IL: Time Out Chicago calls Laura Doherty "one of the four best children's musicians in Chicago," but you don't have to travel far to experience one of her engaging, playful concerts. Instead, make tracks to the Rock Island Main Library on Thursday, June 30 at 10:00 am for a free concert for children and families.
Doherty will perform selections from her new Animal Tracks CD, which includes three new songs along with crowd-pleasing favorites such as Jazzasaurus, Rockin' at the Zoo, and Domingo the Flamingo. The guitarist and singer performed many of those songs to large audiences at the Rock Island Library's August 2015 Hug-A-Book early learning events.
The nationally touring children's recording artist has an ear for a catchy melody. Her previous CD, In a Heartbeat, won a Notable Children's Recording award from the American Library Association in 2015 and a Parent's Choice Silver award in 2014. The upbeat, heartfelt acoustic songs hark back to Doherty's folk-pop background with teaching staff of the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.
A guitarist since age 16, Doherty left her hometown of Westchester, NY, to settle in Chicago after college. For more than a decade, she was the Director of the Old Town School’s early-childhood Wiggleworms program. In 2009, she went full-time with kids’ music, creating sweet, folk-inspired songs for children and families.
Before recording her own original children’s music, she co-produced Old Town School’s Wiggleworms Love You (2005), and has recorded educational songs for Disney Sound, with indie rocker Ralph Covert of Ralph’s World.
The children's show is free and open to the public, and is at the library's downtown location, 401 19th Street. The performance is one of several activities offered as part of the Rock Island Library's
On Your Mark, Get Set, READ summer activities program for children, teens and adults. Reading contests for all ages run until July 16.
