AMANA, Iowa- The gardeners of the Amana Colonies will show off their work at the 2nd annual “Colonies in Bloom” this summer on June 25th and July 30th. Anyone with a green thumb will love this opportunity to view 18 private gardens that will be open to the public on these two days.
The Amana Colonies have long been known for their beautiful flower gardens. The flower gardens have become an Amana tradition since the end of the communal era in 1932. Prior to this time the residents were discouraged from planting flowers. “Residents of the Colonies take great pride in their gardens and flowers” says ACCVB Executive Director, David Rettig
One of the gardens that will be open to the public was recently featured in the May/June 2016 issue of Midwest Living. This impressive garden is just one of several extensive gardens/yards highlighted by “Colonies in Bloom”.
Colonies in Bloom has been expanded to two dates this year so visitors can see the changes that take place as spring moves into summer and each variety of flower hits its peak. Some yards feature very traditional Amana Colonies planting and other more unusual plants. The gardeners will be present at each home to answer questions. This is a FREE event.
Maps of the “Colonies in Bloom” homes are available at the Amana Visitor Center and selected businesses in the Amana Colonies.
