PORT BYRON, Ill. – State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, joined students and staff at Riverdale Middle School to talk about the value of community service and the responsibilities of state legislators at the school’s Career Day on Thursday.
“Learning about the ways their neighbors have been successful can help students understand the options that are available to them when they think about the future,” Smiddy said. “I think it’s really important to show students the types of careers they can attain if they take their education seriously, and I commend Riverdale School District for making an effort to start that process for these students.”
Riverdale’s Career Day is designed to encourage middle-school students to begin thinking about the various careers that are available in the region and the responsibilities and training required to attain them. Students had the opportunity to attend seminars with a variety of professionals to learn more about the job requirements and responsibilities in a variety of careers. Smiddy discussed the lawmaking process, what State Representatives do, provided some information about current events and the election process with the students.
“It’s never too early to introduce children to current events and to the roles of public service in our community and our state,” Smiddy said. “I was honored to talk with the students at Riverdale about what it means to serve in the General Assembly, and I hope they gained a better understanding of Illinois government and how they can get involved to make a difference for others.”
