“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" at the Adler Theatre -- March 9.

Wednesday, March 9, 7:30 p.m.

Adler Theatre, 136 East Third Street, Davenport IA

Nominated for seven 2014 Tony Awards and the winner of two, one of Broadway's biggest recent hits makes its long-awaited debut at Davenport's Adler Theatre with the arrival of touring production Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, a March 9 tribute to the beloved singer/songwriter boasting a book by Oscar nominee Douglas McGrath and some of the most unforgettable pop tunes of all time.

Telling the true story of King’s meteoric rise to fame as one of the 20th century’s foremost singer/songwriters. Beautiful introduces audiences to its heroine when she is 16 and pitching her first song (“It Might as Well Rain Until September”) to New York music producer Don Kirshner. Soon after, she meets her future husband and creative collaborator Gerry Goffin. In a musical whirlwind, the couple are married, King gives birth to their first child, and the duo make a name for themselves in the music business, knocking out hit after hit. However, while their careers are on the rise, King’s personal life falls apart when Goffin announces that he wants an affair. As King tries to negotiate marriage, adultery, and personal happiness, she is supported by friends and playful rivals Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and although they all compete for number-one hits on the pop chart, King relies on their support to change her life and help her find her own voice.

Set in the vibrant pop industry of the 1960s and early 1970s, Beautiful features a tapestry of musical hits from the creative songwriting teams of King & Goffin and Weil & Mann. Included among the show's songs are such Carole King hits as “It's Too Late,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” “You've Got a Friend,” “So Far Away,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” and the musical's title track, with the stage sensation's other iconic tunes including “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “Who Put the Bomp,” “Up on the Roof,” “The Locomotion,” “You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling,” and “One Fine Day.” The musical opened on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on January 12, 2014, with star Jessie Mueller earning instant raves and an eventual Tony Award. And more than five years later, after 60 previews and 2,418 regular performances, the acclaimed production finally closed as the 27th longest-running musical in Broadway history.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will be performed in Davenport on March 9, admission to the 7:30 p.m. show is $40-78, and tickets are available by calling (800)745-3000 and visiting AdlerTheatre.com.
