Des Moines, September 8, 2015– The Iowa Supreme Court today announced its 2015-2016 adjudicative term calendar, including two special evening sessions in Des Moines and four special sessions to hear oral arguments in communities around the state. The court's adjudicative term is from September 1, 2015, to June 30, 2016.

The court will hear special evening sessions of oral arguments in Newton, Harlan, Ames, and Clinton. The evening sessions are scheduled for the convenience of members of the public who wish to attend. Drake University School of Law and the University of Iowa College of Law will also host oral arguments with limited seating for the public. There will be two special evening session in Des Moines, one in the West Des Moines Valley High School Performing Arts Center, November 16, 2015, and the second in the Judicial Branch Building, February 16, 2016. The special sessions are for central Iowa residents who may not have been able to attend the court's regular morning and afternoon sessions.

"The court looks forward to hearing oral arguments at Valley High School this fall," Chief Justice Mark Cady said. "In the past three years, the Iowa Supreme Court has visited 17 communities for evening oral arguments and public receptions. Going forward, we plan to add a central Iowa school to our schedule every fall. It will be one more opportunity for Iowans to learn more about the value of its court system and for the supreme court to learn what members of the community expect from their court system as we continue to build for the future."

The 2015-2016 adjudicative term will also mark the second year the supreme court has live streamed and archived its oral arguments on the Iowa Courts YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCL6EU7W8kqDKnKPUzMdxr_g

SPRINGFIELD - Governor Bruce Rauner today granted seven and denied 163 clemency petitions. Nearly 1,500 petitions remain from the previous administrations.

The 170 clemency petitions Governor Rauner acted upon today are part of dockets dating back to April 2009. Each person granted clemency has recently undergone a criminal background check through the Illinois State Police's Law Enforcement Agencies Data System.

A granted clemency request for a pardon with expungement allows the petitioner to seek expungement of their conviction through the court system.

These are the fourth set of petitions the governor has reviewed since taking office. The Governor's Office has developed a process to review clemency petitions on a regular basis.

For additional information on the granted clemency cases, please contact Ken Tupy at the Prisoner Review Board at (217) 782-1610 or Ken.Tupy@illinois.gov.

Iowa City, IA - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached between the P5+1 nations and Iran.

"From the beginning, I have made it clear that I believe it is unacceptable for Iran to be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. And it is as important as ever that we work towards that commonly held goal. Since it was announced, I have evaluated the agreement and consulted with constituents, administration officials, and experts in the field to learn more about what implementation of this deal will look like.

"The end goal of any agreement must be to prevent a nuclear weapons capable Iran and ensure the safety of the American people. My decision regarding this multinational agreement is based on whether what is before us is the best way to achieve that goal. It has become increasingly clear in the weeks since the agreement was presented to Congress and the American people that the opponents of the agreement have yet to offer a credible and effective alternative. Without any meaningful alternative, I have decided that I will support the deal and vote in favor of it moving forward. Combined with other options that remain on the table if Iran does not comply with the agreement, this framework, which is far from perfect, is a beginning and presents the best path forward to ensuring Iran does not develop nuclear weapons."

WASHINGTON - Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley is requesting an update on the ongoing investigation into the drowning death of a 20-year-old Iowan while in police custody more than a year ago.

Brandon Ellingson of Clive, Iowa, drowned on the Lake of the Ozarks while in the custody of the Missouri Highway Patrol on May 31, 2014.  To date, the criminal investigation into his death remains unresolved. While Grassley asked the U.S. Department of Justice to review the matter for violations of federal civil or criminal laws, few developments have emerged from the local investigation since a new special prosecutor was appointed in March.

"Whenever an individual's death is alleged to have been caused by law enforcement officers, the matter deserves a prompt, thorough, fair, and independent investigation," Grassley said in a letter today to Salem, Mo., City Attorney William Seay, the special prosecutor for the investigation.

In the letter, which was also sent to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Grassley is asking for the investigation's current status and expected timeline, as well as what efforts are being made to ensure transparency in the process.

On Saturday, September 12, the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) is hosting its inaugural Family Day event for young burn survivors and their immediate families at Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, Illinois. Family Day is provided at no cost to Illinois families with children between the ages of infancy and 12 years old who have been adversely affected by a burn injury. It offers parents and children the opportunity to network by sharing stories, suggestions, and ideas amongst one another and to enjoy various activities in a fun atmosphere.
The program will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and includes educational presentations, lunch, and games. Burn unit nurses from University of Chicago Medical Center and Loyola University Medical Center will present on the coping process with a burn injury, while fire service personnel will discuss fire safety and prevention.

Join River Bend Foodbank and Feeding America in their fight against hunger by participating in Hunger Action Month! Hunger Action Month is nationwide and runs the entire month of September. The movement was developed to encourage the public to take action by joining the movement to help end hunger.

Did you know that one in eight people, including 50,000 children, in the 22 counties that the River Bend Foodbank serves, struggle with hunger? The issue affects everyone - our child's classmate, an office coworker, or a neighbor down the street.

Here's how you can help the 49 million Americans who may not know where they will find their next meal:

  • Volunteer- sign up on the River Bend Foodbank volunteer list (Click Here) and be notified of all of the great opportunities available during the month of September. You can sort food in the warehouse or distribute food at a mobile food pantry
  • Donate food to River Bend Foodbank or your local food pantry. Click Here to find your local food pantry
  • Make a monetary contribution to River Bend Foodbank (Click Here)
  • Text Hunger to 24700 to donate now
  • Wear orange to Support Hunger Action Day on September 3rd

Established in 1982, River Bend Foodbank is the largest hunger relief organization in the Quad Cities and surrounding communities. Annually, 7.3 million meals are distributed to more than 300 charitable feeding programs throughout 22 counties in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. River Bend Foodbank assists in childhood hunger programs including the Backpack Program and Kids Café. The Backpack Program provides 2100 Quad City children with nourishing food to take home on the weekends during the school year. Kids Café provides evening meals to children in three locations. Other assistance is offered at the Mobile Food Pantries which directly feed thousands of families each month and the school pantries, serving needy children and their families.
