WEST BRANCH, IOWA– The federal bureau which manages over 400 national parks across the United States, like the Grand Canyon and the Statue of Liberty, will turn 100 years old in 2016. This year the National Park Service launched its "Find Your Park" campaign which begins a two year celebration commemorating its first 100 years of preservation and service to the public.

"The National Park Service has been a successful model of natural and cultural preservation during its first 100 years," said Pete Swisher, superintendent of Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch, Iowa. "Now it's time to think about the next 100 years and how we can continue to connect to our public audiences."

Along with the Find Your Park campaign, national park managers are meeting with park visitors and other members of the public to hear how they would like their national parks to celebrate this centennial.  At Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, Superintendent Swisher is asking to hear which activities  would best renew the American people's sense of ownership and interest in their national parks. A public listening session has been scheduled for July 8, 2015 at the Visitor Center, beginning with an open house to view the permanent exhibits installed in 2014.

The listening session will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a presentation about Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and with a brief discussion on the Find Your Park campaign. "Then it is your turn to provide your thoughts on appropriate activities or areas of emphasis you believe best connects with you," said Mr. Swisher. "The park will use this public input to plan its programming for 2016 and beyond."

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum are in West Branch, Iowa at exit 254 off I-80. Both are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time. For more information go online at www.nps.gov/heho or call (319) 643-2541.

The Figge Art Museum throws it's annual gala tonight (June 5th), and the owners of L&D15 have been busy making sure the night's paper theme is well represented.

Designer and co-owner of L&D15, Lopeti Etu, created not only the chandeliers and table centerpieces for the event's main floor banquet, but he also designed and made several of the attendees' clothing - all out of paper.

Etu designed and sewed a total of five custom paper items - a man's tuxedo jacket, a paneled bustier, a sixties-era women's jacket, a dazzling Roaring Twenties style flapper dress in gold and red, and a black Italian crepe paper strapless ball gown.

Etu worked most of May on these items, starting the Monday after the store's Kentucky Derby party. Etu is on the Figge Art Museum Gala committee, and volunteered to create both the centerpieces and suspended chandeliers for the event. The geometric chandeliers were made from recycled cardboard boxes, while the flowers sitting on each of the banquet tables were made from a lighter paper, then individually hand dipped.

L&D15 is a new kind of retail for the Quad Cities, featuring artists and designers from the area, as well as from other parts of the country. In addition, owners David Balluff and Lopeti Etu use part of the shop as a workspace, hand making custom hats, silkscreening t-shirts and designing clothing.

L&D15 is open daily, from 10am - 7pm, and is located at 520 West 2nd St. between Scott and Western in downtown Davenport. For more information, visit us on Facebook at facebook.com/ landd15 or at landd15.com

The Society of Gilders, in partnership with the city of Pontiac, IL will hold the grand opening of The Museum of the Gilding Arts Saturday, June 6th at 11:00 am at 217 N. Mill St. in downtown Pontiac, IL.

The Museum of the Gilding Arts is a one-of-a-kind museum dedicated to the art of gilding and the history of gold beating.  The museum includes displays on "What is Gilding?", "How Gold Leaf is made", "Where do you see gilding?", and "How to gild."  Also featured is a recreation of the M. Swift & Sons factory, a gold leaf manufacturing company founded in Hartford, CT in 1887.  The museum currently has a gallery exhibit of works of art by members of The Society of Gilders as well as an interactive piece that allows visitors to try their hand at gilding.

Naomi Lipsky, President of the Society of Gilders, remarked, "By creating the Museum of the Gilding Arts, we have not only saved a vital remnant of gilding history, the Swift gold-beating factory, from extinction, but we are opening a window into the gilding arts for all the public to see."  Part of the mission of The Society of Gilders is sharing the knowledge of gilding with the public and passing their techniques along, unlike guilds of the past that historically guarded their secrets.  The Museum of the Gilding Arts helps to even further their mission.

As part of the day's festivities, Dr. Francis Lestingi, member of The Society of Gilders and calligrapher, fontographer, sign artist, and professor emeritus of physics and history of science at the State University College at Buffalo, NY will give a lecture entitled, "Why We Love Gold" at 1:00 pm on the 2nd Floor of the Historic Livingston County Courthouse.  This lecture is open to the general public and is free of charge.

Gold has been used for commerce, decoration and adornment since the beginning of recorded history.  The treasures of the pyramids reveal a very sophisticated understanding of how to prepare and apply gold leaf, and the gold on tomb walls and sarcophagi is as bright and gleaming as it was when first applied several thousand years ago.  Gilders of today are still using some of these same methods and the Society of Gilders, established in 1986, strives to keep the tradition of gilding alive and pass along the knowledge of the art form to others.

For more information about the art of gilding, gold leaf and more, visit SocietyofGilders.org.  To plan your trip to The Museum of the Gilding Arts, contact the City of Pontiac Tourism Department at (815) 844-5847 or VisitPontiac.org.

Accompanying Film: D-Day: Normandy 1944 3D

Launching on D-Day, Saturday, June 6th is the latest film to hit the National Geographic GIANT Screen: D-Day: Normandy 1944 3D.

Narrated by renowned journalist and author Tom Brokaw, D-Day 3D: Normandy 1944 provides a new, penetrating look at this defining moment in history in a truly unique manner. D-Day itself is well-known, yet few know in detail exactly why and how, from the end of 1943 through August 1944, this became the most important location in the world.

"What I was drawn to in this film is that it tells us the story of D-Day in a new way that gives such clarity to one of the most important events in the history of mankind," said Brokaw. "I originally thought this was going to be another traditional documentary featuring grainy black & white footage, but as soon as I saw the first minutes of this film on the giant screen in 3D, I found it irresistible."

The unpredictable nature of water media fused with powerful design principles will be featured at the Beréskin Fine Art Gallery & Studio during the month of July, with an exhibit of local artist Robert Zeidler's transparent watercolor paintings. Bob has worked in the graphic arts field and advertising for over 40 years and you can definitely see the influence in his paintings. Because of that background, his style translates well into the transparent watercolor medium, with emphasis on simplified, bold, colorful shapes.

As an example, he chooses one painting in the collection to showcase his process. Included are a black & white compositional sketch, a quick gestural thumbnail, several "warm-up" paintings, and then the finished piece where it all comes together in a semi-abstract style. It's interesting to understand his methodology and how he manages to "loosen up before the performance" as he puts it.

About his color choices, Zeidler says, "I don't really think about it much." Interesting, since they are unusual and hard to describe. He goes on, "If my composition is strong and the values are arranged correctly, I can use about any color I want. Sometimes I use only two colors; other times I use them all. That's half the fun of watercolor. Since the paint is fluid, it creates new colors on its own; colors that I could never mix or even imagine left to my own devices. This helps keep the painting fresh and interesting, as well as allowing the viewer to see something new each time."

Robert Zeidler lives in Davenport, Iowa, and is a signature member of the Iowa Watercolor Society. He's had paintings accepted in national juried competitions, and received many awards.

The Beréskin Fine Art Gallery & Studio is located in the Bucktown Center for the Arts, 225 East 2nd Street, Suite 104, in Davenport, Iowa, and is open Wednesday through Saturday, from 11am to 6 pm; open until 9 pm every Final Friday. Stanley Gallery at the Muscatine Art Center

FREE ADMISSION

In 1966, Charlie Harper purchased Zeug Garage & Cycle Shop, located at 111 Chestnut Street in Muscatine, Iowa. The shop sold bicycles, motorcycles, accessories, and supplies and provided bike, small engine, and automobile repair and has been located at 1106 Grandview Avenue since 1974. Today, Harper's Cycling is operated by Charlie, his son Greg, and several grandsons and the business offers new bike sales, reconditioned and rebuilt bikes, repair service and a large line of accessories and supplies.

Charlie Harper purchased his first "antique" bike in the early 1980s when a Florida museum closed and was disposing of its collections. This purchase spurred him to continue collecting and he remains an avid collector today.

The exhibit "Pedal Power: Bicycles from the Collection of Charlie Harper" features 26 bicycles dating from 1886 to 1979. Among the earliest bicycles in Charlie's collection are the 'highwheelers', dating to the late 1880s. An 1886 Victor Ordinary Bicycle (with a 50" front wheel) by Overman Wheel Co. and an 1888 Columbia Expert Bicycle by Pope Manufacturing Co. are among the oldest featured in the exhibition.

The exhibition documents the changing technology and design of American bicycles. Charlie's collection includes a 1939 Ladies Mead Ranger, the "Cadillac of Bikes"- a 1953 Black Phantom boy's bicycle, and a 1962 Cycle Truck. Antique bike accessories and equipment round out the exhibition, including lights and lamps, horns, saddles or seats, tires and wheels and bicyclist's tools.

The exhibition opens on June 4th and runs through August 2nd in the Stanley Gallery.
