River Bend Foodbank will celebrate "Extreme Kids Helping Kids" on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  This family and kid-oriented event will be held in their new and larger facility at 4010 Kimmel Drive in Davenport.  It is an opportunity to teach school-aged kids about service to others while having fun at the same time.

Since most food drives happen in the fall, the Foodbank is especially needy in the spring when supplies are low.  Families, school and other youth groups are encouraged to collect and bring non-perishable food items to the Foodbank where they can enter to win prizes for the largest contribution (by weight). There will be family entertainment by the area's top children's entertainers. Special stations will be set up with, face painting, clowning, balloon artistry, caricature drawing and more, in a carnival-like atmosphere.  Entry to the event is free.

River Bend Foodbank has been serving the greater Quad-City area since 1982.  In addition to larger warehouse space, the new facility now has industrial-sized refrigeration; making it possible to provide even more fresh and refrigerated foods.

River Bend Foodbank is the largest hunger relief organization in the Quad Cities and surrounding communities, distributing more than 8 million lbs of food annually to more than 300 charitable feeding programs throughout a 22 county service area in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. Childhood hunger programs include the Backpack Program which provides up to 1700 Quad City children with nourishing food to take home on the weekends during the school year, the Kids Café Program providing evening meals to children at three sites, and the Mobile Food Pantry which directly feeds thousands of families each month.

In 2012, the Department of Labor reports that a combined 229 workers were killed on the job site in Illinois and Iowa, in addition to 170,500 reported workplace injuries. These numbers are simply unacceptable. 2013 workplace fatality and injury statistics are not yet available.

Janice Payne will sing a solo and members from AFM Local 67 will play TAPS.  Refreshments will be served after the service.

SEARCH FOR MEANING IN LIFE
Elaine Kresse will offer a class entitled "Search for Meaning in Life"   at 7 pm on Tuesdays May 6, 13. 20, 27, June 3, June 10 in the Board Room.
Two books are recommended , but reading them is not essential for class: Staying Sane in a Crazy World by Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine, founder of the Center for New Thinking; and A Tale of Boxes: The Role of Myth in Creating and Changing our Stories by Rev. Robert T. Latham.
Wine explores how to cope successfully with an unfair/meaningless universe by giving us examples (stories). We'll look at his ten steps to sanity using reason in stories. This will be complemented with Latham's approach about taking charge of myths that shaped and continued to shape us. "Freedom is the privilege of choosing my own box," writes Latham.  There will be some journaling and
"self-inflicted" homework as we reflect on related topics from two perspectives and come to our individual conclusions.

Questions call the UUCQC office at 563-359-0816

Tickets now available for local service club's "party with a purpose"

BETTENDORF, IA - As it prepares to host the Eighth Annual Lobsterfest, the Bettendorf Rotary Club will strive to continue the history of its "party with a purpose" that provides the community with direct grants and scholarships (www.bettendorfrotary.com/lobsterfest).

The New England-style lobster boil is set for Saturday, June 14th - 5:30 to 10 PM - at Rivermont Collegiate, 1821 Sunset Drive in Bettendorf. Tickets are priced at $75.00 each or a table of eight for $520.00 (a savings of $10 per ticket). They can be purchased by calling (563) 445-4264 or visiting www.bettendorfrotary.com/tickets. The event is open to the general public.

Thanks to funds raised at last year's event, the Bettendorf Rotary Club's Charitable Giving Board awarded direct grants to area charities totaling $23,000. The club also awarded $7,000 in scholarships to students pursuing higher education. Both totals were record amounts.

Similar levels are the goal again in 2014 because of major sponsorships from THE National Bank, Humana Health, Ascentra Credit Union, Professional Touch Cleaning, Weerts Funeral Home, Iowa American Water, McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, RJS & Associates, Bowe Machine and Werner Restoration. Community awareness is heightened through media sponsors Mediacom/OnMedia, Quad-City Times and WOC News Talk 1420 AM.

Another important service component is delivered through a relationship with Scott Community College's Culinary Arts program led by Chef Bradley Scott (http://www.eicc.edu/future-students/our-programs/culinary/index.aspx). Besides helping to prepare the meal, it also makes further scholarship opportunities available for SCC students.

Finally, the event welcomes several groups such as the Culinary Kids of Family Resources, Inc. and Boy Scout Troop 24 that assist other volunteers in delivering the fresh meal of Maine lobsters.

The Bettendorf Rotary Club (www.bettendorfrotary.com), chartered on May 22, 1957, has more than 100 members fulfilling the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" in a variety of local, regional and national community volunteer projects. The club meets each Wednesday at Noon at Fortune Garden Restaurant, 2211 Kimberly Road, Bettendorf. In addition to the website, you can find the club on Facebook (www.facebook.com/bettendorfrotary).

Bettendorf Rotary Club is part of Rotary International (www.rotary.org), founded in 1905 by Paul Harris, a Chicago businessman and University of Iowa alumnus. The international organization, now based in Evanston, IL, has more than one million members participating in 32,000 clubs located in more than 200 countries.
