DES MOINES, IA (09/16/2015)(readMedia)-- State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald's Great Iowa Treasure Hunt's fall publication is scheduled to be released soon. "The upcoming publication has the most up-to-date unclaimed property listings in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, so make sure to search, even if you've checked before. A lot of Iowans may be pleasantly surprised," said Fitzgerald. "You may also search for your name any time by visiting GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov."

The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program has returned over $198 million in unclaimed property to more than 468,000 individuals since Fitzgerald started it in 1983. Unclaimed property refers to money and other assets held by financial institutions or companies that have lost contact with the property's owner for a specific period of time. State law requires these institutions and companies to annually report and deliver unclaimed property to the state treasurer's office, where it is held until the owner or heir of the property is found. Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility security deposits, safe deposit box contents and many other types of property.

Lt. Governor unveils the designation at the community's Bus Tour and Official's Cookout

(WEST DES MOINES) - Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds announced last night that West Des Moines has achieved the Home Base Iowa Community designation. West Des Moines is now the 21st community in the state to achieve this recognition. The designation was unveiled at the community's Bus Tour and Official's Cookout, an event designed to showcase West Des Moines' newest projects and expansion plans, as well as the opportunity to network with business leaders and elected officials from local, state and federal government.

"It is such an honor to add another Home Base Iowa community to the list," said Reynolds. "Iowa counties and cities are really stepping up to support the Home Base Iowa effort. We are so proud to offer such a warm welcome to veterans and transitioning service members."

Home Base Iowa connects transitioning military members and veterans with career opportunities in Iowa companies. The state of Iowa has a lot to offer veterans and transitioning service members including no state taxes on military pension, a cost of living below the national average and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation. To date, members of the Iowa Business Council, Iowa's largest employers, have hired more than 1,300 employees through Home Base Iowa.

"As we travel around the state, we hear from our businesses that they need skilled workers," commented Governor Terry Branstad. "Veterans and transitioning military members are exactly the kind of employees that our companies need. They show up equipped with skills including teamwork, dedication, a strong work ethic and problem-solving abilities that have been tested in some of the toughest situations imaginable."

Home Base Iowa designates qualified communities as centers of opportunity for military veterans based on four standards: 10 percent of hiring businesses within a designated community must become Home Base Iowa businesses, each community develops its own incentive package for veterans, the community prominently displays the Home Base Iowa Community designation, and obtains a resolution of support from the appropriate local governing body. Grimes has met the criteria and is offering an incentive package that includes various discounts for veterans as well as economic development guidance and assistance to any veteran seeking to start or locate a business within the community.

The Home Base Iowa is a unique non-profit private-public partnership that focuses on recruiting veterans and active duty service members for quality, well-paying private-sector jobs in Iowa.

  • In March, Iowa was named one of only a handful of states to be designated an All-Vet State by "Hiring Our Heroes," a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
  • In June, Iowa was named as the first state to offer "Hilton Honors Military Initiative." This is a program set up by Hilton Worldwide, and connects military members and their families across the nation with free lodging at Hilton hotels as they pursue their job hunt, or need somewhere to stay as they move for their careers.
  • In July, Iowa was named the third "Get Skills to Work State" by the Manufacturing Institute and National Association of Manufacturers.

The initiative is currently co-chaired by Congressman Leonard Boswell and Casey's CEO Bob Meyers, both of whom are veterans themselves. For more information on Home Base Iowa, please visit www.HomeBaseIowa.gov.

Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015

Senator Chuck Grassley, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the following statement after the White House nominated Judge Rebecca Ebinger to serve on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.

Grassley recommended Ebinger and Judge Leonard Strand to the White House after an extensive effort by a Judicial Selection Commission that Grassley formed after two judges announced their intention to take senior status.  Strand was nominated by the President on July 21, for the open judgeship in the Northern District of Iowa.  The Commission was comprised of highly qualified members of the Iowa legal community, and led by Cynthia Moser, a former Iowa State Bar Association president. The Commission also included Richard Sapp, Jeffrey Goodman, Harlan D. Hockenberg, and Adam Freed.

These lawyers spent hundreds of hours carefully reviewing applications and interviewing each of the 39 Iowans who submitted applications and sought consideration.  Eleven applicants were then selected to participate in a lengthy second interview.  The Commission's review included not only these interviews, but also a thorough study and examination of the applicants' professional history, credentials, and qualifications.  The Commission then made recommendations to Grassley, who reviewed the candidates and their qualifications before submitting his recommendations to the White House.

Here is Grassley's comment on today's announcement.

"The Southern District of Iowa will benefit greatly from Judge Ebinger's background and expertise, and I have great confidence that she will serve with distinction.  I appreciate the White House working with me to move her nomination forward.  The five commissioners who made the recommendation to me, and spent hundreds of hours to vet dozens of very qualified candidates, deserve a lot of credit."

DAVENPORT, IA - On September 14, 2015, Adrian Romal Lomas (Lomas), 43, of Davenport, Iowa, was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge James E. Gritzner to 240 months in prison on the charge of bank robbery, announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. Lomas was also ordered to serve three years supervised release following the imprisonment, to pay $3,375 in restitution, and to pay $100 to the Crime Victims Fund.

On Friday, June 6, 2014, Adrian Romal Lomas and a 15-year-old boy entered the federally insured Family Credit Union on Jersey Ridge Road in Davenport at about 2:45 p.m. and robbed it. Lomas was a wearing a dark T-shirt, gloves, sunglasses, a baseball-type cap, and a bandana over his face. He had placed an authentic-looking, imitation firearm in his waistband which he showed the teller before demanding all of the money she had. Lomas made contact with the teller as he reached across the teller's counter to withdraw some of the money. Lomas placed the money in a backpack that was carried, at first, by the juvenile and then by Lomas. Lomas and the juvenile fled the bank and ran to an awaiting vehicle driven by a third person. Lomas got away with $4,075.00.

Lomas was arrested on June 11, 2014, at a motel in Moline, Illinois.

Trial of the matter commenced on May 19, 2015 in the United States Courthouse in Davenport, Iowa, and the jury returned a guilty verdict on May 22, 2015.
This matter was investigated by the Davenport Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Grassley, Johnson Seek Answers from Justice Departmenton Immunity, Proffer Policy, Investigations

WASHINGTON - Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson, chairmen of the Judiciary and the Homeland Security and Government Affairs committees, are seeking answers from U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch about whether the Justice Department would deem a proffer session as a waiver of a witness's Fifth Amendment rights and whether the department has an ongoing criminal inquiry related to the witness.

The letter to Lynch comes after the attorneys for Bryan Pagliano, the former State Department employee responsible for servicing the private server of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, indicated that if he were compelled to testify, he would invoke his Fifth Amendment rights.  The attorneys then responded to a subsequent request from Grassley and Johnson for a private discussion, known as a proffer session, so the committees could better understand what Pagliano's testimony would be if he were immunized and compelled to testify.  Pagliano's attorneys replied that, among other things, any proffer session on the part of Pagliano or his attorneys may create a risk that he will later be deemed to have waived his constitutional protections.

Grassley and Johnson said that while the Justice Department generally prefers not to talk about ongoing cases, the information they are asking for is critical to help their committees make an informed decision about whether or not to exercise their statutory authority to seek an immunity order to obtain Pagliano's testimony for congressional oversight purposes.  The senators said that understanding the precise nature of the FBI's inquiry into the use of the non-government server that was used to send or receive classified content by Clinton, the Justice Department's view of Pagliano's role in that inquiry, and the impact of any potential immunity order are important considerations for the committees as well as the department.

The senators added that whether to compel Pagliano's testimony is an important decision that their committees are not taking lightly, and obtaining information from the Justice Department will help to inform that decision-making process.

A copy of the text of the letter to Lynch is here.  The signed copy can be found here.

Grassley in Bipartisan Push Urging Administration to Address Currency Manipulation in Trade Talks

WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa is part of a bipartisan group of senators urging United States Trade Representative Michael Froman and U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew to more aggressively address currency issues in the ongoing Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. In a letter to Froman and Lew, Grassley and his fellow senators requested an update on the Administration's efforts to address currency issues and reiterated concerns regarding foreign countries devaluing their currency.

"As you know, we have long been concerned about currency issues, which directly impact the competitiveness of workers in our states and across the country.  However, recently China devalued its currency by over 4 percent," Grassley and colleagues including Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) wrote.

"We fear these recent currency interventions could lead to a pattern of competitive devaluation within the Asia-Pacific that could hurt U.S. workers and exports for years to come," they continued.

The senators have repeatedly called for TPP negotiations to include strong provisions that address currency manipulation, which hurts U.S. auto exports and workers.

Along with Grassley, Portman and Brown, today's letter was also signed by Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.).

The full text of the letter can be found below and here.

DAVENPORT, IA- On September 14, 2015, Adam Lamar Ammons, age 42, formerly of Davenport, Iowa, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge James E. Gritzner to 88 months in prison, after pleading guilty to the charge of felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. Ammons was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release following the period of imprisonment, and to pay $100 towards the Crime Victims Fund.

On or about August 14, 2014, as part of a narcotics investigation, Davenport Police Department (DPD) officers obtained a search warrant to seize and search a safe from a bedroom at a residence on 15th Street in Davenport, Iowa. A Ruger SR22 handgun and associated handgun magazines were seized out of this safe. A witness knew Ammons had placed this safe at the residence, and knew that only Ammons had a key. Ammons admitted that he knew the Ruger SR22 handgun was in the safe, and that he knowingly possessed this handgun. Ammons has a prior 2012 state felony conviction for possession with intent to deliver marijuana.

This matter was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Davenport Police Department, and this case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Iowa as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative.

Davenport, Iowa (Sept. 12, 2015) – Two longtime Speedway Fire-Rescue (SFR) volunteer firefighters, a husband and wife who have protected and aided hundreds of area racing competitors and Quad City Air Show participants over the years, now need some help themselves.
Scott Bohannan, SFR's president, and his wife Karry, SFR's treasurer, were hospitalized with smoke inhalation and suffered a huge loss when their portion of a duplex they lived in with their son Brent at 3rd and Oak in Davenport burned Sunday night, Sept. 6. The Bohannans, who have now been released from the hospital, were able to get out of the house with just the clothes on their backs.
Now their fellow SFR members and others are organizing some benefits for the Bohannans:
1) SFR members will sell 50-50 tickets and/or accept cash donations to benefit the couple at upcoming stock car races they cover.
2)  SFR and the Lil' Racer Car Club Inc. are jointly holding a benefit from 2-7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Checkers Bar and Grill, 3120 6th St. S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There will be a live auction, silent auction, raffles, 50/50 drawings, a dunk tank and more. A live deejay, Tony Ginther's Code 3 Productions, will provide music. SFR is asking for donations of any kind, whether they be for the Bohannans personally or to be raffled or auctioned off at the benefit. Items could include autographed race car door skins, T-shirts, hats and koozies. You may contact the following individuals to donate:
Karri Coyne -- Davenport area (563) 370-6446
Sarah Slade -- Iowa City area (319) 331-5065
Jessica Jungling/Eric Jungling -- Cedar Rapids area (319) 210-3422/(319) 560-1156
Molly Ginther -- Dubuque area (563) 580-5790
3)  SFR and Mitch Swinton, with Lil' Racer Car Club, are making Yankee Dirt Track Classic hats to sell for $15 each at Farley Speedway during their 38th annual Yankee Dirt Track Classic. All of the proceeds from the hat sales will go to Scott and Karry Bohannan and their family. Hats will be available throughout the Yankee Dirt Track Classic. There are several different styles: farmer style with four panel vents and a plastic adjustable strap, all in navy blue; and baseball style with a cloth adjustable back, in black and red; and the fitted style S/M and L/XL, in black.
4) SFR has arranged for The Family Credit Union to accept monetary donations for the Bohannans by mail at any of the following locations:
1530 W. 53rd St., Davenport, Iowa 52806
1400 Rockingham Road, Davenport, Iowa 52802
2238 Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, Iowa 52807
Please make all checks payable to the Bohannan Family Benefit or the Bohannan Family.
5) SFR is collecting clothing for the Bohannans and their son Brent. Sizes for Scott: men's XL or XXL shirts, 38x34 jeans and 2XL jogging pants; For Karry: women's medium or large shirts and size 7 pants; For Brent: men's large shirts and 32 pants (longs). Call Karri Coyne for more information: (563) 370-6446.
SFR is a non-profit 501C3 organization based in Davenport. Roughly 50 volunteers, who are trained in firefighting, vehicle extrication and emergency medical service, serve at a drag strip and more than half a dozen auto race tracks in eastern Iowa and western Illinois each year from April through October. They also work at the annual Quad City Air Show each year in Davenport.
