Outfielder notches career-highs with four hits and three runs scored as Quad Cities moves into tie with Burlington for Wild Card

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (June 10, 2014) - Jandel Gustave and Michael Feliz each worked four innings, striking out a combined nine hitters, and Brett Phillips recorded career-highs with four hits and three runs scored in Quad Cities' 6-2 victory Tuesday over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The win pushed the River Bandits into a tie with Burlington for the Western Division Wild Card with five games to play in the first half of the season.

River Bandits pitchers did not walk a batter, while their offense lumped enough hits together to score in four different innings, despite being sent down in order in four other frames. Quad Cities starter Jandel Gustave worked the first four innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts. Michael Feliz (2-1) earned the win in relief, firing four frames with four punchouts while scattering two hits. Chris Cotton worked a perfect ninth for Quad Cities.

Quad Cities struck first, with Phillips leading off the game with a base hit. Chan-Jong Moon then hit a slow groundball to the right side of the mound that Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Aaron Slegers fielded and threw away, allowing Phillips to score from first and Moon to reach third. After Brian Holberton flew out to center field, Chase McDonald, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, singled home Moon to make it 2-0 River Bandits.

With Quad Cities leading 2-1, Tyler White and Jon Kemmer each singled to put runners on first and second with two outs in the fourth. Brett Booth then hit a line drive to center that Jason Kanzler misjudged, overrunning the ball and having it roll all the way to the wall. Both White and Kemmer scored and Booth ended up at third with his first triple of the year to increase the River Bandits lead to 4-1.

After Cedar Rapids scored to make it 4-2 Bandits, Brett Phillips lined a triple of his own into right-center field to lead off the fifth, his 10^th three-bagger of the year. Slegers got Moon to ground out to first, but walked Holberton to put runners on the corners. McDonald then laced a single to right to plate Phillips and give the Bandits a 5-2 lead.

Phillips again helped create a run in the seventh. He singled to right and then moved to second on Moon's infield single. On a pitch to Holberton, the River Bandits tried a double steal. Cedar Rapids catcher Michael Quesada fired the ball into left field, allowing Phillips to score from third and put Quad Cities ahead 6-2.

Slegers (5-3) took the loss, surrendering five runs, three earned, on seven hits. He walked one and struck out three. The defeat sent Cedar Rapids to 28-37, while the River Bandits improved to 34-30. Quad Cities will send Evan Grills (2-1, 3.23 ERA) to the mound against Cedar Rapids' Fernando Romero (0-0, 3.60).

DES MOINES, IA (06/09/2014)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Fabric and Threads Department is seeking fabric donations and volunteers for the fifth annual State Fair Sew-In. The free program offers Fairgoers a chance to try their hand at simple sewing and quilting while providing warm blankets to local children in need. "Nothing Compares" to the Iowa State Fair, set August 7-17.

Donations of five-inch wide strips (cut with the fabric) and two-yard cuts of fabric in all-cotton juvenile prints and patterns are needed for quilt fronts and backings. In addition, cash donations are needed to help cover the costs of quilt batting and materials. All donations can be dropped off at the Competitive Events Department in the Administration Building on the Fairgrounds or mailed to the Iowa State Fair Competitive Events Department: P.O. Box 57130, Des Moines, IA 50317-0003. All donations should be labeled for the Sew-In Project.

The Fair is also searching for sewing assistants to help Fairgoers make the simple strip quilts. Volunteers are asked to commit to four-hour shifts from Noon to 4 p.m. or 1 to 5 p.m. A site supervisor will be on-hand to supply materials and help with machines. All sewing assistants will receive one parking pass and an admission ticket to the Fair.

Volunteers at last year's State Fair Sew-In completed 305 quilts as a part of the Des Moines Area Quilt Guild Education Committee. This year's quilts will be donated to the children at the Angel Tree Camps, Bidwell Riverside Center and families of deployed troops. Since the Sew-In began in 2009, volunteers have created 1,294 quilts for children at the University of Iowa, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Blank Pediatric Oncology Clinic, Youth Emergency Shelter, Beloit Children's Services and Lutheran Social Services of Iowa.

The Sew-In will be open daily during the Fair from Noon to 5 p.m. in the south hallway of the William C. Knapp Varied Industries Building. Fairgoers are invited to stop in and try their hand at quilting basics (no experience necessary). Each participant will receive a commemorative pin for their efforts.

Quad Cities offense struggles for second consecutive game

BURLINGTON, Iowa (June 5, 2014) - The Quad Cities River Bandits' offense mustered just five hits in a 2-1 defeat to the Burlington Bees Thursday at Community Field.

The Bees took the lead when Kody Eaves led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run off of Quad Cities starter Michael Feliz.

Throughout the rest of his four-inning outing, Feliz battled control issues but was successfully able to strand eight Burlington baserunners, with the Bees leaving the bases loaded in both the second and fourth innings. Feliz scattered three hits and four walks with six strikeouts in his four frames.

The River Bandits were able to tie the game in the sixth. Tanner Mathis led off with an infield single. With Mathis running from first, Chan-Jong Moon punched a single to left., bringing Mathis around to third. Burlington outfielder Mike Fish bobbled the ball, which allowed Moon to reach second. After Brett Phillips struck out, Brian Holberton's groundout to second scored Mathis from third and tied the game at one.

With the score still knotted in the bottom of the eighth, Angel Rosa reached second on an error by Quad Cities third baseman Austin Elkins. Rosa moved to third on Exicardo Cayones' sacrifice bunt and then scored the game's decisive run on a wild pitch by Quad Cities reliever Tyler Brunnemann. Brunnemann (0-2) worked two innings out of the bullpen, giving up the lone unearned run with a walk and strikeout to suffer the loss.

Burlington's Trevor Foss (2-4) worked two shutout frames with two strikeouts and a hit allowed to pick up the win and Alan Busenitz tossed a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

The loss dropped the Bandits to 30-29, with Burlington's 30-28 record bettering Quad Cities in the standings with 10 games to go in the first half of the season. The River Bandits will try to salvage the three-game set tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. CT.
