Rock Island, IL – February 17, 2016: On February 16th, in pursuit of the Rock Island Preservation Society’s mission to advocate for preservation of our built environment through public education, research of historic buildings and sites and registration of significant historical places with local, state and federal authorities, the society is excited to announce that an application for landmark designation for the Denkmann-Hauberg Estate (Hauberg Civic Center) has been submitted to the Rock Island Preservation
Commission.

A Rock Island Landmark is a property or structure designated by the Preservation Commission that is worthy of rehabilitation, restoration and preservation because of its historic and/or architectural significance to the City of Rock Island. Designation of landmarked properties is governed by the Rock Island Preservation Ordinance, adopted by the Rock Island City Council in 1984 and amended in 1986—the first preservation ordinance in the Quad Cities.

A Rock Island Landmark designation provides protection through the Certificate of Appropriateness process to exterior architectural features of a structure. A Certificate of appropriateness is a resolution passed by the Rock Island Preservation Commission that certifies an alteration to a Rock Island Landmark property as “appropriate.” This review process is in place to maintain the integrity of buildings designated as Rock Island Landmarks. Other benefits of Landmark designation can include retention of historic Rock Island structures, eligibility for the Property Tax Assessment Freeze Program offered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, increased awareness of historic properties, pride and interest in the structure by the community and increased tourism potential.

The application will now be reviewed by the Rock Island Preservation Commission to gather as many facts and details about the property as possible prior to making a binding designation decision.
