Jang-mi Korean Dance & Drum at the Bettendorf Public Library -- September 30.

Saturday, September 30, 2 p.m.

Bettendorf Public Library, 2950 Learning Campus Drive, Bettendorf IA

Presented as part of the Bettendorf Public Library's “Global Gathering: Korea” series, gifted members of the Minnesota dance ensemble will entertain and educate family audiences with examples of Korean folk, court, and ritual dance and music traditions.

Based in St. Paul, the Jang-Mi Korean Dance & Drum group originated in 1984 as a way for Korean adoptees to learn about their heritage and have weekly association with families like their own. In the library's 90-minute presentation, members of the ensemble – led by group leader Brooke Jee-in Newmaster – will display their skills and share information about Korean dance, music, history, and culture. Among the afternoon's showcase performers are guest artist Soo-jin Lee playing the traditional stringed zither instrument the gayageum, and Jee-soo Kim, a visitor from Seoul, Korea, who will demonstrate the art of the hourglass-shaped drum the janggu.

With related programming running through the end of October, “Global Gathering: Korea” is designed to enhance knowledge and understanding about the Korean Peninsula, and also to help foster respect and appreciation for those with Korean roots throughout the community.
