WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa said today that Andrew Wilson Shumway of Des Moines has received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., for the 2016-2017 school year.
Shumway is the son of Ellen and Scott Shumway. He will graduate in May from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. He has participated in swimming, tennis and marching band, was a member of the Central Academy Math Team, and served as vice president of the concert band. He has also volunteered with Everybody Wins Iowa, works as a summer lifeguard, and participates in scuba diving, fly fishing and biking.
“Students work very hard to earn this kind of opportunity. Admission to the service academies is highly competitive and a great honor,” Grassley said. “I wish Andrew well and thank him for his commitment to serve our nation.”
Shumway was among the 41 Iowans Grassley nominated this year for appointments to the U.S. service academies. Upon receiving an appointment, the student then decides whether to attend the academy. Information about seeking nominations can be found on Grassley’s website.
For more than 200 years, these academies have educated and trained individuals to lead and command the U.S. armed forces.

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said today that John Logan Buck, Jr. of Dallas Center has received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., for the 2016-2017 school year.
Buck is the son of John Buck, Sr. and the late Lorelle Buck of Dallas Center. He will graduate in May from Dallas Center-Grimes High School. Buck has participated in football, wrestling, Boys’ State and the Central Academy Mathematics Team. He is a member of the National Honor Society, student council, Key Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also participates in hunting and photography.
