MOLINE, Ill. (January 28, 2014) - The Quad City Mallards' Ty Rimmer has been named Oakley Central Hockey League Goaltender of the Week, the Mallards announced today in conjunction with the CHL.

Rimmer, 21, last week went 2-0-1 with a 1.63 goals against average, a .954 save percentage and one shutout while helping the Mallards earn five of six available points from a three game series with the Beast in Brampton.

Rimmer made 34 saves last Thursday night as the Mallards kicked off their trip north of the border with a 4-1 victory.  The 6' 1", 170-pound Edmonton native nearly blanked the Beast in the series opener before finally allowing a goal with just two minutes and seven seconds left in that contest.  Rimmer would whitewash Brampton one night later, making 35 saves- including 22 in the third period alone- on the way to a 3-0 victory and his second shutout of the season.  Rimmer turned in another 35-save effort Sunday as the Mallards pocketed one point for a 4-3 overtime loss to the Beast.

Rimmer, who has gone 9-8-4 in 21 games this season, is tied for third in the CHL in shutouts and ranks eighth in goals against average (2.82) and save percentage (.910).  This season has also seen Rimmer collect his first American Hockey League win.  He went 1-0-1 and turned in a 2.65 goals against average and a .930 save percentage in three games with the AHL's Oklahoma City Barons after being called up last month.

This marks the second time in under a month Rimmer has earned league-wide recognition.  He was named CHL Rookie of the Month for December.  Mallard netminders have now claimed Goaltender of the Week honors twice this month. Thomas Heemskerk took home the hardware on January 7.

Rimmer joined the Mallards this season after skating in the training camp of both the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers and the AHL's Barons.  Rimmer got his first taste of professional hockey last spring when he played one game for the AHL's Manchester Monarchs after completing his junior career with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL.  Last season he led the WHL in minutes played (3,836) and total saves (2,106) while posting 3.19 goals against average, a .912 save percentage, a record of 24-30-10 and one shutout in 65 games with the Hurricanes.

The 2011-12 campaign was especially successful for Rimmer, who earned WHL First Team All-Star honors after leading the league in goals against average (2.43) and save percentage (.922), finishing tied for first in shutouts (5) and finishing tied for eighth in wins while going 31-12-1 in 46 games for the Tri-City Americans.  His standout efforts helped propel the Americans to the United States Division title.

Over three-plus Western League seasons- during which he played for the Brandon Wheat Kings and Prince George Cougars in addition to the Americans and Hurricanes- Rimmer went 74-65-14 in 159 games and turned in a 3.01 goals against average, a .910 save percentage and ten shutouts.  Before becoming a WHL workhorse, Rimmer spent parts of two seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the St. Albert Steel and Bonnyville Pontiacs.

The Mallards next play at home Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Tulsa Oilers.  Friday is another $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X.  $1 hot dogs and beers will be available at iWireless Center concession stands during each of the Mallards' 11 Friday night home games this season.

Tickets for Friday night's game and all Mallards regular season home games can be purchased at the iWireless Center ticket office, Ticketmaster outlets, through ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.  The ticket office is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on game days from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the second period.

MOLINE, Ill. (January 27, 2014) - Goaltender Thomas Heemskerk and defenseman Nicholas Rioux have returned to the Quad City Mallards from the American Hockey League and goaltender Nick Niedert has been waived, the Mallards announced today.

Heemskerk, 23, rejoins the Mallards from the AHL's Worcester Sharks, with whom Heemskerk signed a professional tryout agreement on January 15.  The 6' 0", 210-pound Chilliwack, British Columbia native served as back-up in a half dozen games without seeing any action for the Sharks.  With the Mallards, Heemskerk has suffered just one regulation loss this season, going 9-1-4 in 15 games.  Heemskerk ranks second in the Central Hockey League in goals against average (2.45) and save percentage (.920).  He is unbeaten in regulation in his last five CHL games, a stretch during which he has posted a 4-0-1 record, a 1.57 goals against average, a .944 save percentage and two shutouts.

His tour with the Sharks was Heemskerk's third AHL call-up this season.  The third year netminder joined the Iowa Wild for a pair of stints as a back-up earlier in the campaign.  Heemskerk is no stranger to Worcester, having seen action for the Sharks each of the last two seasons.  Over two games last year with the San Jose Sharks' top affiliate, Heemskerk turned aside 27 of the 29 shots he faced in 67 minutes, turning in a 1.79 goals against average and a .931 save percentage.  In four games with Worcester in 2011-12, he went 0-1-0 with a 2.14 goals against average and a .921 save percentage.

Heemskerk spent the bulk of his first two seasons in the ECHL.  Last year he went 14-17-3 with a 3.10 goals against average and a .906 save percentage in 38 games with the San Francisco Bulls.  Heemskerk began his professional career in 2011-12 with the ECHL's Stockton Thunder, for whom he posted a record of 13-12-0 along with a 3.27 goals against average and a .893 save percentage in 25 games.

Rioux, 27, comes back to the Mallards after a second successive stint with Iowa.  The Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec, product was first signed to a P.T.O. by the Wild on January 6, briefly returned to the Mallards last Monday and last Tuesday was called up to Iowa for a second time.  In all, he played six games for the Wild during which he went without a point and registered a plus/minus rating of +1.

Rioux has scored twice and totaled 12 points while posting a plus/minus of +11 in 28 games with the Mallards this season.

Rioux joined the Mallards after spending last year with the CHL's Bloomington Blaze, for whom he scored seven goals and totaled 27 points while turning in a plus/minus rating of +3.  The 6' 1", 205-pound blue liner played in each of the Blaze's 66 regular season games and, before moving up to Iowa, had missed just a single CHL game over his first three professional campaigns.

This season is Rioux's second under Mallards coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski.  Rioux first skated for Ruskowski as a rookie with the CHL's Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in 2011-12.  Rioux scored five times, produced 21 points and posted a plus/minus rating of +5 in 65 games with the Killer Bees.

The 31-year old Niedert, who signed with the Mallards for the second time this season when Heemskerk departed for Worcester, made his debut for the club on January 17 in Wichita, making eight saves and giving up two goals after entering what proved to a 7-1 Mallard loss to the Thunder at the beginning of the third period.  Niedert has spent most of the season with the Danville Dashers of the Federal Hockey League while also tending goal in one ECHL game for the Utah Grizzlies this year.  The.  The 5' 8", 185-pound native of Hudson, Iowa, has gone 3-9-1 with a 5.05 goals against average and a .874 save percentage in 13 games with the Dashers.

Niedert played for five teams in four leagues last season- the Gwinnett Gladiators and Reading Royals of the ECHL, the Bloomington Blaze of the CHL, the August RiverHawks of the Southern Professional Hockey League and the Danbury Whalers of the FHL.  Over the course of his nine-year career, Niedert has played for 23 teams in nine different leagues after competing for five teams over three seasons of junior hockey.  He first wore the Mallards' colors during the club's 2011 training camp.

Playing the Percentages
The Mallards, who have played fewer games (35) than any other CHL club, have the league's fourth best winning percentage (.629).

Balance

While the Mallards rank in the top half of the league in goal scoring- fifth at 3.3 goals per game- no Mallard ranks in the top 20 in the CHL in point scoring.

On the Road
In the wake of their successes in Brampton, the Mallards are now 7-1-1 in their last nine road games.

Trouble at Home

The Mallards have gone without a win (0-2-2) in their last four home games- their longest home winless streak this year.

Blanked
Ty Rimmer made 35 saves while shutting out the Beast last Friday. Rimmer came close to posting shutouts on back-to-back nights, stopping 69 of 70 shots over the first two games of the Mallards' series in Brampton.  Last Thursday he held the Beast off the scoreboard until Rob Collins scored with just two minutes and seven seconds left in the third period.  Last Friday's blanking of Brampton was also the second of rookie Rimmer's career- he registered his first shutout on December 13 when he stopped 48 shots in a 2-0 win over the Rush in Rapid City- and the Mallards' fourth this season.  Rimmer posted a 1.63 goals against average and a .954 save percentage over the Mallards' three games in Brampton.

Head to Head

The Mallards and Oilers have split their first two meetings.  The Mallards routed Tulsa 9-3 November 30 at the iWireless Center before falling to the Oilers on the road 5-2 on December 20.  Tulsa's Adam Pleskach (0-5-5) and Ben Gordon 1-4-5) are the top point producers in the season series.  Gergo Nagy (1-3-4) and Frazee (0-4-4) have been the most productive Mallards over the first two games between the clubs.  The Mallards and Oilers will conclude their four-game season series February 21 in Tulsa.  All-time, the Mallards have gone 7-6-0 overall against Oilers and have gone 5-3-0 at home against Tulsa...After playing just one of their first 36 games against Missouri, the Mallards will play nine of their final 30 tilts against the Mavericks.  The Mavs won the season series opener 5-4 in a shootout on November 27 at the Independence Events Center.  Since entering the CHL in 2010, the Mallards have gone 14-12-3 against the Mavericks and have posted a record of 9-6-1 in Independence.

BRAMPTON, Ontario (January 26, 2014) - Andrew Fournier scored with just 27.8 seconds left in overtime to give the host Brampton Beast a 4-3 win over the Quad City Mallards Sunday.  With the victory- their first in six tries on home ice against the Mallards this season- Brampton (21-18-3, 45 points) moved one point ahead of Quad City (19-9-8) into sole possession of fifth place.

Fournier provided the winner by snapping home a centering pass from Rob Collins, who had a goal and two assists.

The Mallards, who did earn a single point for the sudden death setback, forced overtime when Matt Duffy scored a 5-on-3 power play goal from the left wing circle to even the score at three with 4:51 left in regulation.

The Beast emerged with a 3-2 lead from a ninety second stretch that produced three goals early in the second period.  Collins kick-started the fireworks by breaking a 1-1 deadlock with a one timer from the right wing circle at 2:56 of the second.  Just 46 seconds later the Mallards' Thomas Frazee scored from the slot to knot the score at two, but Steve Makway's blast from the high slot would put Brampton back on top only 44 seconds after Frazee's equalizer.

Justin Fox gave the Mallards a 1-0 lead from the right wing circle at 4:44 of the first period.  The Beast tied the game when Tylor Michel buried Matt Caruana's centering pass at 9:13 of the first.

The Mallards were on the power play when Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel's blast from the right point opened the scoring at 6:02 of the first period.

Mike Stinziani doubled the Mallard advantage just eight seconds into the second period by swooping into the goalmouth to sweep the puck home.

MOLINE, Ill. (January 21, 2014) - The Quad City Mallards of the Central Hockey League have offered Super Bowl-bound Seattle Seahawks All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman, who has proven himself "the best cornerback" in football and "ready for bigger and better things", a new challenge - playing hockey for the Mallards.

Sherman's deflection of a pass at the end of Sunday's National Football Conference championship game against the San Francisco 49ers set up the Seahawks' clinching interception and punched Seattle's ticket to the Super Bowl.  In a live interview after the game Sherman declared himself "the best corner in the game" and in an interview that aired this morning on ESPN2's First Take said that he was "ready for bigger and better things."  Since he has reached the top in one sport, the Mallards would like to offer Sherman the opportunity to join the team on the ice and prove himself in another.

"Our roster has been depleted in recent days by a series of call-ups to the American Hockey League and we would be happy to give a world class athlete like Richard Sherman the opportunity to help us combat that roster shortage," said Mallards president Bob McNamara.

The Mallards return to action Thursday night on the road against the Brampton Beast.  The Mallards next play on home ice Friday, January 31 at 7:05 p.m. against the Tulsa Oilers.  Should Sherman wish to stay with the Seahawks- despite having already shown himself to be the best in football- until the Super Bowl on February 2, the Mallards would be happy to welcome him in time for the team's February 5 home game against the Allen Americans.

The Thunder scored the game's first four goals and never looked back.  Wichita opened the scoring when Matt Summers converted Dudas's centering pass at 5:48 of the first period.  Mike Wilson doubled the Wichita advantage by shoveling a rebound home at 11:00 of the first.

Booras scored his first goal from the side of the net just 53 seconds into the second period.  Dudas's power play blue line blast stretched the gap to 4-0 at 10:31 of the second.  The Mallards got on the scoreboard just 50 seconds later when Gergo Nagy snapped in Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel's centering pass but the Thunder would reestablish a four goal lead when Booras pounced on a rebound at the 17:07 mark.

Nick Niedert replaced Ty Rimmer in the Mallard goal as the start of the third period.  Niedert was beaten for the first time when Dudas scored his second goal- again on the power play- from the left wing circle midway through the third.  R.G. Flath's fine solo rush capped off the Thunder win with just under six minutes remaining.

The Mallards dressed just 14 skaters Friday evening because of injury, illness and call-ups.  The latest Mallard to be sidelined was defenseman Matt Duffy, who missed the game after falling ill.

MOLINE, Ill. (January 16, 2014) - Quad City Mallards goaltender Thomas Heemskerk has joined the American Hockey League's Worcester Sharks on a professional tryout agreement while the Mallards have signed forward Justin Fox and goaltender Nick Niedert and placed forward Vladimir Nikiforv on seven-day injured reserve, the Mallards announced today.

Heemskerk, 23, ranks second in the Central Hockey League in goals against average (2.45) and save percentage (.920) and is tied for third in shutouts (2).  The 6' 0", 210-pound Chilliwack, British Columbia native has suffered just one regulation loss this season, going 9-1-4 in 15 games.  Heemskerk is unbeaten in regulation in his last five games, a stretch during which he has posted a 4-0-1 record, a 1.57 goals against average, a .944 save percentage and two shutouts.  Last week Heemskerk was named CHL Goaltender of the Week.

This is Heemskerk's third AHL call-up this season.

Heemskerk turned pro after four years in the major junior Western Hockey League. In his final WHL campaign, he finished second in the league in minutes (3,841), third in saves (2041) and fifth in wins (36) while recording a 2.94 goals against average, a .908 save percentage and a pair of shutouts in 65 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The 2010-11 season was the second straight campaign during which Heemskerk landed among the league leaders. In 2009-10, while tending goal for the Everett Silvertips, he topped the Western League in save percentage (.927), finished third in goals against average (2.34) and was tied for seventh in shutouts (4) while going 24-12-4 in 42 games. Heemskerk's efforts helped the Silvertips earn a share of the United States Division title. Heemskerk joined Everett midway through the 2008-09 season after spending his first year and a half in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice.

Fox joins the Mallards from the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc.  The 26-year old Whitby, Ontario, native leads the SPHL in points (40), is tied for the league lead in assists (24) and is tied for fourth in goals (16).  Tuesday Fox was named SPHL Player of the Week after piling up three goals and three assists in two games last weekend.

The 6' 0", 190-pound Fox split last season between Huntsville and the CHL's Tulsa Oilers.  Fox scored twice and totaled 11 points in 23 games with Tulsa.  He recorded ten goals and 21 points in 24 SPHL regular season games and produced three goals and four assists in eight playoff games while helping the Havoc to the SPHL finals.  As a rookie in 2011-12, Fox notched 22 goals and totaled 46 points in 52 games for Huntsville.

Before arriving in Huntsville, Fox played four seasons of college hockey- two for Salem State College and, after transferring, two for the State University of New York-Oswego.  He registered 58 goals and 153 points in 104 career collegiate games.  In 2009-10 and 2010-11 he helped propel Oswego to both the State University of New York Athletic Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Division III Frozen Four.

Niedert rejoins the Mallards from the Danville Dashers of the Federal Hockey League.  The 31-year old served as backup goaltender in three games for the Mallards last month before returning to Danville.  The 5' 8", 185-pound product of Hudson, Iowa, has gone 3-9-1 with a 5.05 goals against average and a .874 save percentage in 13 games with the Dashers this season and also tended goal in one ECHL game for the Utah Grizzlies.

Niedert played for five teams in four leagues last season- the Gwinnett Gladiators and Reading Royals of the ECHL, the Bloomington Blaze of the CHL, the August RiverHawks of the Southern Professional Hockey League and the Danbury Whalers of the FHL.  Over the course of his nine-year career, Niedert has played for 22 teams in nine different leagues after competing for five teams over three seasons of junior hockey.  He first wore the Mallards' colors during the club's 2011 training camp.

Nikiforov, who has scored six goals and totaled 20 points in 31 games, has been sidelined by an upper body injury.

The Mallards return to action tomorrow night against the Thunder in Wichita.  The Mallards next play at home on Friday, January 31 at 7:05 p.m. against the Tulsa Oilers.  January 31 is another $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X.  $1 hot dogs and beers will be available at iWireless Center concession stands during each of the Mallards' 11 Friday night home games this season.
