Rock Island, IL: The Rock Island Public Library's Hug A Book program series will offer two early learning programs this spring for young children under five and their families.
Children ages two to five can sing into literacy on Thursday, Feb. 18, with children's music presented by Rock Island musician Chris Dunn. The free sing-a-long and dance event is at 6:00 pm inside the Rock Island Main Library Children's Room, 401 19th Street. Singing is one the 5 ways to build a very ready reader."Singing is a great tool for teaching literacy skills to young children. Singing helps introduce new words and develop important communication skills," says Susan Foster, Rock Island Library children's services director.
In March, children's library staff take the Hug A Book program on the road by offering a free Hug a Book Garden Storytime on Thursday, March 3 at the QC Botanical Center, 2525 4th Avenue. Families with children under five can grow a reader with stories, songs and crafts for preschoolers. The event starts at 10:30 am, and admission to the Botanical Center is included.
Every child attending either Hug A Book event receives a free book to keep. The Hug A Book program has grown from one annual event to a series of four events offered throughout the year, thanks to sponsorship by the Merrill Harris fund of the Rock Island Public Library Foundation.
