Summer Reading Kickoff Carnival - All Ages!

Saturday, June 7, Noon to 3:00 pm,

Rock Island Main Library parking lot, 401 19th Street.

Come to our carnival to register for summer reading and pick up your summer reading registration prize, while supplies last. The carnival includes events for the whole family -- adults, children and teens! The fun includes a bounce house, animal events, costumed pet parade, K-9 police dog demo, special games, mascot visits, face-painting, and magic.

The carnival schedule includes:

  • Noon - registration, games & snacks

  • 1:00 pm - Costumed pet parade - enter now!

  • 2:00 pm - K-9 police dog demo by the Rock Island Police Department

Free hot dogs and pop will be available, and you can also purchase Kona Ice for dessert.

Register your pet now for our costumed pet parade by May 31. If your pet has paws and can walk on a leash or be carried in a secure carrier, it qualifies! Prizes for best reading theme, best pet/person match, most original entry.

Join us as reality television contestant Serengeti Steve brings his reptile experience show of snakes, aliigators, lizards and more creepy-crawlies for a fun program with plenty of audience participation. Steve shows, tells and thrills audiences of all ages with just a small portion of his collection of more than 200 species of reptiles and arachnids. One performance only.

 

Friday, June 20, Living Lands and Waters, 2:30 to 3:30 pm, Main Library. Mike Coyne-Logan, of Living Lands and Waters, will talk about the history and mission of the group, the importance of rivers, recycling, and how one person can make a difference.  For ages 13 and older.

 

Thursday, June 26, See a Juggler! Be a Juggler! High energy pro-juggler Jason Kollum presents a funny, interactive, total participation program where the audience becomes the juggler.  First the Rock n' Roll variety show, then the fun continues with a hands-on skills workshop. Everyone learns cool balancing and juggling skills. Perfect for all ages & families. 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Main Library. Repeats at 1:00 pm at Southwest Branch.

4th annual BBQ and Craft Brew

June 21st and 22nd 2014 BBQ and Craft Brew will take over LeClaire Park in Davenport, IA.

On the 21st from 12-5 there will be a craft brew tasting including local wine and specialty cheese and sausages.

At 4 the park will come alive with music provided by Rascals Live from Moline, IL.

BBQ Teams have been checked in and will start prepping to cook the BBQ. The 4th Annual Kansas City Barbeque Society will be underway with 30+ World Class Teams as seen on Pit Masters competing for cash, trophies, points and bragging rights.

On the 21st there is an Amateur BBQ Competition. Registration and meat inspection begin at 8 A.M. followed by a cooks meeting at 10 A.M. From 4:25-4:35 P.M. teams will turn in their ribs. Trophies will be awarded at 5 P.M.

On the 22nd at 11 A.M. registration for the Brew Cruise Bike Ride opens. The ride will start and end at Front Street Tap House and stops will include Great River Brewery, Sippi's, and both the Rock Island and Moline Bent River locations. The ride begins at noon and prizes will be awarded 4:30 P.M.

BBQ Judging will start Sunday at noon. Trophies will be awarded at approximately 3 P.M.

This event is benefiting the Children's Therapy Center of the Quad Cities.

  • The Festival is recognized by the international Blues Foundation with its Keeping the Blues Alive award for U.S. Festival.
  • Two-time Grammy award-winner Terrance Simien will be teaching the kids at United Neighbors in Davenport about the history of the blues and zydeco during the week of the festival.
  • The Blues Festival is partnering with Red White and Boom to offer a free night of blues on the Tent Stage and fireworks on Thursday July 3.
  • George Thorogood and the Destroyers will headline the Festival on Friday July 4.
  • Howlin'Wolf's sax player and bandleader, Eddie Shaw, will receive the MVBS RiverRoad Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday July 5.

We will also unveil the 30th anniversary Blues Festival t-shirt design at the party.

Affordable Summer Day Camp through The Salvation Army

Moline, IL - The Salvation Army is offering a low-cost Summer Day Camp. For the tenth year, children can come spend their summer in a fun-filled and safe setting at the Community Center, located near downtown Moline. The Summer Day Camp runs from June 9th to August 8th.

Children entering kindergarten through 6th grade will be cared for Monday through Friday, 8:45am-4:00pm. A breakfast and lunch are provided each day. IL Child Care Assistance is accepted, and sliding scale fees and scholarships are available.

Activities will include swimming twice a week, weekly field trips to places such as: Niabi Zoo, Fun City, Family Museum and much more. This will be a fun, educational summer for your children!

Space is limited; please stop in at The Salvation Army located at 2200 5th Avenue Moline, IL to register ASAP.

D-Day Documentary Screening at Moline Public Library

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy, the Moline Public Library will show the documentary The Americans on D-Day on Tuesday, June 10th at 6:30 p.m.  Introduction and post-viewing discussion will be presented by Dr. Arthur Pitz.  To register for this event, visit the Moline Public Library (3210 41st Street) or call 309-524-2470.

The Americans on D-Day provides a unique perspective of this momentous day.  Battlefield historian Ellwood von Seibold visits the sites of major action in a restored 1943 Dodge Command car, wearing the appropriate soldiers' uniforms and carrying their equipment.  He provides a tour of action in real time, allowing himself and viewers to experience D-Day from the soldier's perspective.  The film also interviews veterans who participated in the invasion of Normandy and historic footage of soldiers in action.

Kicking Off Summer Festival Fun

The spirit of New Orleans comes up the Mississippi River this summer when The Downtown Rock Island Arts & Entertainment District presents Gumbo Ya Ya, a two-night Mardi Gras party in The District on June 6-7. Cajun, Zydeco, and Jazz bands will tantalize your ears, while Cajun spiced food will heat up your taste buds. Bead tosses, confetti, and a French Quarter marketplace are also part of the fun! Gates open at 5 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Thousands of hot rods will be streaming into the Quad Cities on Thursday, June 12 for the HOT ROD Power Tour. Over 3,500 hot rods and performance vehicles will come from Crown Point, Ind., and arrive in the Quad Cities for Day 6 and proceed to the Isle Casino Hotel from 12-7 p.m. The public is welcome to see this rolling party. It is free for spectators. And throughout the evening, expect to see great cars all over the Quad Cities.

Join the thousands of other bicycle riders for Ride the River on Sunday, June 15. This is the 30th year for the annual Father's Day tradition of biking through the Quad Cities. View the Mississippi River from both Quad Cities shorelines on the Illinois and Iowa side from the seat of your bicycle during this festive event that the entire family can enjoy. New in the Quad Cities

The new Children's Garden now open at the Quad City Botanical Center in Rock Island, Illinois, creates a whimsical interpretation of nature. The caterpillar gateway opens into a world of "fours" - underfoot is the human sundial, with the four seasons, and the four directions, the four way tests, factors of four, games of four, and flowers of four! Finally, a child-size version of the Mississippi River with a meandering shallow stream for children to play in the water.

Modern Woodmen Park added a new Ferris Wheel standing 110-feet outside of the left field wall of the ballpark. It opens Memorial Day Weekend. The Ferris wheel will highlight an amusement lineup to include a new ride called a "Drop and Twist," an expanded 300-foot long zip line, an auto-belay rock climbing wall, and many other new games and attractions planned at the home of the Quad Cities River Bandits in Davenport, Iowa. In a nationwide vote, Modern Woodmen Park was voted the "Best Minor League Ballpark" in the 2013 USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Travel Awards.

Museums & Music

Beloved Irish crooner, and star of 13 PBS national TV specials, Daniel O'Donnell comes to the Adler Theatre in Davenport for one performance only at 7 pm on Wednesday, June 4. O'Donnell sings, dances and charms his way into viewer's hearts with a mix of country, pop hits and fan favorites.

The River Music Experience in downtown Davenport celebrates their 10th anniversary with a weekend of music on June 12-15 with great acts such as the MarchFourth Marching Band, The Candymakers, Diplomats of Solid Sound, Lissie, and more. On Friday, June 13 is their BeeRME Beer Tasting.

Enter the enchanting world of Dora the Explorer, her animal-rescuing cousin Diego and their friends Boots and Baby Jaguar at the Family Museum's upcoming exhibit, Nickelodeon's Dora and Diego - Let's Explore! Visitors can explore Isa's Flowery Garden, help Tico gather nuts, set sail with the Pirate Piggies' crew, and search for baby animals in the Rainforest Maze. Also journey to the Purple Planet via a rocket ship, and learn how to care for baby animals in the Animal Rescue Center. The 3,000 square feet exhibit is perfect for preschool children 2 to 5 years of age. The exhibit is scheduled to open May 24 and ends August 31.

Try a Segway Tour

Quad City Segway is Iowa's only guided Segway tours. It takes riders as they glide effortlessly along the scenic Mississippi riverfront bike path learning about area history and landmarks. Before setting out, riders go through a short training session. You can select a one-hour tour for $30 or a two-hour tour for $55. Quad City Segway operates out of the Union Station Visitor Center, 102 S. Harrison St., Davenport.

WQPT to Host Special Preview and Panel Discussion of Documentary Series COMING BACK WITH WES MOORE

MOLINE, IL - WQPT, Quad Cities PBS will host a sneak preview of "Coming Back with Wes Moore" from noon-1:30 p.m. May 29 at the Quad Cities Waterfront Convention Center in Bettendorf, Iowa. The program is a signature event in the WQPT "Embracing Our Military" initiative.

The event, which is open free to the public, will engage the community in a discussion on some of the most difficult questions related to returning from war. Light refreshments will be served and reservations are encouraged by contacting BE-Brasel@wiu.edu

"Coming Back with Wes Moore" is a three-part documentary tells personal stories of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans as they struggle to reintegrate into society.

In the series, which will air on WQPT at 7 p.m. in three parts on Wednesdays, May 21, 28 and June 4, Moore takes viewers with him into the personal lives of different soldiers as they attempt to reintegrate into society, establish new identities and?for many?find a new mission.

"We want to better humanize re-integration by taking the audience into the lives of these men and women as they return from war," said Moore, who is an Army combat veteran. "I want to make sure people understand these stories and who these people are who are coming back from combat."

Over the course of three episodes, "Coming Back"  follows Moore into the lives of Army Sgt. Andy Clark of Denver, CO; Army Sgt. Bobby Henline of San Antonio, TX; Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Letrice Titus of Syracuse, NY; Army National Guard Sgt. Brad Farnsley of Fort Knox, KY; Earl Johnson of Baltimore, MD; Air Force Staff Sgt. Stacy Pearsall of Charleston, SC; Army National Guard Lt. Col. and Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth of Schaumburg, IL; Army Sgt. Brian "Taylor" Urruela of Tampa, FL; and husband and wife Marine Sgt. Christopher Phelan and Air Force Capt. Star Lopez of Los Angeles, CA.

Celebrate "The Fault in Our Stars" at Rock Island Library on June 4

Rock Island, IL: Readers of all ages eagerly awaiting the release of the film version of "The Fault in Our Stars," by John Green, can celebrate with other fans at the Rock Island Library this summer.

The library will host a "The Fault in Our Stars" celebration at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, June 4, in the Rock Island Public Library's Community Room, 401 19th Street. The event celebrates the upcoming movie release with crafts, trivia, showings of "vlogbrothers" videos by John and Hank Green, and refreshments. Due to the book's strong crossover readership, the event is for both teens and adults.

Published in January 2012, The Fault in Our Stars debuted at the number one spot on The New York Times  best seller list, and held that position for seven consecutive weeks. It also made USA Today's list of the top 10 books of 2012. The book tells the story of two teenagers, Hazel and Augustus, who meet in a cancer support group. The film leads are played by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort.

June 2 marks the start of the library's Paws to Read Summer Reading program, which offers reading contests for children, teens and adults, education and entertainment events through Aug. 2. Other events during that week include :

Getting to Know Your iPad or Tablet: 6:30 pm, Tuesday, June 3, Main Library. The free demo for all ages covers basic features and tips and tricks for using an iPad or Android tablet. Participants are encouraged to bring their devices.

Library Independent Movie Night: 6:00 pm, Thurs., June 5, Main Library. The event includes a free movie showing, discussion and popcorn. The comedy, in Dutch, German and English, is the story of a family who suddenly reinvents themselves when Eva, their youngest and only girl, invites a German exchange student into their home. Independent movies are not rated.

Paws to Read Summer Carnival and Pet Parade: Noon to 3:00 pm, Saturday, June 7, Main Library parking lot. Free games, bounce house, face-painting, magic, chalk art, free hot dogs and pop, hourly prize drawings, and special presentations, including the pet parade and a K-9 police dog demo by the Rock Island Police Department. The library requests that pet parade entrants pre-register. Forms are available at libraries and online. Event attendees can also sign up for summer reading and pick up a prize, while supplies last. In the event of rain, most events will move inside.

The majority of the library's children's summer education programs, including weekly reading practice with a therapy dog, children's storytimes, Lego block clubs, math club, art, and drama workshops, start in the second week of June. On Monday, June 16, the library hosts two free performances of Mad Science of Iowa Plus, and on Thursday, June 19, an appearance by Serengeti Steve, with his live "Reptile Experience" show.
