HILLSDALE, Ill. – To increase awareness and acceptance for individuals living with autism, state Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillside, is reminding residents to celebrate National Autism Month this April.

“Each year during April, we celebrate National Autism Awareness Month and World Autism Day to promote awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all,” Smiddy said. “This month is a time for people to gain a better understanding of this developmental disorder and the importance of early diagnosis and intervention.”

Autism now affects 1 in 68 children, and with no medical detection or cure, it is one of the fastest-growing developmental disorders in the nation. During the month of April, organizations throughout the world come together to promote awareness, encourage acceptance and to recognize the unique talents and gifts of all individuals on the autism spectrum.

Last year, Rep. Smiddy voted to restore millions of state dollars for The Autism Program and Early Intervention Programs after Gov. Rauner eliminated needed funding for thousands of children and their families who depend on services such as screening and diagnosis, family services, training programs, specialized consultations, and support groups.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, and early intervention programs allow trained specialists to work with individuals living with autism and their families to improve their quality of life,” Smiddy said. “Funding for these vital programs needs to be a top priority and I will continue to work with my colleagues and all stakeholders to make sure the needs of Illinois most vulnerable citizens are met.”
