SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is continuing support for the men and women who serve our nation in the military by voting to ensure that those who impersonate and falsely represent themselves as a service member for financial gain will be punished appropriately.

“Our veterans make great sacrifices for the well-being of our country and they deserve our honor and respect,” Smiddy said. “It is unacceptable and reprehensive that there are people who falsely present themselves as members of our armed forces.”

A recent legislative measure passed the Illinois House and Senate regarding the issue of false military presentation. The Smiddy-backed bill would punish a person who knowingly and falsely represents himself or herself to be an active-duty member or veteran of the United States military. The measure is known as the “Stolen Valor” law attempts to discourage individuals from fraudulently presenting themselves as military members to take advantage of the benefits Illinois offers to veterans after their service.

“The brave men and women who make sacrifices to serve our country have earned the respect and benefits that come with their service, and we have to carefully guard against the attempts of criminals to exploit this respect for their own gain,” Smiddy said.  “I’ll continue to fight for the rights of military member, veterans and their families and ensure they get the support and respect they deserve.”

Senate Bill 2167 has passed the General Assembly and has been sent to the governor for his approval. For more information, contact Smiddy’s full-time constituent service office at 309-848-9098 or email RepSmiddy@gmail.com
