The German American Heritage Center presents local educator Bruce Bufe in the first of a series on personal family immigration histories called "My German Story." This program features the life and times of Franz Gustav Bufe, a German immigrant cigar maker in Moline in the 1880's. He was also an artist, a poet, and a keen social critic of his time. Come experience his poems in translation and explore the themes and views of a common man with an uncommon talent for self- expression. This program is re-scheduled from a spring emergency cancellation.

Members free; public welcome with $5.00 admission; includes museum exhibits.

Independent Scholars' Evenings:

July 21st. 2011

Continued evening on "Propaganda" focusing on the 4 Part BBC series

"The Century of the Self"

Part I: Happiness Machines

Where once the political process was about engaging people's rational, conscious minds, as well as facilitating their needs as a society, the documentary shows how by employing the tactics of psychoanalysis, politicians appeal to irrational, primitive impulses that have little apparent bearing on issues outside of the narrow self-interest of a consumer population.

"Propaganda"

What is Propaganda?

How does it influence us?

What is the Truth? What is a Lie?

In this evening, we will discuss how difficult it is to discern truth from lie when special interests dominate society's opinions.

We will investigate ways on how to recognize the face of propaganda and how to navigate through it.

Michael Grady

Michael Grady has been an Independent Scholar since 2003, having given or facilitated presentations on diverse subjects such as love, fertility, marriage, German culture, aging, alternative physics, alternative psychology, alternative biology, alternative spirituality and holistic healing.

He is the inventor of a water curing kit that he claims can cure many diseases while dramatically reducing the effects of aging, even with a regular diet. Grady refers to himself as a "Thalasopher" in response to his discoveries of the many miracles that can be found in cured water. From 2007 to 2010, Grady operated the nation's first water healing balneotherapy spa, called "Atlantispa", in Davenport. Grady continues to maintain that there is nearly no disease that cured water alone cannot heal.

Grady has lived in five countries, and is married to his Indonesian-born wife of 26 years, Lina, who is an Independent Scholar in classical Chinese Feng Shui. He grew up in Quincy, Illinois and after many years, returned to the river from where he came. He is a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Now, becoming an art collector can be as easy as buying a candy bar or a bag of chips.

The first Art-o-mat in Iowa will start vending art and culture for $5.00 a pull at CornerHouse Gallery & Frame in Cedar Rapids, IA on July 14, 2011, 5-8pm. Artist Clark Whittington, from North Carolina, will give opening comments at 6pm that evening.

Art-o-mat machines are retired cigarette vending machines that have been converted to vend art. Since 1997, Clark Whittington, has been making Art-o-mats that vend "Artists in Cellophane." He now has over 90 active machines in various locations throughout the country with approximately 400 contributing artists from 10 different countries. Most importantly, each Art-o-mat is one-of-a-kind, custom built to the host's desire.

Each "Artist in Cellophane" is art on a block of wood or in a box if it is 3D. It's then wrapped in a piece of cellophane to help it slide out of the machine like an old cigarette pack.

CornerHouse Gallery & Frame is now a host like the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian, Whole Foods, the Studios of Key West, the Contemporary Museum of Honolulu, the contemporary Art Center New Orleans, SUNY Cortland, and the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, just to name a few.

Come by, pick your artist, plug, pull, unwrap and smile.
