Cancer Transitions – Moving Beyond Treatment

Davenport, IA – April 2016 – Gilda’s Club and Genesis Cancer Care Institute are partnering to offer Cancer Transitions™. The workshop begins Tuesday, April 19th (meets for 6 weeks) from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Gilda’s Club Quad Cities (1234 East River Drive, Davenport, Iowa).

Cancer Transitions is a free 2 hour, six-week workshop designed to help cancer survivors make the transition from active treatment to post-treatment care. Expert panelists including an oncology nurse navigator, nutritionist and physical therapist; will discuss exercise tailored to each participant’s abilities, training in relaxation and stress management and tips for nutritious eating. Cancer Transitions will answer many of your questions about cancer survivorship post-cancer treatment.

Session 1: Get Back to Wellness: Take Control of Your Survivorship

Session 2: Exercise for Wellness: Customized Exercise

Session 3: Emotional Health and Well-Being: From Patient to Survivor

Session 4: Nutrition Beyond Cancer

Session 5: Medical Management Beyond Cancer: What You Need to Know

Session 6: Life Beyond Cancer

Wellness Series April 2016 Featuring Lori Caruso

Davenport, IA – April 2016 –Gilda’s Club is hosting a Wellness Series facilitated by Lori Caruso on Tuesday April 5th and April 26th at 6:30 pm at Gilda’s Club Quad Cities (1234 East River Drive, Davenport, IA).

Tea Testing, Tuesday, April 5th, 6:30 pm
Participants will sample a variety of teas and learn the medicinal effects of each: Green Tea (boosts metabolism/contains antioxidants), White Tea (anti-bacterial/anti-viral), Black Tea (lowers blood pressure/treats heart disease), Mint Tea (treats bloating/aids digestion).

Bee Kind and Use Honey, Tuesday, April 26th, 6:30 pm

Participants will learn the benefits of Manuka honey for use on compromised skin as well as the positive effects on the body. Learn tapping techniques to restore balance and energy and how to do a “Honey Tap” facial using Manuka honey.

Lori is a 35-year veteran of the beauty industry and is a licensed Cosmetologist, Esthetician, and Instructor. She has owned and managed salons, medical spas, and dermatology clinics. Lori also has special training in hair pieces and wigs, certified in Esthetic Oncology. She is a regular guest expert on “Paula Sands Live!”

Camp Genesis 2016 Applications

DAVENPORT, IA – April 2016 –Camp Genesis is a FREE camp for kids ages 6-16 coping with a cancer diagnosis in their family held June 26 – July 1 at YMCA Camp Abe Lincoln (1624 West Front Street, Blue Grass, IA).

This year’s deadline to apply is Friday, April 29th. Please call Gilda’s Club at 563-326-7504 or email anita@gildasclubqc.org. We are also accepting applications online at www.gildasclubqc.org.

Parents, please note that it is necessary to complete an application form for your child/children to be considered to attend Camp Genesis. A selection committee will narrow down applicants to 40 campers. All families will be notified by May 9, 2016. A Registration packet will be sent at a later date to the 40 selected campers.

At Camp Genesis, kids will have the opportunity to be kids again. Many of the children in families who have been affected by cancer are forced to grow up very quickly. During the week of Camp Genesis, they will be able to forget about some of those responsibilities and just be a kid again. As a parent, you know that your child will be in a safe environment and building relationships with other campers who are going through similar situations.

Activities:

  • Attending campfires

  • Field trip to Genesis Cancer Care Institute

  • Sessions with Gilda’s club staff

YMCA Camp Abe Lincoln

The staff come from across the globe and are required to be 18 years of age or graduated from high school. They are put through a rigorous training program to ensure the safety and quality program that you are looking for as a parent. Camp Abe Lincoln is a nationally accredited camp by the American Camping Association (ACA), and keeps up to date with the newest safety techniques as well as program regulations.
