Although the World's Toughest Rodeo is known as one of the nations' most exciting professional rodeo live events, it is also respected for another special attribute; each show opens with God and Old Glory. 2013 brings a tribute to our heroes, including local firemen, policemen, and EMTs, as well as the military, both veterans and active duty soldiers. But through a unique Facebook promotion, fans of World's Toughest Rodeo were able to nominate a Hometown Hero and a unique individual was selected that is a hero in many hometowns across the nation.

Larry Eckhardt from the Quad Cities area, known as "The Flagman," has taken it upon himself to honor soldiers that have paid the
ultimate sacrifice in a very heartwarming fashion. Though Eckhardt never served in the military, he assumed his patriotic duty after attending a funeral six years ago in Galesburg, IL. "We had a local soldier go down and the citizen turnout was great, but I didn't think there were near enough flags," the former International Harvester employee says. Eckhardt purchased 150 flags and began hauling them in the back of his pickup truck to military funerals across Illinois, soliciting help from American Legion and
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts to stake the Stars and Stripes. He now has over 2500 flags and awaits the call and travels to the hometown of soldiers all across the nation.

He arrives the night before and solicits local volunteers to line the funeral route with the flags he has purchased through donations as well as personal investment. provided these communities the ability to support the families in a very meaningful way
and this outpouring of group support helps the families begin to heal. Taking little credit for this, Larry is a true hero in every sense of the word. World's Toughest Rodeo will provide the first 1,500 fans each night with a flag as we raise them in praise of a man that has raised the spirits of so many through his personal initiative.

The 2013 edition of the World's Toughest Rodeo will feature top professional rodeo competitors in Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding and Women's Barrel Racing, comedy of John Harrison, Professional Rodeo's 2012 Comedy Act of the year,
award winning bucking horses and bulls of Three Hills Rodeo as well as the greatest show on dirt...But the finale event is BACKWARDS Bull Riding, as Brandon Lindsey, World's Toughest Rodeo Bull Fighter attempts to wrap his legs around the bull, Crazy Train's horns, lay face down and ride for 8 seconds. You won't see it anywhere else.

It's an action packed, star studded show.  Tickets start at just $18 and kids tickets half price every day at www.ticketmaster.com or iWireless Box Office.

International Winter Lunch

True authenticity is what was experienced at the International Winter Lunch at Credit Island Lodge on January 4, 2013. Ethnic meals were prepared, on site, by international students attending Black Hawk College, Saint Ambrose University and Scott Community College. The diversity in food and participants were so global, no one had to get on a plane for an international joyride.

Students, Davenport Parks and Recreation staff and the student advisors enjoyed meeting new people and learning to cook delicacies from around the world. The international students, particularly, met friends they could all relate to. Despite the differences in where these students came from, they all shared the same story -they traveled away from home for a better education. Struggle to adjust their life in an American culture is a unique story for each. Some were shared.

Dishes representing twelve countries were prepared on site and shared with attendees from fifteen countries.. Davenport Parks and Recreation has been encouraged to make such rare opportunities open to public in the future. Cooking is both an enjoyable recreational activity and a learning opportunity for all, and we are privileged to have many academic institutions in Davenport according us to taste the variety fare through their international students.

BCS TROOPERBOWL
Pick a team and help the troops

This year's BCS championship game is college football's mother lode, a Notre Dame-Alabama showdown for the national title, arguably one of the greatest Championship-game matchups the BSC has ever delivered. And you can take part and help in MAF's first ever BCS "Trooperbowl". Now the BCS title will either go to the Fighting Irish or the Crimson Tide on Monday Jan, 7th but you can decide which team is the Trooper Bowl winner by donating today.

All you have to do is donate on behalf of either Notre Dame's Fighting Irish or Alabama's Crimson Tide. Whichever team has more donations by game time on Monday Jan 7th will win the "Trooperbowl" and in addition to the care packages sent from both teams donations, a special shipment of Care Packages will be sent to a Unit in Afghanistan from the winning team's home state.

If you like College football or if you just like to help the troops, the first annual BCS Trooper bowl is for you. Your donation could turn the tide in deciding which unit in Afghanistan with gets the special BCS Trooperbowl Care Package. Either way you can make a huge impact in a soldiers life by sending him the comfort of home and a personalize message letting them know they have your support!!

The winning team will be decided by which ever has more donations by game time Monday the 7th.  A lucky Unit from either Indiana (fighting Irish) or Alabama(Crimson Tide) will receive a special shipment of Care Packages with a BCS theme and be crowned the BCS Trooperbowl Champions.

We  are interviewing for certified and paid soccer coaches to  spearhead the inaugural Davenport Arrows Soccer Academy. The Soccer  Academy will be run by Davenport Parks and Recreation from March through  November with four eight-week sessions at either of our indoor and outdoor  facilities.

drive to see soccer played at a very high level from your efforts,  we need your expertise!

Please  call Seve Ghose, Director of Parks and Recreation at 563-326-7817 or email sghose@ci.davenport.ia.us to learn more about the Davenport Arrows Soccer  Academy.
