What:    Tax-Credit Scholarship Audit by EdChoice indicates major savings to Iowa taxpayers through School Tuition Organization Tax Credit

When:        Released October 31, 2016

Who:        The over 10,000 students receiving a School Tuition Organization tuition grant each year and Iowa taxpayers

At Iowa Alliance for Choice in Education (Iowa ACE) we support parental choice in education as a pathway to academic success.  The savings these programs create at the state level doesn't usually draw much attention.   As our legislators prepare for the coming legislative session and deal with educational funding, it's important that they - and their constituents - understand the fiscal benefits of educational choice.

EdChoice just released an important new report that analyzes the taxpayer dollars saved by 10 tax-credit scholarship programs in seven states, including Iowa, between 1997 and 2014, in The Tax-Credit Scholarship Audit, authored by EdChoice's Director of Fiscal Policy and Analysis Dr. Martin Lueken.
Here are some Iowa highlights from the study -

* The Iowa School Tuition Organization Tax Credit saves taxpayers between $3,600 and $5,900 for each student participating in the program
* During the ten years since it began, the STO Tax Credit program has saved taxpayers between $280 million and $461 million
* In 2014 alone, the program saved Iowa tax payers nearly $61 million
