Weekly Events Header
Hello!

Yet another exciting week downtown includes the opening of four outer space exhibits at the Figge Art Museum!  NASA | Art: 50 years of Exploration features pieces from NASA's collection and the National Air and Space Museum.  Blast Off! - Studio 1 allows the little ones to do what NASA did: be inspired by outer space and create!

Exploring NASA lights up the night sky with a one-of-a-kind projection of images on the western exterior of the Figge building. The University of Iowa is considered a pioneer of space research; the fourth exhibit will explore the past 54 years of exploration and the university's role in it. Other events at the museum include Fridays at the Figge, Drawing Naturescapes, and Art in the Middle.

Interested in beer AND science?  The German American Heritage Center is hosting speaker Brad Sturgeon, a home brewer and certified taster, to guide attendees through the chemistry of brewing with the enjoyment of samples along the way!  Also, stop by Modern Woodmen Park on Wednesday to see the Bandits host the Lake County Captains on another Pay Your Bill Wednesday!

Guy Penrod brings his new, number one album to the Adler Theatre on Friday night.  The 2011 Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee spent fourteen years with the Grammy and Dove award-winning Gaither Vocal Band before making his Grand Ole Opry debut as a solo artist last year.  Also, don't forget that the Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival is right around the corner and tickets are on sale now!

HAYWYRE and MINDSPYK perform with Ghost Science in the Redstone Room on Saturday night.  These unique artists bring a flavor of hip-hop, dubstep, and electronica to the River Music Experience.  The RME live lunch series this week features Sweet Wednesday, Tony Hoeppner, Dave Smith, and Randy Leasman.  Improve your own musical chops with Songwriters in the Round, Acoustic Music Club, and Open Mic Night.

Tammy McCann headlines Polyrhythms Third Sunday Jazz Workshop and Matinee series this week.  McCann has toured with Ray Charles along with her gospel group.  More shows at RME this week include Friday Live at 5, You Knew Me When with Emjay, Rock Camp USA Concert - Session 2, Bella Soul, The Milltown Wranglers, and the Quad City KIX Band, who will also perform at Music on the Levee.

Cool off with Public Skates at River's Edge Friday through Wednesday and beat the heat!  Also, Heartland Jam is coming up on July 20 and 21; look for information regarding the festival in next week's newsletter.

See you downtown!

On July 21, 2012, Connection Church throws a party. In effort to build neighborhood community and to help kids in need, Connection will host a Block Party featuring free food, fun games, and a school supply giveaway.

At 4pm the party begins with free food and exciting games. Two in?atable bouncers, a dunk tank, a photo booth and other games, as well as a free raf?e for an iPod and passes to Splash Landing and Niabi Zoo will provide a fun, family-friendly evening. Walking tacos, popcorn, and snow cones will be available for free to eat.

Besides having fun, the Block Party will be an opportunity to give backpacks and school supplies to kids in need. Last year's party saw 40 kids receive backpacks and school supplies; this year, the goal is to give away even more.

Jason Holtgrewe, a pastor at Connection, believes the Block Party is a great way to help those in need. "Not only is this party a way to bring neighbors together for a little fun, it's also an opportunity to be there for others," says Jason. "There are more families in our city than we realize who need help meeting the ?nancial demands of  another school year."

Quad City families wanting school supplies are encouraged to call Connection at 563-355-0919 before the day of the party. Those who don't call can still receive supplies, but please know, they'll be handed out on a ?rst-come, ?rst-served basis.

Connection is throwing a party and giving away school supplies on July 21st 4-7pm. The location of the party is 4374 State Street, Bettendorf. Please call 563-355-0919 or email jason@connectionqc.org for more information.
Washington, DC - Congressman Bobby Schilling (IL-17) today released the following statement in honor of the 150th Anniversary since President Abraham Lincoln signed Public Law 37-122, establishing the Rock Island Arsenal:

"The 17th Congressional District of Illinois is home to many remarkable folks and features, one of them being the Quad Cities' Rock Island Arsenal.  In the 150 years since its establishment by President Lincoln on July 11, 1862, the Arsenal has played an invaluable role in our national security and our region's economy, directly employing nearly 8,000 folks from both sides of the river and both sides of the aisle.

"Representing the hard-working men and women of the Rock Island Arsenal is an honor.  I look forward to continuing my work with Congressman Loebsack and the rest of the Illinois/Iowa delegation to preserve the Arsenal's future and help ensure it can continue providing for our troops and contributing to our region's economy for another 150 years."

On June 29, 2012, Schilling and Congressman Dave Loebsack (IA-02) introduced a bipartisan Resolution in the House of Representatives to recognize the 150th Anniversary of the Rock Island Arsenal and its ongoing contributions to our nation's security and the Quad Cities economy.  In May, they partnered with area senators in introducing the bipartisan and bicameral Army Arsenal Strategic Workload Enhancement Act, which would help to keep arsenals like Rock Island warm and employees' skills sharp by requiring that the Army produce a plan to ensure they are properly workloaded.

In the Fiscal Year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Schilling and Loebsack included a landmark provision lifting the cap on the number of public-private partnerships that arsenals are able to enter into, maximizing the possibility for private-sector job growth at installations like the Rock Island Arsenal.  They also included in the 2012 bill a provision designating the Rock Island Arsenal as a Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence, further improving its ability to enter into public-private partnerships, provide for our men and women in combat, and strengthen the Arsenal's core skills and manufacturing abilities.  Both provisions were signed into law as part of the comprehensive Fiscal Year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act.

In the Fiscal Year 2013 House conference report, Schilling and Loebsack built on their prior successes and included language ensuring that the Department of Defense recognizes in its overarching national security strategy the critical manufacturing work done at facilities like the Rock Island Arsenal.  It also reviews how to maintain those skills and therefore the employees doing the work.  They also partnered with area senators in introducing the bipartisan and bicameral Army Arsenal Strategic Workload Enhancement Act, which would help to keep arsenals like Rock Island warm and employees' skills sharp by requiring that the Army produce a plan to ensure they are properly workloaded.

Davenport, Iowa, July 3, 2012 - A local best-selling author will help launch the summer theme at Vander Veer Botanical Park this Friday, July 6 at 2pm. Ann Hailey, author of the "Fishscale Girl" series will be on hand at Vander Veer Conservatory to read from  her book and kick off the "Two Rivers - One World" theme.

This free event is open to the public and media, and is part of a program to help children explore the delicate balance of nature through a variety of exciting summer programs being held at Vander Veer Botanical Park. Sponsored by Davenport Parks and Recreation and The Friends of Vander Veer, children can learn through the eyes of Fishscale Girl, who discovers that her Amazon River and the Mississippi River face similar challenges with major environmental problems such as pollution and erosion.

Fishscale Girl, a small doll made from an actual fish scale, is the main character in a series of pictures books written and photographed by Quad-City author Ann Hailey. Fishscale Girl moves from her home in the Amazon to Davenport, Iowa, and learns about the similarities and differences of her new and old homes.

The Vander Veer Conservatory display featuring Fishscale Girl will be open to the public as well. Refreshments will be served. A Fishscale Girl nature walk will also occur at 3:00 p.m.
