Iowa’s Unemployment Rate Decreases to 2.7 Percent in April Labor Force Participation Increases Again

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 19, 2023) — Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 2.7 percent in April from 2.8 percent in March while the state’s labor force added 4,300 new workers. The total number of Iowans with jobs increased to 1,681,400 in April, up 5,800 from the month before.

In comparison, the US unemployment rate dropped to 3.4 percent in March.

State Treasurer Roby Smith Returns Money from Great Iowa Treasure Hunt to Cedar Valley Humane Society

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 18, 2023) — A check worth over $7,000 from the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt was presented to Cedar Valley Humane Society (CVHS) by State Treasurer Roby Smith. "I am thrilled to reunite CVHS with this money to help them continue to operate their business and care for animals," said Smith. "I'm a huge animal-lover myself, and knowing this money will help shelter and care for animals gives me great joy!"

Spread across two types of programs, the funding is expected to support the experiences of 5,206 apprentices in a wide number of occupations.

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 1, 2023) — Governor Kim Reynolds has announced new grant awards to help jumpstart youth internships in high-demand fields across Iowa. The Summer Youth Internship Program provides funding to employers, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations who sponsor meaningful internship programs for Iowa’s youth between the ages of 14 and 24.

Dubuque Teamsters Demand County Offer Workers Fair Contract

DUBUQUE, IOWA (April 28, 2023) — With a contract expiring July 1 for nearly fifty public-sector workers in Dubuque County, Teamsters Local 120 has spent the last several weeks negotiating a new deal for members. In a blow to these essential workers, the Dubuque County Board of Supervisors have proposed a contract that would strip workers’ contracts down and remove critical language about seniority, vacation time, and other benefits.
