Amendment cosponsored by Loebsack to support bus transit systems included

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the House passed a six year, bipartisan Highway Reauthorization bill. Loebsack helped lead the fight to include a bipartisan provision that will make additional funding available for a competitive grant program supporting bus transit services in Iowa and nationwide. The legislation now heads to a Conference Committee where the differences between the House bill and the legislation that passed the Senate earlier this year will be worked out.

"I am pleased that Democrats and Republicans could come together and pass a bipartisan, long term transportation bill. This bill will help create jobs in Iowa and give communities the certainty needed to invest in necessary infrastructure improvements.

"It is clear to any Iowan who drives a car or truck, rides the rails or flies in an airplane that a long-term highway plan is badly needed. A modern, safe and efficient transportation authorization will not only create jobs now for the construction industry, but it will also set the stage for long term job creation and economic growth. While the work on this legislation is not yet finished, this is a step in the right direction by investing in infrastructure so our businesses and farmers can compete effectively in the 21st Century global economy."

AMANA, Iowa- The Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa presented 27 awards recognizing excellence in the tourism industry on October 22nd in Fairfield during the 2015 Iowa Tourism Conference.

"The Iowa Tourism Awards are the highest honor given in our state's tourism industry," said Carla Eysink, president of the Travel Federation of Iowa. "The winners are truly the best of the best."

Awards to both metro and rural areas were made in 13 award categories.

The Amana Colonies won for Outstanding Community and again for Outstanding New Event with Wurst Festival which was held this past June.

The Amana Colonies ranks as one of the state's premier attractions and plays host to 800,000 to 1 million visitors each year.  The combination of a unique culture and history along with events, culinary traditions, and unique shops and handcrafted items are some of the reasons Amana Colonies annually ranks at the top of the Iowa tourism scene.

The Wurst Festival attracted 1,500 people in its first year.  The event centered on sausages and local sausage makers along with Wurst University which offered the "Wurst education in Iowa". The date for next year's Wurst Festival is June 18, 2016.

Quad Cities: Just in time for the holidays, the Quad Cities Lodging Association (QCLA) teams up to bring you great deals on hotel rooms and packages featuring Quad Cities area restaurants and attractions through a joint promotion with the Quad-City Times aptly named Hotel Extravaganza.  From October 26-November 1, you can get 50% off on select rooms and packages in the Quad Cities by purchasing them at www.qctimes.com/hoteldeals.  (Webpage will go live Monday morning.)

All you have to do to take advantage of these great deals is visit the website!  Once there, view the hotel properties to find out what each is offering, and purchase it online for 50% off the regular package price.  Once you make a purchase, you can print out the certificate.  Each certificate has a unique code, and each certificate is good for 12 months.  Almost 20 hotels/motels are participating in the Hotel Extravaganza.

The Hotel Extravaganza is fundraiser is designed to benefit the Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau (QCCVB).  Proceeds will go toward the "Invest in Your Hometown" campaign, a program developed by the QCLA, which has hotels pooling their money into a bid fund for future tourism business in the Quad Cities.   Future tourism business includes meetings, conventions, sports tournaments and events that require bid funds in order to secure the business.  The QCCVB uses the funds as leverage to compete with other markets that are vying for the same business.  Last year, meetings/conventions and sports events generated a $22 million impact for the Quad Cities area.

This is the fourth time the Hotel Extravaganza has been offered to the public.  The last fundraiser was held last spring.  During that promotion, over $9,000 was raised for the "Invest in Your Hometown" campaign.  In turn, this money helped secure such events and tournaments as the American Softball Association, North American Fastpitch Association, USA BMX Nationals, North American Strongman, Missouri Valley Conference Women's Basketball Championships, and NAIA Men's Golf Championship.

"We put together the Hotel Extravaganza Promotion to help raise funds for the QCLA Bid Fund.  This fund is used to assist the QCCVB in bringing events to the Quad Cities, helping to grow the local economy, and to showcase the area for long term growth and development", said Carole Coykendall, QCLA President.  "We are pleased that hotels in the area are behind this cause and support the efforts of this fundraiser and QCLA.  We are excited that this fundraiser has been a hit with the community; offering local hotels at a discounted price and raising money for a good cause go hand in hand.  We are happy to announce that we have added some restaurant gift certificates to some of the packages this year.  We want to continue to grow our Invest in Your Hometown campaign."

Each year, the QCCVB team is out selling the Quad Cities to meeting, convention and sports planners across the Midwest.  The sales team follows leads, makes cold calls, attends trade shows, appointment-based shows, and researches possible business through contacts and the Internet.

"The Invest in Your Hometown Campaign and the Hotel Extravaganza initiated by the Quad Cities Lodging Association is an invaluable resource for the QCCVB and its efforts to bring meetings, conventions, and sports events to the Quad Cities.  The competition is high for these events as we compete against other cities to secure them for our region.  Good proposals and a bid fund can make or break the deal," says Joe Taylor, QCCVB President/CEO.  "These funds help us bring such events such as International Softball Congress Men's Fastpitch Tournament, NAIA Men's Golf Championships, FLW Bass and Walleye Tournaments, BMX National Tournaments, and ASA Girls' Softball Tournaments to the Quad Cities.  In turn, these events have a huge economic impact on all facets of our economy because they pump new money into our area's economy."

The QCCVB is the destination marketing and management organization for the Quad Cities region.  The staff at the QCCVB works to bring meetings, conventions, sports tournaments, group tours, and leisure travelers to the Quad Cities through targeted sales and marketing efforts.  Over the last year, leisure visitors spent over $800 million in the Quad Cities and generated over $12 million in local tax receipts. www.visitquadcities.com
October 15, 2015 - The Iowa Tourism Office has released new data showing continued growth in the state's tourism industry.  In 2014, travel-generated expenditures in Scott County totaled almost $622 million, an increase of 3.89% over 2013.

Over the past five years, travel-generated expenditures for the entire state of Iowa have increased by an average of 5.94 percent, beating the five year national average of 5.78 percent. According to the study, "The Economic Impact of Travel on Iowa Counties," travelers spent $8.06 billion in Iowa and generated $374 million in state tax revenues in 2014, both all-time highs.

The report also revealed that more than 66,500 Iowans owe their employment to the tourism industry, a 1.6 percent increase from 2013. Without jobs generated by domestic travel, Iowa's 2014 unemployment rate of 4.4 percent would have been 8.3 percent. The tourism industry employs 6,100 people in Scott County.

Based on preliminary numbers we're seeing for this year, we have every reason to believe our growth will continue," said Shawna Lode, manager of the Iowa Economic Development Authority's Iowa Tourism Office. "In 2015 we expect about 1.5 million people to visit our website, traveliowa.com, an increase of approximately 40 percent from 2014."

The entire report is available online in .pdf format and includes state- and county-specific data. Link to the news release from the State of Iowa

In Scott County, travel-generated expenditures in 2014 totaled $621.67, employed 6,100 people and generated $9.34 million in state taxes. Tourism in Iowa generates $8.06 billion in expenditures, employs 66,500 people statewide and generates $374 million in state taxes.

The Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau (QCCVB) is the official tourism destination marketing and management organization for the Quad Cities region.  The organization serves the tourism interests of Scott County in Iowa and Rock Island, Mercer, Warren and Henderson Counties in Illinois. The QCCVB increases visitor expenditures and overnight stays through strategic sales, marketing, and services.  The Quad Cities averages over 1 million visitors a year that generate an $800 million economic impact on the local economy.

WHAT:    Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Driving School

WHERE: Bettendorf High School, 3333 18th St, Bettendorf, IA 52722
WHEN:   Sunday, October 25th; 7:30 am - 4:30 pm

DETAILS

Car crashes are the leading killer of American teens from ages 15 - 20, with more than 5,000 teens involved in a fatal crash each year and an additional 196,000 injured.

Simple driving errors, avoidable but common among inexperienced teens, cause the majority of fatal accidents.

  • Tire Rack Street Survival® is a 501c3 organization and is the largest active non-profit national driver education program that teaches teens the skills they need to stay alive behind the wheel. Unlike traditional driver's education programs based on classroom theory and simple maneuvers, the Tire Rack Street Survival® program improves driver competence through hands-on experiences in real-world driving situations.
  • Students will receive a short classroom session and then will learn, hands-on, how to manage everyday driving hazards, obstacles and challenges in a controlled environment on an advanced driving course to ultimately 'arrive alive.'
  • Students learn emergency braking and skid control, how to control proper braking, and how to avoid accidents entirely. In select schools, in addition to spending time in the driver's seat of parked 18-wheeler to fully comprehend its massive blind spots, teenagers witness the violent detonation of an air bag, which reinforces proper hand placement on the steering wheel.
  • Students are taught in their own cars, not specially prepared program vehicles, so the skills they learn can be directly translated to their daily driving experiences. Tire Rack Street Survival® challenges teenagers to understand how to control a vehicle, rather than just operate one.

Tire Rack Street Survival® is open to licensed and permitted drivers ages 15 - 21. Forms, schedules and more information can be found online at www.streetsurvival.org. The cost is $75 per student and some insurance companies offer premium discounts to graduates.

The program is in its 13th year having trained 14,800 new drivers. 101 schools were completed last year and the goal for 2015 is over 125 nationally.

For the 6th year, Michelin North America is supporting the Street Survival program by providing funding for pavement rental for each school throughout the United States. That is no small task, given that this year the Tire Rack Street Survival schools plan to offer its training to teens all across the U.S.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Legislation sponsored by state Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, to promote local tourism and create jobs by helping local convention centers compete for conferences and trade shows is now law.
"Increased tourism means more dollars spent in our communities at the businesses that put middle-class families to work," Smiddy said. "Neighboring states are working to be attractive to conventions and shows that can be so helpful to the local economy, and it's important that our community be competitive."
Smiddy sponsored Senate Bill 508 in the House. The bill creates a special grant for public convention centers, like the iWireless Center in Moline, to help them attract more meetings, trade shows and conventions to the state and region. The bill reimburses convention centers for incentives, such as reduced room rates for attendees, they offer to organization considering hosting a convention in the region, with restrictions.
"I'm always looking for ways to make our communities competitive and help local business, and this legislation will help our region grow as a convention destination - funneling the capital that accompanies these shows into the regional economy," Smiddy said. "This new law serves as a reminder we can work together to help local economies and maintain Illinois' reputation as an excellent destination."
The new law received bipartisan support on its way through the General Assembly and was signed into law on August 27, 2015.
