New Ground Theatre's The Nether at the Village Theatre -- February 2 through 11.

Friday, February 2, through Sunday, February 11

Village Theatre, 2113 East 11th Street, Davenport IA

Written by award-winning author Jennifer Haley, the stage cyber-thriller The Nether opens New Ground Theatre's 2018 season in a production running February 2 through 11, with Haley's acclaimed play earning this rave from the New York Times: “As a parable for where we’re headed on that big old highway in the digital sky, The Nether exerts a viselike grip while taking you down avenues of thought you probably haven’t traveled yet.”

With its titular locale a virtual wonderland that provides total sensory immersion, The Nether imagines a world in which those who visit just have to log in and choose an identity in order to indulge their every desire. But when a young detective uncovers the truth behind this initially idyllic, ultimately horrific brand of entertainment, she triggers an interrogation into the darkest corners of the imagination. Winner of the esteemed Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for 2012, Haley's drama set in the not-so-distant-future is both a serpentine crime saga and a haunting sci-fi experience that explores the consequences of living out our private dreams.

New Ground's production of The Nether is directed by Jordan Smith, a veteran of the theatre seen on-stage in productions including the recent Handle with Care, Water by the Spoonful, and Uncle. Jamie M. Johnson portrays the dogged Detective Morris, with the rest of Jordan's ensemble composed of Kevin Keck, Lena Slininger, Jake Pecaut, and fellow New Ground veteran Matt Moody.

The Nether runs at the Village Theatre Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., and more information and tickets are available by calling (563)326-7529 or visiting the New Ground Theatre Facebook page.
