The German American Heritage Center and the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities are happy to announce additional showings of companion films to the current "White Rose" Exhibit at GAHC. We had a full house on Sunday, Jan.29 and apologize to those who had to be turned away! Please try to join us for the following opportunities:

On Feb 4th at 4pm the film, "The White Rose" will be re-shown at the Figge Art Museum in the John Deere Auditorium. The Figge is located at 225 W. 2nd St. Davenport, Ia. Admission is $5 or free for students with I.D.

During the Second World War, a small group of students at the University of Munich begin to question the decisions of Germany's Nazi government. The students' form a resistance cell
which they name the "White Rose" and secretly distribute newsletters to the public. At first small in numbers and fearful of discovery, the White Rose begins to gain massive support after a Nazi Gauleiter nearly incites a student riot after a provocative speech. At this point, the matter is taken over by the German Gestapo, who pledges to hunt down and destroy the members of the White Rose.

Lena Stolze stars in this acclaimed feature film based on the true story of five German students- -Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, Alexander Schmorell--and their
professor Kurt Huber who, as the White Rose, protested the Nazi regime.

On February 5th at 1pm and at 4pm, the film, "Sophie Scholl: The Final Days" will be shown at the Figge Art Museum in the John Deere Auditorium. The Figge is located at 225 W. 2nd St. Davenport, IA. Admission for the film is $5 or free for students with I.D.

2005 Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign language Film, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days is the true story of Germanys most famous anti-Nazi heroine brought to thrilling dramatic life. Sophie Scholl stars Julia Jentsch in a luminous performance as the fearless activist of the underground student resistance group, The White Rose.

Using historical records of her incarceration, the film re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholl's life: a journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence in 1943 Munich. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to her comrades, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless. -IMDB review

Congressman Loebsack, area residents, others to testify

WASHINGTON, D.C.–On Friday, January 27, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, will convene a field hearing of the Committee to discuss ways to rebuild the middle class.  Congressman Dave Loebsack will join Harkin as part of the hearing.

"For decades, the middle class has been  falling behind," said Harkin.  "Wages have not kept up with costs, and families' savings accounts have dried up along with home values and good jobs. Iowans are justifiably worried about the future.

"It does not have to be this way.  It is time to rise to these challenges and face them head-on, as a nation, by remembering what made our country great. Creating good jobs, investing in education, rebuilding our infrastructure, and preparing our workforce for the 21st Century will help to ensure that the middle class has a bright future ahead, in Iowa and around the country."

Harkin has held a series of hearings in Washington over the past year examining the causes behind the decline of America's middle class.  Last year, Harkin staff members visited all 99 counties to gather insight into the challenges facing middle class families.  This field hearing will focus on what is working in the Quad Cities to rebuild the backbone of America's economy.

HEARING: "Rebuilding the Middle Class: What Washington can learn from Iowa"

DATE: Friday, January 27, 2012

TIME:

How It's Going in Cuba

Observations on the communist atheist approach to social justice in Cuba will be the topic of a program presented by Margaret Thomas, Vince Thomas and Emma Carrillo Peters Monday, January 30, at 7 pm in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation building, 3707 Eastern Ave., Davenport.  In a program sponsored by the adult religious education committee of the Congregation, open to the public, the speakers will show pictures of their recent trip and tell what they learned about Cuba during the 53rd anniversary of the Revolution there.  For more information, call Margaret at 309 786 6944.

Race:  the Power of Illusion

The Rev. Jay Wolin will present a class based on a film of that title in five sessions beginning Wednesday at 7 pm, February 1, in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation meeting place, 3707 Eastern Ave, Davenport.  Discussions in a safe environment will be part of the series, which is open to the public. Attendance at all the sessions is encouraged, but not required.  Other dates are Feb. 8, 15, 22 and 29.  For more information, call the Congregation at 563 359 0816.

On Saturday, January 28 from 1:00 - 3:00 P.M. the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center will be hosting a Toasty Toes Workshop. Converting a pile of outgrown or underutilized t-shirts into colorful, cozy rugs has never been easier; especially with the help of a most unique loom - a hula hoop!  Each participant needs to bring about a dozen T-shirts (boy's size L or equivalent (men's/women's size S or girl's size L/XL) work well, but other sizes can be adapted) and a pair of sharp, fabric scissors.  If you have access to a quilting tool called a rotary cutter, consider bringing it with the mat and ruler.  Looms will be provided.  This program is ideal for beginning weavers, and would appeal to families, scout groups as well as individuals.  Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-registration is appreciated by calling (563) 328-3286.

The Wapsi River Environmental Education Center can be found 6 miles south of Wheatland or 1 mile northwest of Dixon, Iowa by taking County Road Y4E.  Then turn north at 52nd Avenue and follow the signs for about 1 mile.

TOBYMAC UNPLUGGED - A Night of Stories and Songs, featuring special guest Jamie Grace, is coming this Fall to select cities. It will be a totally different TobyMac show, a time where it's not about the lights, smoke, big stage, numerous musicians... instead it will be more intimate and personal, a "storyteller's night" where TobyMac will share where the songs came from. The song arrangements will be different... not completely acoustic, but basically acoustic–thus the name UNPLUGGED.

The ascension of TobyMac's solo career has been nothing short of spectacular.  In an era of declining music sales he has consistently defied the odds and has seen his sales increase with each new album release. Having climbed the mountain once with the group dcTalk, TobyMac knows how difficult the journey can be and how much work the process actually takes.  Upon embarking on his solo career, Toby sought to surround himself with a talented and diverse cast of characters, aptly named the Diverse City Band. The result has been a musical fusion that radiates with an unquenchable energy and a penetrating message.
