DES MOINES, IOWA (April 9, 2025) — Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a proclamation setting Tuesday, April 29, 2025, as the date for a special election in Iowa House District 78 following the resignation of Iowa State Representative Sami Scheetz on April 1, 2025.

Iowa Code section 69.14 outlines the authority given to the governor to set a special election.

The proclamation setting the date of the special election can be found online and reads as follows:

DES MOINES, IOWA (April 3, 2025) — Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird warns Iowans who have used 23andMe, a genetic testing company that tracks ancestry, to protect their data as the company faces bankruptcy.

The company announced that it will sell “substantially all of its assets,” which may include its collection of genetic data.

That means 23andMe could sell or transfer Iowans’ genetic information to a third-party without their consent.

DES MOINES, IOWA (April 2, 2025) — After a transgender parent was denied access to a high-school bathroom that didn’t align with the parent’s biological sex, the parent sued. On Monday, Attorney General Brenna Bird filed to intervene in the lawsuit to uphold Iowa’s law that requires people to use bathrooms based on their sex assigned at birth. The parent today dropped the lawsuit against the school and school district.
