The German American Heritage Center is proud to share the importance of civility in our community by bringing Jim Leach, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to Davenport's Saint Ambrose University on Saturday June 16th at 12p.m. Leach's visit is part of the American Civility Tour, a 50-state tour he launched in November 2009, shortly after starting his four-year term as NEH chairman.

During his visit, Leach will deliver a public lecture at 12 p.m. in the Galvin Fine Arts Center at SAU titled "Civility, With A German Immigrant Accent." In addition to his key comments on civility in American discourse, Leach will refer to the always lively, sometimes rowdy role of German immigrants in the 1860 election of Abraham Lincoln. The event is free and open to the public.

Leach's Civility Tour seeks to call attention to the need for civility in public discourse. He worries that America's leaders and citizens have increasingly resorted to extremist rhetoric, abandoning civil debate and discourse for name-calling, and provocative actions. We must reverse that trend, he says, if we are to continue to earn the respect of each other and the nations around the world.

"Civilization requires civility," Leach says. "Words matter. Little is more important for the world's leading democracy in this change-intensive century than establishing an ethos of thoughtfulness and decency of expression in the public square."

Leach began his four-year term as NEH chairman in August 2009 after serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for 30 years. As a congressman representing southeastern Iowa, he chaired the Banking and Financial Services Committee, the Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs and the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. He also founded and co-chaired the Congressional Humanities Caucus.

Please visit gahc.org or call 563-322-8844 for more information. The Galvin Fine Arts Center is located at 518 W Locust St. in Davenport.

This event is sponsored by the German American Heritage Center, Quad City Times, St. Ambrose University, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Created in 1965 as an independent federal agency, the National Endowment for the Humanities supports research and learning in history, literature, philosophy, and other areas of the humanities by funding selected, peer-reviewed proposals from around the nation. Additional information about the National Endowment for the Humanities and its grant programs is available at: www.neh.gov.

The library is "serving up" food-themed reading contests and more than 103 events for children, teens and adults. Activities begin Monday, June 4, with reading logs and entries due back to the library by Friday, July 27.

To see the entire list of events, see "Summer @ Your Library" on the library website.

Reading is So Delicious for Kids

The delicious selection of things for kids to do this summer at the library includes "all-you-can-eat" reading programs that reward entrants as they read. The Reading is So Delicious summer reading club offers reading logs for three age groups: A Read-to-Me club log for ages two to five, the I'm a Reader book club for ages six to eight, and the Ravenous Reader log for ages nine to 11. With each contest, children earn prizes for reaching age-appropriate reading goals at three levels, and an extra chance to win a Movie, Olympic or Outdoor Fun prize basket. Forms will be available at all Rock Island Libraries starting June 4.

Families can also stretch their summer fun budget with free events from June 4 through August 22. Events are free and open to any member of the public, regardless of library card status or participation in the reading clubs. The library offers both weekly events, including storytimes, "book-tastings," and a math munch program with Elizabeth.

Special events and performers include two Friday Fest movies (Ratatouille and Chicken Run) and performances by Niabi Zoo, award-winning ventriloquist Kevin Horner, a birthday bash for library mascot Max Reader Mouse, magician Rick Eugene, Mad Science demos, the Reading is So Delicious puppet show with Rob "Mr. E" Erdmann, and the Incredible Bats show, featuring live fruit bats and education from Daniel and Sharon Peterson, of IncredibleBats.com.

Teens: Feed your Mind - READ!

Feed Your Mind- READ is the Teen Summer Reading club theme. Readers ages 12 to 18 turn in a reading card when they complete at least six hours of reading, or a program card for attending any one of 20 events. Participants can enter multiple times, and earn more chances to win books, DVDs, gift cards, or the grand prize, an Amazon Kindle® eReader. Teens can also earn gift cards for attending Iron Chef or Food Jeopardy game programs. Entry boxes and cards will be available at the June 4 Food Myths Kickoff (5:00 to 6:30 pm, Main Library), and at all Rock Island Library locations.

The more than 20 teen events this summer include movie and food craft events, pioneer cooking demos, cupcake and cookie decorating, pizza and international food tastings, Iron Chef and chocolate and food jeopardy contests, and non-food tie-dying and gaming nights. See the library website or pick up a free brochure for details!

Books are Brain Food for Adults

Adults 18 and up also have chances to win and take advantage of more free events, with the Books Are Brain Food reading club. The ample list of adult programs this summer include the Stephen Foster music program on June 5,  food and fitness education, OverDrive demos, monthly independent movies, four "recipe club" cooking demos and recipe swaps, and a series of three "dinner and a movie" events, where participants can bring in carry-out food or a picnic while enjoying a food-related movie.

To enter the reading contest, adults fill out an entry form for every book they read between June 4 and July 27. Print, audiobook and eReader formats all qualify. Entry forms and boxes will be available at all Rock Island locations. Top prize is a new Sony® eReader. Entry deadline is July 27, with prizes drawn after Aug. 3.

For a full list of events, pick up the summer program brochure at any Rock Island Library, or visit the library website. Reading logs and entry forms will be available at the Rock Island Main Library, 30/31 Branch and Southwest Branch starting June 4.

Davenport, Iowa, May 23, 2012 - On Friday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m. city officials and other guests will be on hand to break ground at the new Enabling Garden at Vander Veer Botanical Park. The site for the new Enabling Garden is located near the current entrance of the Conservatory at Vander Veer Park. The public and media are invited to attend.

The Enabling Garden is an accessible garden and features plantings that stimulate all the senses, and includes planting beds and containers raised for comfortable reach. This accessible garden can be used by persons of any age or ability and includes garden elements that appeal to all five senses. The gardens are designed to improve and maintain the physical mental and social health of everyone.

The Enabling Garden eliminates physical barriers to gardening, creating an area where people of all ages and abilities can garden together. Key features of the Vander Veer Enabling Garden are: accessible paths throughout, garden beds and containers at differing elevations, water feature, pergola, and a riot of color and textures.

In addition to being a beautiful place to visit the enabling garden will be host to a variety of Horticulture Therapy programs. Horticulture Therapy is defined by the American Horticulture Therapy Association "AHTA" as an engagement of a person in gardening activities, facilitated by a trained therapist to achieve specific therapeutic treatment goals. The activities in this space will be varied according to our customer's abilities. The outdoor gardens will also be available for rental for fundraising events, wedding ceremonies and receptions and other events.

An artist's conception of the completed Enabling Garden can be found on the Parks and Recreation's website on the Vander Veer Botanical Park page. The web address is: www.cityofdavenportiowa.com/parks.

Construction is expected to be complete sometime in mid July. A new entrance to the Conservatory is also planned as part of the Enabling Garden construction, and may necessitate closing the Conservatory for a minimal amount of time. Patrons should check the Parks and Recreation website for any notice on closure during the construction period.

Taco Tuesday to benefit the Friends of Jordan Scholarship Fund will be held on Tuesday, May 29th at Mulligan's, 310 W 1st Avenue, Coal Valley.

The event will run from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Please come and share a good time with friends and family! Rudy's Tacos will be sold
for 'donation' only. Proceeds will provide scholarships for the 2012-2013 school year.

Independent Scholars' Evenings:
"Social Networking Etiquette"
Is Social Networking Rudeness on the Rise?

By

Mark McLaughlin
Author
Public Relations Director at Results Marketing.

Mark McLaughlin will explore the transgressions of online etiquette in his
presentation. He will provide tips on how to avoid annoying or rude behavior. He
will also provide suggestions on how to nurture positive Internet relationships.
McLaughlin believes that annoying or inconsiderate social networking behavior
is, in part, a product of the fast times in which we live.
"Our culture is passing through a time of brisk technological development," he
says. "Modern life is changing at a frantic pace - and that's okay. But as the
world changes, sometimes people concentrate too much on their own objectives and
manners fly out the window - and that's not okay."
Because Facebook and other social networks are free, people sometimes feel that
"anything goes" -- but in reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
"Abusing a free service is almost doubly inconsiderate," he said. "People should
be grateful for the service and treat its other users with respect.

Think about this social networking scenario: Suppose you are an author and some
of your Facebook friends are also authors. But since they write books in the
same genre as your works, they are also competitors. When those authors post ads
for their books on your Facebook page without asking you, are they being rude?
