"This year's Holiday Stroll is going to be bigger, better and brighter than ever," said Karla Pinner, publisher of the Muscatine Journal. "We're really excited about the lighted parade, which is new this year. Local kids will be carrying special lanterns; it should be a lot of fun.  You're also going to see more lighted decorations downtown. "

There will be free refreshments up and down Second Street in various shops and there will be an opportunity to extend the holiday spirit further by dropping toys off for the Salvation Army at Carriage House Carpet One Floor and Home, 121 E. Second St.

In addition to being able to enjoy music, people will be able to appreciate other kinds of art with an artist meet and greet at We Can Frame That, 221 E. Second St., and with artist Carol Steinmetz at Pearl City Iowa Realty, 222 W. Second St.

Not only will Second Street be abuzz with family friendly activities as is tradition, but festivities will extend all the way up to Third Street via Cedar Street. Local band Lefty and the Spinners, which typically only performs once a year, will be playing at the Muscatine Journal building at 301 Third Street and Vineyard Church, at 224 E 3rd St., will host an array of live music as well.

There will be plenty of photo opportunities at the Stroll, so don't forget to bring your camera and to share them using the hashtag #MuscaStroll. The Pearl City Players will be dressed in costumes for photo ops and Santa will be at several locations after his appearance in the parade at 6 p.m., including Sarah Siler Photography and the Jubilee Community Center.

The parade will also include dogs from the Humane Society and anybody else who'd like to participate can sign up to do so by calling Pinner at 563-262-0552.

Also, the Muscatine Parks and Recreation department is holding its annual Candy Cane Hunt down at the riverfront at 7 p.m. for preschool through fourth graders.  There will be lots of candy canes to be found by all participants as well as several "special" candy canes that can be redeemed at Pearl City Station for a special toy.  Cookies and drinks will be available at Pearl City Station after the hunt.  The Candy Cane Hunt will be held in the dark, so bring a flashlight if you can!  LED flashlights will be available if you're unable to bring your own.

DAVENPORT, Iowa, November 23, 2015 - The public is invited to a World Aids Day Service at Metropolitan Community Church of the Quad Cities, located at 2930 W. Locust Street. Since 1988, December 1st has been designated as World Aids Day with the goal of bringing together people from around the world to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and to demonstrate international solidarity in the face of the pandemic. MCC QC will honor the theme of World AIDS Day, Getting to Zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths during the gathering on December 2nd by requesting a love offering for The Project of the Quad Cities. One hundred percent of the offering will be donated to support the programs and services offered at The Project.

KWQC-TV6, The Station That Serves Illinois and Iowa Every Day, will host its annual Toys For Tots "Drive Up and Drop Off" on Thursday, December 3rd from 6AM - 6:30PM.

KWQC-TV6 is pleased to once again partner with the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve in collecting toys for less fortunate children in the community who may otherwise go without gifts this Christmas.

U.S. Marines, TV6 staff, and volunteers will be on hand outside of the KWQC Broadcast Center located at 805 Brady St., Davenport, IA to receive donations.  Anyone who would like to donate can simply drive up and hand off their donation without leaving their vehicle.

The U.S Marine Corp Reserves is asking for new, unwrapped toys preferably around the $10 or above price range. There is a particular need for gifts appropriate for boys and girls ages 6 months - 2 years and 10-12 years. Monetary donations are accepted and will be sent to the Toys For Tots foundation in Quantico, Virginia for accounting purposes where they will then be deposited to a local account designated for use in the Q.C.A.

The following items cannot be accepted by the program and will not be distributed: stuffed animals, realistic looking guns or weapons, food, or clothing.

Traffic flow through the TV6 driveway will be reversed this year due to Brady St. still being two-lane traffic at the time of the event. Drivers will need to enter from Perry St. and exit turning north on to Brady St.

More information on the U.S. Marine Corp Reserve "Toys For Tots" program can be found at http://quad-cities.toysfortots.org.

ABOUT THE INDEPENDENT SCHOLARS' EVENINGS:

To all Independent Scholars:  let us know if you will like to present / discuss your work during an upcoming Independent Scholars' Evening.  Held every Thursday evening at 7.00 pm during a shortened academic year, these evenings are focused on the topic of presentation, and are intellectually stimulating, free, and open to the public.

Independent Scholars give a presentation-discussion to an audience of interested co-learners during these Evenings  which are dedicated to the scholars giving the presentation.  Audiences actively participate bringing their ideas and critique to the scholars' work.

As co-learners, your presence is vital. Your presence supports the work of the Independent Scholars as their original work is being finalized for publication or further ongoing presentation.

Dedicated to the promotion of the ongoing work of Independent Scholars, these Evenings are not commercial evenings, although many Independent Scholars have privately benefited commercially from their presentations at these Independent Scholars' Evenings.

Additionally,  in today's economy, often citizens cannot, or do not wish to,  get monetary employment  in their area of interest and training; or their interests have changed and continue to change as they grow, as is often the case. These ISE or Independent Scholars Evenings are the venue or vehicle for this parallel work in today's modern era.

Keeping these considerations in mind, The Institute promotes the work of Independent Scholars. The Institute does this by providing a free -standing structured organization to Independent Scholars who give their presentations at these dedicated weekly Independent Scholars' Evenings.

Not governed by any State Educational Board requirements, or potential existing bias of departmental heads or peers, yet within the perimeters of Federal and State laws, these free-standing Independent Scholars' Evenings sessions are dedicated to those who wish to use these evenings for their ongoing personal life's work.  Please visit our website: www.qcinstitute.org to review archives.

These evenings are characterized by a vigorous, stimulating and uplifting intellectual atmosphere. All the presentations and opinions are authentic and original.

Independent Scholars' Evenings are sponsored by The Institute for Cultural & Healing Traditions, a 501(c)3 organization according to the United States law at State and Federal levels since 1996.

The Institute is free-standing. Although we have a Board of Directors, we do not control the content of presentations. Social perimeters and market forces decide and are factored into governing the success of Independent Scholars personal work.

The Independent Scholars' Evenings are purely a Community  organization for intellectual inquiry, expression  and the Freedom of Speech.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND

The Moline Public Library's "The Grrreat Tiger Tales Reading Challenge" sponsored by Ascentra Credit Union was held Saturday, Nov. 14 at the library. Moline first graders were rewarded for reading 10 books in one month.  Students reaching their goals enjoyed a pizza party at the library.  Each student was recognized by name, awarded a certificate of achievement and given a stuffed tiger provided by Ascentra Credit Union.  Each class then poses for a picture alongside Ascentra mascot Jumpin' George.  "It's a great feeling seeing over 300 first graders excited about reading," says Alvaro Macias, Ascentra Credit Union Community Development Manager.  "When they are recognized by name in front of their family and a large audience, the students are seeing the importance and rewards of reading." The Moline-Coal Valley School District, Moline Public Library and Ascentra Credit Union have worked together to promote the love of reading to Moline's first graders since 2009.
