AMANA, Iowa- The gardeners of the Amana Colonies will show off their work at the 2nd annual “Colonies in Bloom” this summer on July 30th. Anyone with a green thumb will love this opportunity to view 18 private gardens that will be open to the public.
The Amana Colonies have long been known for their beautiful flower gardens. The flower gardens have become an Amana tradition since the end of the communal era in 1932. Prior to this time the residents were discouraged from planting flowers. “Residents of the Colonies take great pride in their gardens and flowers” says ACCVB Executive Director, David Rettig
One of the gardens that will be open to the public was recently featured in the May/June 2016 issue of Midwest Living. This impressive garden is just one of several extensive gardens/yards highlighted by “Colonies in Bloom”. Some yards feature very traditional Amana Colonies plantings and other more unusual plants. The gardeners will be present at each home to answer questions. This is a FREE event.
Maps of the “Colonies in Bloom” homes are available at the Amana Visitor Center and selected businesses in the Amana Colonies.
The historical Amana Colonies Lily Lake has been in full bloom since early July and is a must see for visitors to the area
