3 Retirement Essentials Every Boomer Should Follow for the New Year

Wow, what an amazing market ride over the last few years!  Running on tracks laid by an unprecedented Federal Reserve monetary easing program, the market has once again run to new all-time highs and appears to still have some steam. Or does it?

While no one really knows the answer to this, it is important to remember history as a guide, and to think about the future -- your future.  It wasn't all that long ago that the world's financial system was shaken to its core, leaving many retirees running for shelter from the Ebola-like symptoms displayed by world financial systems.  Fear over which institution or country would next display the almost certain deadly symptoms ran rampant.

I am certainly not echoing the calls of the past and screaming it's time to get your guns and gold.  I am, however, pointing out to consumers the recent and vivid reminders of the importance to get back to the basics with your financial planning this New Year.  If we fail to remember the past, we repeat it.  You have worked too hard preparing for this time in your life.

Let's review three vital elements you should implement in your retirement plan this New Year.

•  Get your annual financial check-up. How can we possibly forget to do this?  Annual check-ups are the number one preventative care tool at our disposal.  While many individuals should be meeting more regularly with their financial advisor, everyone should have at least the minimum of an annual visit.  Problems creep up and this is often the best way to catch them before it is too late.

•  Don't forget to diversify. Are you working with a broker who always wants to sell you mutual funds full of stocks and bonds?  Does your annuity guy think every dime you have should be stuffed into insurance products?  The reality is they are probably both wrong.  Find an advisor this year who knows the benefits of each of these products, but who also knows the value of how they work together.  Diversification is important and it may include each of these products along with other assets such as individual stocks and bonds, Certificates of Deposit (structured and fixed), Business Development Companies, Real Estate Investment Trusts, precious metals, and numerous other investments.

•  Rebalance, Rebalance, Rebalance. With the great equity run up we have encountered since the lows of March 2009, it is vital to remember that we must continue to evaluate our investment portfolios.  While equity portfolios have risen significantly since that time, other areas of our portfolio may not have fared so well, leaving our risk levels in need of adjustment. It is often a good idea to capture some of those hard-earned gains.  You never know -- the next major pullback could be just around the corner.  Be prudent, not greedy!

4 Lessons from the Slope from Sought-after Instructor & Keynote Speaker

If you've ever been told that you cannot do something, but you refuse to give up on your dream, you have something in common with Chalky White.

After repeatedly failing to achieve full ski instructor certification in the United Kingdom, then being repeatedly denied entry into another certification program, White eventually accomplished his goal of being a world-class ski instructor. He's been inspiring confidence in skiers of all levels for more than three decades.

"Adversity is simply the flipside of success; I was told that I had the 'wrong body shape' for skiing and I experienced three consecutive failures at achieving the full British certification," says Chalky, who flew across the world to New Zealand for training and certification there. •  Keep in mind the "calculated risk factor." Of course, giving your all can be scary, because no matter how much you invest in time, effort and money, there's no guarantee it will work. And, even for experienced skiers, standing at the top of a big, steep hill with the intention of throwing your body down it - albeit with the intention of control - can be nerve-racking.

"That's where preparation and systematic training comes in," Chalky says. "You're not simply hurling yourself down the mountain; you're taking a calculated risk, estimating that your training and ability to stay calm and focused will serve your purpose. The same goes with any risk you take in life."

•  Always show up first. Whether you're the most gifted person in your field of passion or, like Chalky, you have the "wrong body shape," be so enthusiastic about learning and working, you're always the first one on the slope. Never take your talent or your experience for granted. The always-show-up-first mentality keeps you humble, hungry and sharp.

"I was extremely fortunate to have a ski instructor trainer in Peter Curtis; after I'd finally achieved my dream of becoming a fully certified instructor, he said to me, 'Congratulations, now go and learn to ski,' " Chalky says. "Initially taken aback at such a key juncture in my life and career, the simple command set me on the path that I still follow today. With each ski season, I try eking out that little bit of improvement that helps both me and my clients."

•  Skiing is balancing on a moving platform. Simply put, skiing is balance. An efficiently poised skier who has found his or her balance can ski harder, better and longer through difficult twists and turns. That's true for skiing and an excellent metaphor for attacking the slalom of life.

"The right balance of physical and mental preparation and determination can take you pretty much anywhere you want to go," he says.

•  Never take "no" for an answer; be willing to alter your plan to achieve your goal. In order to fund his attempt to make his living as a fully certified instructor, Chalky needed money. At age 26, he left his position as a British policeman and took a job that no one wanted as an encyclopedia salesman in Germany.

"Nearly every step along the way, I wanted to quit -- from the tedious job selection process to knocking on my first German door on a cold, wet evening to continuing the position month after month," he says. "But I did it, and I did it well, which taught me the rewards of persevering through the tough stuff. I didn't say 'no,' and I've since lived the life I've wanted. Sometimes, in order to fulfill a dream, one must do things that are not part of the original plan."

Physician Shares Tips for Giving Your Body What It Needs
to Fight Illness

It's a sad statistical fact: The holidays, from Christmas to New Year's, are a treacherous time when it comes to our health.

"There's a spike in heart attacks and other cardiac issues," says Dr. John Young, a physician specializing in the treatment of chronic illnesses through biochemical, physiological and nutraceutical technologies, and the author of "Beyond Treatment: Discover how to build a cellular foundation to achieve optimal health," www.YoungHealth.com.

"The incidence of pneumonia cases spikes - in both cold and warm climates. And deaths from natural causes spike. In fact, more people die of natural causes on Christmas Day than any other day of the year!"

While those numbers are well-documented, the cause(s) are not.

"Stress plays a role, particularly if your immune system is weakened," Dr. Young says. "If you look at how most of us eat from Halloween through New Year's, it's easy to see how the immune system takes a beating and otherwise healthy people become more susceptible to illness during the holidays."

It's basic biochemistry, he says.

"We eat a lot more refined sugar, for instance, which is a carbohydrate that's been stripped of all the vitamins, minerals and proteins that make up a complete carbohydrate," he says. "Our bodies can't use that, so the cells in our digestive organs work overtime, burning up a lot of energy, vitamins and minerals to digest it, and they get nothing back. So, eventually, they grow weak."

So - can we have a little sugar, and good health, too? Dr. Young says we can.

"The occasional slice of pumpkin pie is fine as long as you're also feeding your cells with the nutrients they need - the minerals, vitamins, good quality protein, amino acids, essential fatty acids - to stay healthy."
He offers these tips for staying healthy through the holidays and throughout the year.

•  Get your vitamin D!
Vitamin D is actually a hormone, not a vitamin, and one of our best sources for it is sunshine. Unfortunately, many people work indoors all day, so they get little sun exposure. When they do go outside, they wear long sleeves and sunblock to protect against skin cancer. And, of course, in the wintertime, people in cold climes tend to stay inside. As a result, many of us are vitamin D deficient, and should be taking supplements.

"Vitamin D is crucial to many physiological systems, including our immune defenses," Dr. Young says. "It helps fight bacterial and viral infections, including the flu. It supports our cardiovascular system; optimal vitamin D levels can reduce hypertension, heart attacks and stroke.

"If I feel I'm coming down with a cold, I'll take 40,000 units of vitamin D at bedtime," he says. "The next morning, I usually feel like a new person."

•  Eat your protein - 1 gram for every 2.2 pounds of body weight daily.
In this country, we think a healthy diet means eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. We've forgotten protein, Dr. Young says.

"Our immune system is made up of proteins - our bones are 40 percent protein," he says. "We need protein."

When calculating your protein intake, consider: an egg has about 8 grams, and 8 ounces of fish, chicken, beef or pork have about 30 grams.

Dr. Young does not give any of his patients more than 100 grams of protein a day.

•  Get a good night's sleep, exercise, and manage your stress.
Yup, some doctors' orders never change. Rest, exercise and finding effective, healthy ways to cope with stress are simple ways to pamper your cells.

"One of the many cellular benefits of exercise is that it increases the oxygen in our bloodstream. Every cell in our body requires oxygen, so consider exercise another means of feeding your cells."

It's also important to manage stress during the holidays. With unchecked stress, our body releases large amounts of cortisol which, among other things, suppresses the immune system.

"Take time out to meditate, listen to music, or take a walk in the woods," Dr. Young says. "It feels good - and it's good for you!"

Certified Life Coach Explains How to Circumnavigate Your Own Worst Enemy

Human beings are capable of a rich inner life that, sadly, seems to elude so many, says dating and life coach Deborah Downey.

"I doubt that most of us fully realize just how much worry, doubt and fear we experience on a daily basis; it seems to me that acknowledging this default setting and finding an alternative for well-being should be among our top priorities," says Downey, author of "What Are You Worried About!" "Too often, we are inclined toward trying to be something that, upon closer inspection, isn't what we actually want. Much of this can be attributed to our egos, which persistently tug at our motivations."

Women who think they have to be married and men who are afraid of revealing their true feelings are just two examples of ego-driven ideas that lead us away from personal fulfillment, she says.

Downey, who found romance and happiness later in life despite living with multiple sclerosis for 25 years, says we can have a more worry-free existence. She explains a few ideas for overriding your ego's default settings.

•  "I strive for imperfection and I'm always a winner."
"Most people laugh when I say this," she says, because society is forever challenging us to compete and compare ourselves with others to assess our own value. Striving for imperfection is a reminder that we don't have to drive ourselves crazy with unattainable goals.

"I notice most of us have hidden rules that we carry from childhood that really don't help us as adults," she says. "There isn't any way to be perfect for myself or for any other person who has ever lived. To strive for something unattainable is to strive for failure. Ultimately, allowing for you to be who you are is, I find, liberating and more conducive to overall success in life."

•  A lesson from Spanx founder and self-made billionaire Sara Blakely ... Once upon a time Blakely was just another struggling entrepreneur. In addition to her blockbuster underwear product and her drive, she was armed with a profound idea inherited from her father, an advocate of acclaimed life coach Wayne Dyer. The idea: Don't be afraid to fail big, because it means you put the effort forth on something that you care about, even though the effort was outside of your comfort zone.

"Appreciating one's daily and weekly failures is not a means of encouraging it; rather, it's a way of learning from failure and developing thicker skin so that you aren't paralyzed into future inactivity due to fear of failure or the unknown," she says.

•  "We no longer pursue the tormentor."
"When my mentor coach first said this to me over the phone, I asked her to repeat it three times," Downey says.

Tormentors are all-knowing, all-controlling, arrogant to the tenth degree, super-demanding and impossible to please. Because her parents always demanded the best and never praised Downey as a child, she sought love from sociopaths and narcissists as an adult.

"The clarity of how I brought so much pain into my life by pursuing tormentors was mind-blowing," she says. "Of course, one's own ego can play the very same role."

'There is Always a Way Through' Emotional Trauma, Says One Who's on the Journey

Neglect. Abuse. Divorce. Addiction. These are just a few of the life experiences that can leave children emotionally bruised or worse, causing some to develop dysfunctional outlooks and behaviors that condemn them to perpetual self-victimization as adults.

"We not only perpetuate, but also protect the obstacles that stand in the way of our healing and happiness," says Marta Maranda. "But there is always a way through, no matter what your situation."

The author of "What It Looks Like," (http://martamaranda.com/), a new memoir detailing her own journey of healing, Maranda says she continued to use the defense mechanisms she developed in response to childhood trauma far into adulthood, which only served to block healthy emotional growth.

"As an adult decades after the initial abuse, I was still surrounding myself with similar trauma, and still reacting in the same ways to the trauma, even though those childhood survival tools no longer served me. Basically, the only one keeping me stuck in a dysfunctional and unfulfilling life was me."

Maranda says she didn't realize she played a part in her own dysfunction until the treatment of a family member for substance abuse caused her to think differently.

"I don't drink, use drugs, or have a sexual dysfunction. I've never even had a cup of coffee in my life," she says. "So it was easy to look at everyone else as the cause of my problems.

"But during family therapy sessions, I finally realized that there are two dysfunctional people in an unhealthy relationship, and there is an entire dysfunctional family in an unhealthy family system."

Maranda became a rarity: sober and voluntarily, she admitted herself into a five-week residential treatment center. That's where her healing began.

"But I'm not done," she says. "Healing involves tearing down all those dysfunctional coping mechanisms?fear, anger, denial, justification?and rebuilding your life piece by piece. I still have to do the work every day."

She offers these tips for others whose past trauma has resulted in self-destructive thought and behavior patterns, such as a willingness to remain in unhealthy relationships or an over-reliance on comforts like food, drugs, or alcohol to soothe painful emotions.

·  Look inward for reasons, not outward for blame.
It's easy to find other people or situations to blame for your problems. Even if the initial trauma was inflicted when you were at your most vulnerable, and by someone you should have been able to trust, at some point you have to take responsibility for your own life. "How are you contributing to the dysfunction in your life?" Maranda asks. "The decision to remain stuck in a dysfunctional life is yours. The responsibility to move forward toward healing and happiness is also yours."

·  If you've done it, admit it.
Look fearlessly at the wrong you've done, at the pain you've inflicted on yourself and others through your own dysfunctional behavior, and admit it. "Only by owning it can you change it," Maranda says. "And only through change can you heal." Likewise, look kindly and with humility at the good you've done. Own all that is valuable about you, and build upon it.

·  Information, not shame.
The lessons of healing always come with a choice: information or shame? If you are doing your healing work properly?meaning completely breaking down every defense mechanism you've built to keep yourself blind to your own dysfunctional behavior?the realizations that you've caused others harm, pain, or even extreme damage will come. But eventually you have to choose between continuing to feel shamed, which leads to feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, or accepting the realizations as the information necessary to repair your life. "Much like a doctor needs to objectively understand what's broken to diagnose a problem, so do you need to look objectively at your dysfunction and its consequences to heal it," Maranda says. "Then use your healthy guilt feelings, not shame, as a reminder of what you can't do again."

·  Build a support system.
No one's said it better than Einstein: You can't fix a problem with the same broken mind that created it. Left to their own devices, many people who are convinced they need to change will still seek out environments that support their dysfunctions rather than strengthen their healing. "Change is hard, and healing isn't always comfortable," Maranda says. "That's why people often find their way back to what they know, even if what they know is destructive or deadly." Building a support system of people?whether family or friends, or from a therapeutic or spiritual community?whose perspectives get you out of your comfort zone and away from the dysfunction you know is essential for healing.

Research Shows Women CEOs Falter at the $1 Million Threshold

In terms of growth in business ownership, women have been soaring past men, averaging increases 1.5 times the national average, according to the 2014 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report by American Express Open.

There are nearly 9.1 million women-owned businesses providing jobs for nearly 7.9 million people and generating more than $1.4 trillion, according to the report.

Leading the skyrocketing growth are women of color, who now own one of every three female-owned businesses - up from one in six in 1997. Black women alone generate $49.5 billion a year in revenue.

"What's interesting is that these businesses match or exceed their peers in terms of numbers, employment and revenue - until they hit the $1 million mark," says Dr. Venus Opal Reese, CEO of Defy Impossible, Inc. (www.DefyImpossible.com), a coaching business that helps black women -- and men and women of all ethnicities -- break the seven-figure ceiling.

"At $1 million, they start lagging behind. Despite their bigger-than-average numbers, women's businesses are still smaller than average."

Reese says female CEOs black and white tend to unconsciously start sabotaging their success just as they're growing into greatness. Why?

"From the time we're babies, society - often our own families, too -- measure our worth based on how we measure up to their expectations. So we end up measuring our value on those same expectations, not the values that come from our true, authentic self. That sets up some real conflicts as we build successful businesses," Reese says.

How to overcome that? To "defy impossible"?

Reese, who went from living on the streets as a teen in Baltimore to earning her Ph.D. from Stanford, shares these tips:

·  Know your worth in dollars and cents.
Most women tend to accept the unspoken expectation that people will notice and reward us. That's a mistake. If you over-give or over-work, you actually train your environment to expect you to give without compensation. Start calculating the time, money and resources you bring (or save) your clients or company. Write it down. When you are ready to up your rates or ask for a raise, you will not be depending on good will. You will have hard data to back up your hard work.

·  Trust that you are more than enough.
Too often we look outside of ourselves for validation. Sometimes we think a degree or a title will give us the "right" to be paid top dollar. You are brilliant. Start noticing that when you show up, things get better, they get done, and people soar. When you trust that you are enough, you stop backing down and you start standing for yourself ? no credential needed.

·  Heal your heart.
Money is a heart condition. Think of money as energy. Energy needs a conduit. Most women lead with our hearts. Whenever you are harboring resentment, regret, anger, resignation or fear, you are blocking yourself from your seven-figure future. When our hearts are congested with negative energy, we block our wealth.

·  Invest in yourself.
As her business grew, there came a point when Reese realized she - and it - had outgrown many of the support staff that had been perfectly suitable when she was just starting out. To get the people she needed, she doubled and, in some cases, quadrupled salaries.

"I believe in putting money in me instead of on me," she says. "When I hire proven professionals, I am investing in my peace of mind and quality time with my loved ones. When you 'hire up,' you say to yourself and the Universe, 'I trust you and I trust me to produce a return on this investment tenfold.'

"Now that I have a top-tier team, I have the mental space, creativity, and peace of mind to focus on high-level joint ventures."

·  Learn how to monetize.
Until you can reliably bring in new money, you will be a slave. The best investment Reese says she ever made in herself was learning how to package, position, and price her expertise.

"When you learn how to monetize, you get freedom. You don't have to depend on a man, or a job, or the government for security. And when you learn how to close sales with confidence, your money skyrockets!"

Money Management Has Common Cause with Theological Guidance, Says Money Minister

These days, if you want the kind of prosperity, peace and hope in your life for which the Bible is a guide, you need sound financial advice, says "Money Minister" C. Ernie Nivens, (www.nivenswealth.com), author of "Baker's Dozen: 13 Insights from Highly Successful Financial Advisors."

"I can't tell you how many clients have had a look of fear and dread in their eyes when I first sat down with them. •  1-Timothy 5:3 - "Take care of widows who are destitute." Many senior widows face not only destitution, but also the need for long-term care. With the flood of baby boomers currently retiring, and the fact that women live longer men, scripture remains relevant to today's most important issues, which includes long-term medical care for the elderly. About 70 percent of people over age 65 can expect to need long-term care services at some point in their lives. That varies in cost depending on circumstances, even with the help of Medicare. Consulting a financial planner about implementing wealth preservation strategies long before you or a loved one needs long-term care is a prudent precaution.

•  Proverbs 23:10 - "Don't stealthily move back the boundary lines or cheat orphans out of their property ...." The Bible is filled with ethical guidelines regarding cheating people out of what is rightfully theirs. But modern estate management is rife with moving boundary lines as tax legislation changes the rules. That makes it difficult for many people to ensure they - and their heirs - keep what is theirs. To afford life in retirement and leave a legacy for one's family, the three most important areas to understand are how estate taxes work, critical documents and management tactics. If you're a wealthy individual, for example, umbrella liability insurance adds an extra layer of protection between your assets and a potential lawsuit.

•  Acts 20:35 - "In everything I've done, I have demonstrated to you how necessary it is to work on behalf of the weak and not exploit them. You'll not likely go wrong here if you keep remembering that our Master said, 'You're far happier giving than getting.' " Americans are a generous people, giving an estimated $300 billion a year to charity. From veterans' issues to ALS to children with cancer to homelessness, giving is in the DNA of those who have prospered from a solid work ethic. When giving, know how your money will be spent - ask questions. And, consider giving to organizations that need it; many universities and hospitals are flush with money. Finally, consider giving your time as well - volunteering is rewarded with great satisfaction.

4 Tips for Getting Seriously Healthy from One of the 'Best Doctors in America'*

There's a reason - well, several - why so many diseases are increasing in frequency in the United States, making some that were almost unheard of 100 years ago commonplace today, says Robert Thompson, M.D., an OB/GYN and integrative medicine specialist deemed by his peers to be in the top 5 percent of U.S. physicians.

"The United States is now 46th in men's mortality and the absolute worst country in the industrialized world for first-day infant mortality," says Thompson, author of "The Calcium Lie II: What Your Doctor Still Doesn't Know," (calciumliebook.com), a new book that details the roles minerals play in overall health and how to identify and correct deficiencies and imbalances.

"Based on the current rate of autism diagnoses, there will be no 'normal' male babies born in the U.S. by 2030," he says. "The current rate of diabetes suggests 95 percent of our adult population will be diabetic by 2030. The number of children with life-threatening allergies has increased more than 1,000 percent since 1995."

A perfect storm of corporate power, profits and public misinformation has succeeded in overwhelming the basic biochemical and physiological tenets of good health, says Thompson, who published his first book, "The Calcium Lie: What Your Doctor Doesn't Know Could Kill You," in 2008.

"Mineral deficiencies are responsible for a host of health problems, which are incorrectly treated by drugs," Thompson says. "We're told by the government and the medical community that we should be ingesting certain amounts of vitamin and mineral supplements to prevent disease, like osteoporosis, when in reality, the recommendations lead to other very serious health problems."

Thompson offers these suggestions for Americans to take charge of their health:

•  Get a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) to determine your mineral status.
This may be the most important health test that exists, Thompson says. Only when you and your doctor know for sure your mineral status and important ratios can you adapt your diet, minerals and supplements to work toward proper balance.

Thompson recommends using Trace Elements, Inc. clinical lab in Addison, Texas, because it adheres to the highest standards. The lab accepts only samples submitted by health-care providers, including physicians, nutritionists, and others, so you need to find one who does HTMA and uses that lab. (Individuals who can't find a provider can call the lab for help in locating one; HTMA is prohibited in New York state.)

•  Do not take calcium supplements unless tests indicate a deficiency. We've all been told that we must ingest lots of calcium to ensure strong bones. In fact, calcium is just one of at least 12 minerals in our bones, all of which must be present in the right balance for good bone health. Calcium has been added to so much of our food, it's unlikely most of us are deficient. And yet, people are told to take calcium supplements. Excess calcium can cause kidney and gallstones, arterial plaque, bone spurs, calcium deposits in tissues other than bone, and brain cell dysfunction, brain shrinkage and dementia. Instead of calcium, Thompson instructs all his patients and readers to take a minimum of 3 grams of trace minerals derived from sea salt every day.

•  Salt - sodium - is necessary for digestion, nutrient absorption, cell function and metabolism.
Limiting salt intake is not only the wrong advice for 90 percent of the people at risk for high blood pressure, it also contributes to the lack of minerals in our bodies. Many of us are actually deficient in sodium.

Salt is a mineral, and unrefined sea salt and rock salt is the best source of sodium and ionic minerals. If you are sodium deficient, add harvested pure sea salt liberally to your foods. It is important to use pure sea salt, and not the common table salt, as processing has stripped common table salt of its mineral value.

•  Use only vitamin supplements made from 100 percent organic whole foods that have been vine-ripened.
Almost all of us need supplements because contemporary food supplies lack adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals, thanks to soil depletion. Most store-bought vitamins include just one component of the many complex molecular elements contained in the naturally occurring vitamin source. You need all of the nutrient components to get the full benefits.

The best natural sources of readily available vitamins include raw seeds, stabilized rice bran powder, vine-ripened fresh fruit and berries (vitamin C).

Can Trauma Spur Creativity?

Through Writing

Can an emotional trauma flip a switch in the creative brain? Does profound loss offer a new perspective from which to peer into one's soul?

For LeRoy Flemming, author of the "Timelightenment" series (www.timelightenment.biz/) and volume one of "Soulsplitting," the answer is a resounding yes! And, there's psychological research supporting this idea.

In role-playing, veterans who've endured trauma resulting in PTSD "were better able to represent the boundary between reality and the role-playing, to immerse themselves in the scene, to enact identifiable characters consistent with their setting, and produce complex and interactive scenes that told a coherent story," compared to non-PTSD vets, according to researchers Robert Miller and David Johnson.

The non-PTSD group created more stereotyped, and unimaginative scenes, despite a higher education level and greater role-playing experience, the two wrote.

"I was never diagnosed with PTSD, but I know profound emotional trauma can trip all kinds of coping mechanisms in the brain and soul, including creativity," Flemming says. "When I suddenly lost my mother, it was a profound, life-altering shock. She was fine when I saw her last - Dec. 25, 1999 and she died on Jan. 1. That's what started me writing."

His mother was, by far, the most stabilizing and inspiring person in his life, he says, and losing her rocked him to his core. Rather than seeming abstract, the larger questions in life became the most important, and that's when he knew he had to write.

"I didn't have much of a background in writing," he says. "But since her passing, I've been in close contact with a part of my soul that has spawned several books, all of which have helped me heal."

The creativity caused by pain is a cycle, "because the creative process has significantly healed me," he says. "I'm not surprised that creativity increases within those who've suffered; it makes sense."

How does a grieving individual make something good out of a heart-wrenching loss? Flemming offers perspective.

•  Don't force it. One of the last things a grieving person needs is an assignment they don't want. Grief is a process that entails a host of negative emotions: denial, confusion, anger and more. Prescribing creative therapy to oneself or another before one is ready for it can backfire.

•  Let it flow naturally. We are all unique individuals and, though we know in the backs of our minds that we'll someday face the loss of a loved one, we can't predict how we'll handle it.

"Grieving and creativity actually share some traits," Flemming says. "Both are processes, and both prompt individuals to express feelings in their own terms. When creativity can be used in conjunction with the grieving process, the catharsis can be profound."

•  You have many options. When a person is desperate for an outlet, he or she will often gravitate toward what he knows. A onetime aspiring painter, for instance, may return to that familiar and comforting form of self-expression.

"But the mind can be unpredictable; it may be that gardening is the process that is most therapeutic for a grieving person, even though she never pulled a weed or planted a seed in her life," Flemming says. "In other words, be open to where your intuition guides you. As most grieving people understand, life doesn't always work out as planned. Be open to helpful new possibilities."

4 Ways You Can Help Alleviate the Problem

While most Americans will worry about eating too much this holiday season, 16 million of our country's children live in households that struggle to afford food, according to a 2012 report from the United States Department of Agriculture.

"We hear about 'food insecurity' quite a bit, especially after the 2008-09 economic crash, but I think most people don't have a clear picture of what that means," says Lois Brandt, a former Peace Corps volunteer and author of "Maddi's Fridge," (www.MaddisFridge.com), a children's picture book that asks the question: what do you do if your best friend's family doesn't have enough food?

"Food insecurity means an empty refrigerator. Food insecurity means soda instead of milk. Food insecurity means a child coming to school hungry and unable to focus. Poverty may not look exactly the same in our country as it does in a war-torn region or a developing country, but it is affecting our children and their futures. Sometimes, working parents have to choose between rent and food, medicine and food, or gas and food.

Brandt suggests four things you can do to help prevent childhood hunger.

•  Support non-profit organizations like Feeding America (www.FeedingAmerica.org). Previously known as Second Harvest, Feeding America is a national network of food banks that feeds more that 37 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. It's the nation's leading organization for countering hunger and educating the public about this crisis.

"Public awareness is important," Brandt says. "Many people simply do not know that we're surrounded every day by hungry children."

•  Talk to your children about childhood hunger and how they can help. "When I was a child I opened my best friend's refrigerator to get a snack and was shocked to see it held almost nothing," she says. "I didn't know what to do."

As an adult, Brandt says she's amazed by the number of people who share with her their own stories of childhood food insecurity.

"Rather than sheltering your children from this sad fact of American life, talking to them about it can help nurture their compassion and empathy," she says. "And there's plenty they can do to help, from making posters to raise awareness, to organizing a food drive at school."

Taking action teaches children that they do have the power and ability to change the world for the better.

•  Don't make childhood hunger a political issue. Of course, childhood hunger doesn't exist in a vacuum; issues like welfare, minimum wage, income inequality and access to health care - all of which are heavily politicized - surround the problem. Whatever your take on these topics, realize that no matter the decisions a parent has made in his or her lifetime, children are innocent and have no control of their family's circumstances.

•  Volunteer with your family at a shelter or food pantry during the busy holiday season. While serving or cooking food for a holiday-themed meal at a shelter during Thanksgiving or Christmas does not solve the larger problem, it will affect every person whose life you touch that day. Your efforts and kind words can become a fond, lifelong memory for a child, or remind adults that others care and they're not alone.

Volunteering also has personal benefits, not the least of which is knowing that, despite whatever problems you're facing, you were able to help someone else.
