SPRINGFIELD - May 10, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today issued a statement regarding passage of Senate Bill 1313:

"I am encouraged that legislators have taken this step towards restoring fiscal stability to Illinois. This legislation will help ensure that our retirees continue to have access to quality health care, while also lowering the cost to taxpayers.

"I would like to thank Senate President Cullerton, Senate Minority Leader Radogno, House Speaker Madigan and House Minority Leader Cross for their collaboration and leadership. I plan to sign this legislation and look forward to continuing to work together to make the difficult decisions necessary to return Illinois to sound financial footing."

Author John Logan's Tony Award-winning Red will be presented by an independent group of theatre professionals with numerous area credits. And in a ticket-pricing format never before attempted in the Quad Cities, the play will be offered to local audiences with a "Pay What It's Worth" policy, allowing audience members, after the production ends, to determine their own ticket prices.

A captivating, 90-minute drama about abstract-expressionist painter Mark Rothko, Red won six Tony Awards in 2010 (the most awarded to any Broadway show that year) including citations for Best Play, Direction, Featured Actor, and Scenic, Lighting, and Sound Design. Set in the late 1950s, the production follows the great American painter Mark Rothko (Mike Schulz) - as seen through the eyes of his young assistant Ken (Thomas Alan Taylor) - as they create murals for a flashy new building in New York City. Consequently, Red's audience becomes a collective "fly on the wall" in the painter's studio, as polar opposites Rothko and Ken dive into the most important work of their careers.

Written by acclaimed author John Logan - whose screenwriting credits include the Oscar-winning films Gladiator, The Aviator, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Hugo, and Rango - Red will be staged in Rock Island's Center for Living Arts (2008 Fourth Avenue) on Friday and Saturday evenings, August 17 through September 1. Produced and directed by Tyson Danner, whose area directing credits include the Curtainbox Theatre Company's Time Stands Still and the Green Room Theatre's Doubt, john & jen, and Songs for a New World, the cast and production team will include :

* Mike Schulz (the Curtainbox's Time Stands Still, Speed-the-Plow, "Art"; Augustana College's How I Learned to Drive; the Prenzie Players' Cyrano de Bergerac)
* Thomas Alan Taylor (New Ground Theatre's Mr. Marmalade; Circa '21's Hairspray; the University of Iowa's Akarui, Salvage, How Catherine D__ Got Her Expression, Angel Bones)
* Jessica Denney (New Ground's Mr. Marmalade; the Curtainbox's Time Stands Still; the Gorilla Tango Theatre in Chicago's Quake)
* Lauren Nigri (the University of Iowa's How Catherine D__ Got Her Expression, Angel Bones, Operation Midnight Climax)
* Daniel DP Sheridan (Artistic Director for Davenport Junior Theatre; the Curtainbox's Danny & the Deep Blue Sea, Glengarry Glen Ross; St. Ambrose University's Dakota Jones & the Search for Atlantis)
* Jessica Sheridan (the Prenzie Players' Tartuffe; the Curtainbox's Wit, Fool for Love, Glengarry Glen Ross)

"We know that this play will speak to our audiences as strongly as it speaks to us," says Danner. "And aside from that, it's a thrilling piece of drama."

The team will also be presenting the show under the "Pay What It's Worth" policy, a ticket-pricing format never before employed in the Quad Cities.

Like many "pay what you can" programs, this method allows audience members to determine their own ticket prices. However, unlike those programs, Red's audience members will see the play first and then pay on their way out, allowing viewers to determine what the experience was worth to them.

This innovative pricing strategy is designed to create a completely accessible theatrical experience, regardless of financial means. It will also keep the driving force of Quad City theatre in the hands of audience members. According to Danner, "One way or another, audiences always have the final say in how much and what kind of theatre happens in their community.

"We trust our work and we trust the local theatre audience," says Danner of Red's "Pay What It's Worth" policy. "It's a no-brainer."

By John Crabtree, johnc@cfra.org, Center for Rural Affairs

According to the Center for Rural Affairs, rural counties in 10 Midwest and Great Plains states have higher poverty and greater food insecurity than urban centers in the region. Poverty rates among rural children are most alarming.

These findings challenge conventional policy debates, which often conclude that poverty and food insecurity are primarily urban issues. According to the Center's report, 414,331 people in rural areas, or 13.3% of the rural regional population, were living in poverty in 2010. That same year, 145,065 or 16.4% of rural children in the region lived in poverty compared to 14.1% in metropolitan counties.

Moreover, the growing phenomena of "food deserts" - the lack of outlets for purchasing food - is impacting residents across rural America. And combined with increased rural poverty, especially among rural children, food insecurity among rural families is on the rise.

Addressing these trends requires finding new, innovative ways to create jobs and economic opportunity in rural areas. Unfortunately, the Senate Agriculture Committee's Farm Bill makes no investment in the value-added, small business and rural community development strategies that could revitalize America's rural communities.

Investing in the future of rural America means that economic opportunity and food security for rural families must become a priority - a profound change from those in the Senate's current Farm Bill proposal. Visit www.cfra.org to view the reports mentioned above and if, like me, you hope to set better priorities for the nation and create a better future for rural America.

Dear Rivermont Community,

Today Rivermont students and faculty participate in our annual Service Day.  Although our students are involved in numerous service activities throughout the year this day is special because we try to have every student from Kindergarten through Grade Twelve go out into the Quad City community.  The inspiration came a few years ago when the Upper School decided that there was still a lot to be done after participating in the United Way Day of Caring.  That year they decided to hold a second "Day of Caring."  Lower School students and teachers were motivated by the example of the Upper School and suggested that everyone go out and serve the community.

This is so Rivermont!  Someone gets an idea and does something about it.  Other students are motivated to join in and before you know it a tradition is born.  Call it community, call it positive peer pressure, call it setting the example, it all comes down to leadership.  Leadership begins with one and grows from there.  How uplifting and encouraging to be part of a school community that is focused on developing good ideas and caring habits.  The Rivermont Experience is not just one thing, but rather a collection of ideas and people who seek to advance the entire community.

Kindergarten, First, Second and Third Grade students have been busy making special cards for the residents of the Bettendorf Care Center.  The students and their teachers will travel to the Center to hand deliver the cards to each resident then they are off to Rocket Park to clean the park and have a picnic lunch.

Second Graders decided that they wanted a special project of their own.  The students (with parent help) organized a bake sale to raise money to donate to the Fulton Illinois De Immuigrant Windmill.  Their entrepreneurial efforts will purchase a brick in the memorial walkway.

After taking a river cruise, the Fourth Grade will clean up Butterworth Parkway.  I am certain the views on their river cruise will motivate them to help clean one of our beautiful parkways.

Fifth Graders will take a step toward Middle School as they work on the National Junior Honor Society garden on our campus.  Vegetables from this garden will be donated to our local agencies to provide good, nutritious food.

Our strings students will travel to Manor Care Nursing Home in Davenport to entertain the residents while our ShowChoir will take their talents on the road with five concerts at other local centers.

Middle Schoolers will walk to area elementary schools and read to students, bringing their love of reading to the community.  That done, they will get bags and gloves and clean the neighborhood surrounding our campus.

The Upper School students and faculty will travel to CASI and Cafe on Vine to lend a helping hand.  One group will also participate in the Quad Cities Leadercast and provide support service for this conference and one group will stay behind to work on the campus grounds.

For the Middle and Upper Schools, the day began with a service leadership workshop led by the Davenport Volunteer Connection and Dean Ed Knupp.  Students will explore ways they can become more involved in their local communities while learning how to share their talents.

Intellect, Character, and Creativity!  Everyday but especially today!

Every day, patients in local communities are helped by blood donors who give at blood drives coordinated by generous volunteers. Below are just a few examples of patients recently helped by American Red Cross blood donors:

•  A child with sickle cell disease was treated with 10 pints of type B negative red cells.

•  In just two days, over 100 blood products were needed to treat a child heart transplant patient.

•  A new mother received 2 pints of red cells after delivering her baby

Because of dedicated American Red Cross blood donors, blood products were available for these patients and many others like
them. The need is constant. Approximately every two seconds a patient in the United States needs blood. The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to donate blood regularly this summer, helping to ensure a stable supply for patients in need.

This summer, the American Red Cross Live Life. Give Life. summer promotion is helping to raise awareness of the constant need for blood and to encourage regular donations. Presenting donors between May 21 and September 5, 2012 will be entered  automatically into the Live Life. Give Life. and the chance to win prize packages to GiftCertificates.com. Visit redcrossblood.org/GiveWin to learn more.

IOWA CITY, IA- Riverside Theatre, Iowa City's resident professional theatre company, will produce Riverside Theatre in the Park from June 15 - July 8, featuring As You Like It by William Shakespeare, directed by Theodore Swetz, and The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, directed by Kristin Horton.

This is the 13th season of the four-week event, formerly called Riverside Theatre Shakespeare Festival.

"Emphasizing the outdoor setting will, we hope, remind people about how magical live theatre in the outdoors can be. As the play begins, night begins to fall, the birds sing, the stars come out. It transports you to another time and place," said Riverside Theatre Artistic Director Jody Hovland.

Tickets for this summer's Riverside Theatre in the Park will go on sale on Friday, May 4 at noon.

In As You Like It, Rosalind, Shakespeare's most breathtaking heroine, and her boyfriend Orlando find themselves in the enchanted Forest of Arden, where "all the world's a stage," and where sudden infatuation is as confusing as it is beautiful. As You Like It has everything people adore about Shakespearean comedy: mistaken identity, cross-dressing, madness, mayhem, lust, laughter, and of course plenty of romance, both heartbreaking and joyous.

"This romantic comedy celebrates the importance of love and has a soothing transformative effect on all who enter its world," said Swetz.

Arguably one of Shakespeare's most controversial plays, The Merchant of Venice introduces characters rich in complexity, humor and, most of all, flaws. To help Bassanio win the heart of the wealthy heiress Portia, Venetian merchant Antonio borrows money from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. Amid the blossoming love, romance and comic pursuits of the heart, Shylock's loan goes unpaid. Antonio must suffer the consequences of defaulting on the loan - and therefore pay the penalty: a pound of his own flesh. Post-performance Talkbacks will be held after all performances of The Merchant of Venice.

"Shylock is a man desperately grasping for respect in a world infected with hatred and greed - he is a tragic character who can't escape this infection himself. A more modern play one will not find," said Swetz, who will be portraying Shylock in The Merchant of Venice in addition to directing As You Like It.

The Merchant of Venice and related audience education and outreach efforts are supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Riverside Theatre in the Park is performed outdoors at the Riverside Festival Stage in Iowa City's Lower City Park every summer. This Globe-inspired theatre set against a bluff and adjacent to a willow-ringed reflecting pond, seats 472.

"It's always exciting for us to assemble the summer company -more than 30 actors, directors and designers from New York, Chicago, Milwaukee, Kansas City, as well as right here in Iowa City. Actors play roles in both productions, and often understudy additional roles, so their time here is very full," said Hovland.

Several returning actors will appear in featured roles this summer: Kelly Gibson (Ah, Wilderness!) as Portia, Kalen Harriman (Mary's Wedding, Romeo and Juliet, Love's Labour's Lost) as Rosalind, Jim Van Valen (A Steady Rain, Ah, Wilderness!) as Jaques and John William Watkins (Guys on Ice) as Gratiano.

Single tickets for Riverside Theatre in the Park range from $17-$39 with discounts available for students, seniors, and youth, as well as those wishing to purchase tickets to both shows. Special pricing is also available for groups of 10 or more.

Four Family Nights will take place on June 17, 24, 26, and July 3. On Family Nights, up to two adults accompanying a youth will receive their tickets at the $17 youth price. Family nights are sponsored by funding from the Johnson County Community Foundation.

Tickets can be ordered by calling the Riverside Theatre Box Office at 319-338-7672. The Riverside Theatre Box Office is open Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. After Memorial Day, the Box Office hours change to Tuesday-Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Single tickets may also be order online at www.riversidetheatre.org
