For the second year in a row, OSF Healthcare System has been ranked as one of the top performing health care systems in the country by Truven, an independent health care analytics research company.

OSF HealthCare is ranked in the top 20 percent of large health care systems in the United States, and the only one in that category in Illinois, based on publicly reported data. Rankings are updated yearly, with the most recent data from 2014. Hospital systems are categorized by financial size so comparison is fair. Truven reviewed 101 large systems.

“OSF HealthCare is proud to be recognized again by Truven as a top performing health care system,” said Kevin Schoeplein, OSF HealthCare CEO. “We appreciate the recognition and unbiased confirmation of the great work all of our Mission Partners perform for the communities we serve each and every day.”

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center (Peoria), OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center (Rockford), OSF St. Joseph Medical Center (Bloomington), OSF Saint James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center (Pontiac), OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center (Ottawa), and OSF St. Mary Medical Center (Galesburg) were included in the Truven analysis.

Ten categories were measured, including patient safety, patient mortality, readmission rates, average length of stay, complications, and overall patient satisfaction. Those found to be top performing systems overall saved more lives and caused fewer patient complications, followed industry-recommended standards of care more closely, released patients from the hospital sooner, and readmitted patients less frequently.

“Across OSF HealthCare, we continuously identify and address issues to enhance the health and well-being of those we serve,” said Stephen Hippler, M.D., OSF HealthCare Chief Clinical Officer. “We have developed collaborative workgroups around our surgical care which has led to improved surgical safety; we have teams working to reduce healthcare infections in the hospital and to date have decreased the number of urinary catheter days by almost 1,000 with a resultant decrease in hospital acquired urinary tract infections. These are just a few examples of the constant work our Mission Partners do to provide the safest care.”
