Entrants must have an account established in his or her own name at Ascentra. One scholarship is for high school students planning to enter college.  The other scholarship is for members age 19 or over, considered non-traditional-aged or continuing education students.   The scholarship entrants will be judged on a 500 word essay on the topic, "With college tuition costs dramatically increasing year after year, besides scholarships, what are some ways that students can help offset the costs of higher education?" All entries are judged on their essay, resume, awards, extracurricular activities, volunteer services and work experience. Applications can be picked up at any of our branches or printed off of our website at www.ascentra.org.  The link to the form can be found on our Community Involvement section of our News/Events/Promotions page.  The deadline to apply is March 1, 2013. MOLINE, IL -WQPT and the Moline Foundation invite you to participate in River Vision 2020. This innovative project is designed to bring together citizens and community leaders to discuss ideas to enhance the Moline river front along the Mississippi River.  "We want to hear from everyone in our community on the ways they think we can best use our riverfront as well as the Floreciente neighborhood and the Moline Centre in downtown Moline," said Joy Boruff, Executive Director, The Moline Foundation.

The project includes community forums which take place on Wednesday, February 6, Thursday, February 28 and Thursday, March 14 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Western Illinois University Riverfront Campus, 3300 River Drive, Moline, IL. Everyone in the Quad Cities region is invited to participate in one or all of the community forums.

In addition, students from Western Illinois University and members of The Network, are creating videos on their ideas for the riverfront and everyone is invited to view them and vote for their favorite by going to wqpt.org/rivervision2020.  Community voting will begin February 25 and continue until midnight on March 25. The winning video creator receives a $500 educational stipend from the Moline Foundation.

For more information on River Vision 2020 go to wqpt.org/rivervision2020.

Faith Lutheran Church, Moline, is hosting a "Benefit for 4 Sisters" trivia night on Friday at the church, 1611 41st St., Moline. Gardening and food are common threads uniting all humankind. This Thursdays topic will motivate us so we grow seeds of positive change and take the health of our selves, our family, and our communities back into our own hands.

Taura will present the problem of the ridiculousness of this countries food system (unhealthy, costly, gmo, bad for the environment, ineffective) , and provide the remedy : Home gardens. Urban gardens. Local. permaculture. organic. natural. It is time to a 'back to basics' approach.

Taura strongly supports the idea that all the worlds ills can be cured in a garden. In previous war times in this country it was patriotic for every family to grow their own victory garden. Now it is almost illegal

Open discussion on the foods that can be grown locally as well as the details of planting will follow.

The evening will start with the Tibetan Singing Bowl and a short meditation to experience the power of sound vibrations.

"We don't need a law against McDonald's or a law against slaughterhouse abuse--we ask for too much salvation by legislation. All we need to do is empower individuals with the right philosophy and the right information to opt out en masse."
? Joel Salatin

About the presenter:
Taura is trained in Reiki and is an aspiring alternative health practitioner. Her passion for gardening has grown over the past two years as she has seen the positive changes a garden can provide for people and community.

Rock Island, IL: If gray winter skies have left you feeling down, a new partnership between the Rock Island Public Library and the Quad City Botanical Center could lift your spirits with some free tropical warmth. Library cardholders can now check out a seven-day family Botanical Center membership at the Rock Island Main, 30/31 and Southwest Branch Libraries.

Each pass provides free admission to the Botanical Center's tropical sun garden and other attractions for up to four people for seven days. The pass can be checked out with a valid library card at the Main Library Circulation and Children's Room desks, and at the front desks of the 30/31 and Southwest Branch Libraries. Because the passes are not suitable for placement in the book drop or inter-library delivery, they must be picked up and returned in person to the library branch listed on the back.

There is no charge for the seven-day pass, and each pass may be used multiple times within the check-out period. Passes are non-renewable and have a $1 per day late fee.

February is Book Lovers month, and what better way to celebrate that love than by eating your words? Local cooks are invited to enter a tasty edible book baked good to be judged in one of three categories: Best Tasting, Most Elaborate and Best Looking. Bakers should call 309-732-7330 by Wednesday, Feb. 13 to indicate that they will enter the contest. Completed works of edible book art should arrive at the library by 11:00 am on Saturday. Each item should be accompanied by an information card listing the title of the entry, the name of the book it is based on, author and creator's name.  Prize in each category is a gift card to a cooking store.

Participation in the contest is not required to attend the event. Volunteer judges will be drawn from the list of attendees, with voting starting at 11:30 am. The event is open to the public.
