Reserve your place at this year's 4th Annual QCI Fundraising Breakfast

"Honoring Our Founders, Embracing Our Future"

Join Quad Cities Interfaith on Tuesday, November 13th, 2012 for QC Interfaith's 4th Annual Fundraising Breakfast at the St. Ambrose Rogalski Center from 7:30am - 8:30am. This year's theme is "Honoring our Founders and Embracing Our Future" Reserve your seat or table of 8 for your congregation. There is no cost for the breakfast, but this is a fundraising event, and there will be an ask for individuals to support our work. As you know, funding for the work we do always difficult to come by and the more sustained individual donors we have, the stronger we become. This is a meaningful one hour event- short but powerful!

This year's theme is to highlight our work ,but to reflect on how this organization came to be and to
honor four of the leaders who helped create QCI in 1986. This year's leaders to be honored or remembered are:

Reverend Ken Kuenning, Pastor Emeritus, Church of Peace in Rock Island

Monsignor Marvin Mottet, former pastor, Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport

Reverend William Grimes, former pastor, Second Baptist Church, Rock Island

The Honorable Thomas Kilbride

New this year! We encourage individuals, community groups and congregations to take an ad in our Ad Book, which is another way to show your support for QCI's work. Pricing is as follows: Breakfast sponsor $500.00, Full page $350.00, Half page $200.00, and Business Card $100.00. To place your ad, please call Beth at QCI 563-322-4910 ASAP.

This is always a popular event so we strongly urge you to make your reservations as soon as you can by calling 563.322.4910. Can't wait to see you!

What's New at QCI

Quad Cities Interfaith held a Fire of Faith Gathering on October 25, 2012 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport, Iowa. Our event brought people of many faiths together to work on Rekindling our Communities, Rekindling our Economy, and Rekindling our Democracy. The event was a re-commitment ceremony for the 20 member congregations and explanation of the Fire of Faith Campaign kicking off in 2013. Through Fire of Faith QCI will provide intensive support and training for members to reinvigorate their congregations and strengthen their connections to the faith community in the Quad Cities. For more information, contact Leslie at QCI.

Pictured below is Reverend David Bigsby, Gamaliel of IL, as he addresses our event by informing us of the introduction of the Fire of Faith Principles. Thank you Rev. Bigsby for coming to our event. We appreciate that you could be apart of our program.

QCI Issue Updates

Transportation and Jobs Equity
As part of  Gamaliel of Illinois, the task force is working to secure a State wide Project Labor Agreement (PLA) from the contractors, unions and Illinois Department of Transportation that will include requirements for diversity in the work force on all transportation projects in Illinois. The Task Force is also looking to build a local monitoring committee in early 2013, that will hold accountable IL DOT on the Community Benefits Agreement principles it agreed to for the passenger rail project coming to the Quad Cities. Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 14th at 10:00am at Church of Peace-12th and 12th in Rock Island. Join us! For information, please contact Reverend David Geenen, Task Force Chairman at daveg@15thavenuechristainchurch.org

Healthcare

Imagine this situation:  Your six-year-old child has a fever and a sore throat.  You're worried, so you take him to the doctor. You say, "I notice he talks little.  Little by little and he has difficulty eating and swallowing."  The doctor asks you, "Does he have a sore throat?" Pretty straightforward, right?
But now imagine the same situation when your first language isn't English, and you have to bring someone, in this case a family friend, to interpret for you, and this is how the friend translates what you told the doctor:  "She says he is talking like, like lazy, whatever he says all the time, and plus he is not eating at all."  Then, when the doctor asks about the sore throat, your no doubt well-meaning friend keeps interrupting and doesn't let you answer the question.
Research is starting to show that medical communication problems caused by language barriers are not only distressing, they are also potentially dangerous.
Medical interpretation and translation are key health care services in reducing health disparities.  There are many other issues of disparity, of course: geography, ethnicity, physical and mental limitations, but the disparities caused by language services in our communities are the current focus of the QCI Health Equity Task Force.
Our next meeting is Thursday, November 29, 2012, at 6:30 PM in the QCI office.  We will be providing an orientation for new members on the work we have done to date and our proposed plans for 2013.  Please join us.  We hope to have at least one representative from every congregational member of QCI as we address the challenges of improving health equity in the Quad Cities!

Immigration

The immigration task force will working on their issue and action for 2013 at their meeting at 5:30pm on Tuesday, November 27th at the Village Inn on Harrison Street in Davenport. We are looking for every member congregation to send a representative to this task force. Please call QCI office at 563.322.4910 for more information.

Education Equity

QCI is in the process of developing a round table on education and is looking for clergy and community leaders to join together to establish round table that will identify and advance local issues and connect to regional and national education  issues. If  you are interested please email us at qcinterfaith@gmail.com. A kick off meeting will be announced in November!

RED CROSS SAYS THE BEST WAY TO HELP IS MONETARY DONATIONS

As the Red Cross seeks donations to aid the east coast storm victims, NorthPark and SouthPark Malls encourage our shoppers to do their part. The American Red Cross is advising that the greatest way to make a positive impact is to simply give donations in the form of money to help with the primary needs of food, water, shelter and medical help.

Starting today, there will be a collection site located at Guest Services, which is located at Younkers Court in NorthPark and in the Management Office at SouthPark Mall. Both Malls are partnering with the American Red Cross to collect such monetary donations in the form of cash or check.

Donations will also be accepted online at www.redcross.org/hurricane-sandy. More information is available at www.north-park-mall-ia.com or www.shopsouthparkmall-il.com. With a few simple clicks, donations will directly impact those in need.

How much help we can provide in the coming days will be determined in part by your generosity right now. As the storm's effects become more widespread, more people will need our help.

With your help, the Red Cross has already:Opened shelters in 7 states, deploying more than 1,000 Red Cross workers to support
  • relief efforts
  • Mobilized nearly 170 Emergency Response Vehicles to move at a moment's notice
  • Secured more than 230,000 shelf-stable meals
  • Readied thousands of supplies such as cots, comfort kits and clean up kits

Food for Thought runs from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street. To set up for the event, the Main Library will close to the public at noon on Nov. 8 and reopen to Food for Thought guests at 5:00 pm.

Participating chefs Brad Scott, Eudell Watts, III, Eric Hand and Craig Joos, Kyle Verschorre, Martha Cleaveland and Robert Lewis will be offering samples of dishes ranging from starters to desserts. The menu includes:

  • Antipasto station with assorted Cabot Creamery cheeses, warm spinach artichoke dip and garlic dip, assorted olives, vegetables, salami and fresh fruit, Sauté station featuring creamy garlic butter risotto with lagostino and shrimp, both presented by Chef Brad Scott and the Scott Community College culinary arts academy.
  • Mediterranean shrimp and pasta with tomato, olives and garlic from Eric Hand and Chef Craig Joos of the Rock Island HyVee.
  • Bite-size pita with gyro topping, mini-pulled pork sandwich and crostini toast served by Chef Kyle Verschorre, of Doc's Inn
  • A flavorful and healthy chicken stir-fry prepared by Chef Robert Lewis, the "happy diabetic chef,"
  • Fancy fettucchine with artichokes and chicken, accompanied by creamy mushroom and panzanella bruschettas, served by Eudell Watts, III, of Eudell's Specialty Foods.
  • Dessert prepared by Chef Martha Cleaveland, Blue Cat Brew Pub.

Food for Thought transforms the historic 1903 library building into a spot for dining, socializing and silent auction bidding. Admission includes wines poured by Thad Miller, craft brew samples from Dan Cleaveland of the Blue Cat Brew Pub, complimentary soft drinks, and musical entertainment by the BHC Jazz Combo and Lee Blackmon.

Guests can bid on 35 books signed by their authors, as well as other unique gift items, including a private home dinner party for four, home pizza party, baskets and packages from local businesses. One-of-a-kind tote and book bags, made by Adventure Orange DIY boutique from retired library banners, will also be included in the silent auction.

The fundraising event helps the Rock Island Public Library Foundation grant requests for special programs and projects that are outside the Rock Island Library's normal operating budget. Rock Island Library Foundation dollars support special purchases of materials, equipment, beautification projects. Previous Foundation grants have funded the library's Bookletters service, renovations to the children's room and self-check machines.

Guests who RSVP in advance receive a preferred admission rate of $30 per person or $50 for a couple. To receive the preferred admission rate, guests should reserve by calling 309-732-7302 by noon on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Without a reservation, walk-in admission is $35 per person. With either rate, admission is payable at the door by cash, check or credit. Donations to the 501c3 Rock Island Library Foundation are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Additional support for the event was received by Modern Woodmen of America, Cabot Creamery cheeses, Friendship Manor, and the Printer's Mark.

For more information, visit the library webpage at www.rockislandlibrary.org or call 309-732-7302.

On the eve of Halloween....John Deere Middle School Students are learning Zombie Survival Skills

(Moline, IL)  Just in time for Halloween.....  John Deere Middle School has created a "Zombie Survival Club". Zombie Survival Club is made available through a partnership between Lights ON for Learning 21st Century Community Learning Centers and the Moline Public Library.

The program was created by Jan Laroche, the teen services librarian who has an interest in Zombie movies and recognized the trends in teen literature about zombies.  She says the club will focus on STEM lessons (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in a fun setting.   "Zombie Survival Club is intended to be a lighthearted, activity based program that develops educational skills through a fun after school curriculum."

Some of the lessons being taught to zombie so they can survive include :
•       Come up with list of essential needs for zombie survival-- water, food, first aid, tools, safe locations, transportation, power/electricity.  Create list for an emergency kit.
•       Discuss types of zombies and spread of infection.
•       Discuss safe drinking water and food supplies. Include how much water is needed, how to find it, and how to make it.
•       Use CDC guidelines to figure out how much water would be needed for a short-term stay.
•       Use math skills to figure out different sizes of bottles and groups of people.
•       Use survival books to discuss how to find safe water in different locations, and discuss purification methods.
•       Discuss food supplies. Include what food to keep on hand in your kit, where to find additional food in both urban and rural settings, and how to grow food.
•       Use calorie guidelines and nutrition information to figure out how long a supply would last. Discuss where food stores might be found and use survival books to identify edible wild plants. Plan a garden for future food supplies. (If necessary, discuss hunting and trapping skills.)
•       Discuss safe locations. Include being prepared to fortify for the short term, ideal locations for immediate retreat, and long-term plans for relocation. Also include discussion about transportation.
•       Discuss power/electricity issues. Include ways to survive without electricity and ways to generate power.
•       Have students research how long electricity would continue after an apocalypse. Make a potato battery and look at plans for a bicycle generator.
•       Discuss power/electricity issues. Include ways to survive without electricity and ways to generate power.
•       Discuss long-term survival plans. Include ways to communicate with other survivors, finding information, and the pros and cons of joining with others.
