Seventy-six years ago, the first Social Security check was issued. That first check represented our nation’s commitment to fulfilling the Social Security Act’s promise to provide economic security to our nation’s seniors. Seniors have worked their entire lives to earn peace of mind, certainty, and stability in retirement.
Having been raised in poverty, I know what it’s like to sit around the kitchen table and make tough decisions. I believe no Iowan should have to make the choice between putting food on the table and paying for their medications. My grandmother often relied on Social Security survivors’ benefits to care for my siblings and me, so I understand on a deeply personal level how important it is to preserve Social Security for the millions of Americans who have paid into the program and are counting on it.
That’s why I have long worked to strengthen and improve Social Security. We must ensure Iowans who worked hard and paid into this important initiative get the benefits they have earned.
As Congress begins working on its annual budget, please know that I will not compromise on Social Security’s promise. I firmly believe that no senior should face the possibility of retiring into poverty. We must keep the promise that we have made to our seniors.
My office is also here to help seniors and their families cut through bureaucratic red tape at the Social Security Administration (SSA). If you are having any issues and believe my office can be of assistance to you, please contact my Iowa City office at (319) 351-0789.
Sincerely,
