Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same sex couples have the right to marry, no matter where the live.

"Iowans are no strangers to being on the forefront of fighting for greater civil rights. We have long strived for equality, whether it is based on race, gender or sexual orientation. That is why I am thrilled that the Supreme Court today struck down state laws that discriminate against gay and lesbian couples, effectively legalizing marriage between two people of the same sex nationwide. This is a momentous day in civil rights history, and I am so happy that same-sex couples are one important step closer to the equality they deserve."

$5.25 million grant will implement Sector Partnerships for workers displaced due to bird flu outbreak

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today applauded the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) for awarding $5,250,000 to the Iowa Workforce Development to implement and expand Sector Partnerships in the state. Today's funding announcement will provide intensive worker-centered services including case management, individual and group skill building, soft-skills training, connection to community resources, and assistance in obtaining training, credentials, and certificates to individuals in rural areas who were displaced from the poultry and egg industry due to Avian Influenza. The funding comes from the DOL's Sector Partnership National Emergency Grant program.

Loebsack has been a long time champion of establishing and expanding Sector Partnerships. Portions of his legislation, the SECTORS Act, passed as a part of the bipartisan Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that was signed into law last year.

"I am pleased that the Iowa Workforce Development will receive this funding to make an investment in Iowa's greatest resource: its workers. Many parts of rural Iowa have been devastated by the recent Avian Flu outbreak and this emergency funding will help stem some of the losses our workers are facing," said Loebsack.

Veterans from WWII and Korean Wars view monuments built in their honor

Washington, D.C. - June 2, 2015 - Congressman Dave Loebsack today welcomed the Quad Cities Honor Flight to the National World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington. The Quad Cities Honor Flight brings World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington to visit our nation's capital and Memorials built in their honor.

"I look forward to welcoming each Honor Flight to our nation's capital so they can see the memorials that were built in their honor. Being able to welcome these veterans today was especially meaningful," said Loebsack. "We cannot thank these veterans enough for their service to our nation."

The Honor Flights are all fully paid for, and the veterans are typically accompanied by volunteers who donate their time to ensure that the veterans have a safe trip. This group included 81 veterans. The Quad Cities Honor Flight left from the Quad City International Airport this morning and will return tonight.

Loebsack is an avid supporter of our veterans. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, he has worked to improve care and benefits for our servicemembers and veterans, including expanding Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits for the National Guard; expanding access to mental health care; helping our veterans find civilian jobs; and opening new Community Based Outpatient Clinics to improve access to VA services for Iowa veterans. He also co-introduced bipartisan legislation to eliminate the waiting period for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits for servicemembers wounded in combat.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released new Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) obligations for 2014, 2015 and 2016. Loebsack has been leading the fight to highlight the importance of the RFS to Iowa.

"The new RFS obligations have been a long time coming. While the EPA has taken steps to improve upon its previous proposal, which would have devastated Iowa's farmers and rural communities, there is room for improvement in their newest proposal. The proposal announced today is still lower than the levels mandated by Congress. It is disappointing that the EPA has sided with Big Oil at the expense of rural families across the nation. The good news is that the proposal is not final and it is time for farmers to again stand up and tell the EPA that they deserve better and need to do what Congress has mandated.

"The RFS has proven it works, creates jobs, supports our agricultural communities and lessens our dependence on foreign oil, which is why the EPA must make it as strong as possible. I will continue to fight to ensure that the final rule is good for Iowa."

Iowa's egg producers have had to destroy one-sixth of chickens due to outbreak of Avian Flu

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today called on leaders of the House Committee on Agriculture to hold a hearing on establishing a federal poultry insurance program to provide needed assistance to farmers in Iowa and across the nation. This year, due to the recent Avian Flu outbreak, one-sixth of Iowa's egg producing chickens have had to be destroyed leaving farmers without a safety net to protect their livelihood.  Loebsack wrote to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Agriculture calling on them to hold a hearing to discuss whether a federal poultry insurance program is needed to address future natural disasters similar to the Avian Flu outbreak.

"The men and women who put food own our tables deserve a discussion by lawmakers to decide if a federal poultry insurance program is warranted to assist when unforeseen events out of the control of our farmers happen," wrote Loebsack. "It's time we examine other ways to help protect producers who place their livelihood on the line every day. Thank you for your consideration of a hearing to make sure our producers and farmers are getting the aid they need when disasters occur."

A Grateful Nation

Dear Friend,

Today we reflect on the sacrifices of America's men and women in uniform and keep alive the memory of those who fell during their service to our nation.  As a military parent, I am inspired every day to fight for those who have fought for us - their lives are a testament to the best our country has to offer.

For this reason, I encourage you to consider participate in the Library of Congress's Veterans History Project.  This great initiative collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American veterans and the civilians who supported them from World War I to the present day to ensure that their stories live on.  If you or someone you know has a story, photographs, papers, or other materials that you think should be preserved as a part of veterans history, I recommend visiting the Veterans History Project's website for more information.

Please be assured that as a member of the Military Veterans and Military Families Caucuses, I will continue to work to ensure that we as a grateful nation serve our veterans and their families with the same dignity and honor with which they have served America.

Sincerely,

Dave Loebsack

Iowa's Second District

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack recently introduced legislation to address the importance of increasing access to critical services in schools to address the non-academic factors that affect students' ability to learn. His legislation, the Reducing Barriers to Learning Act, would increase student access to school counselors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, specialized teachers, and community partners such as mental and physical health providers.

"As someone who grew up in poverty, I know firsthand how important outside factors can contribute to the success of the student in the classroom. We have to promote learning in safe and supportive school environments. Knowing who is available to help struggling students and those in need of more specialized supports is critical," said Loebsack.  "The Reducing Barriers to Learning Act will increase student access to services to better address the non-academic needs of students and help them learn in the classroom by addressing issues such as depression, low-self esteem, and speech and language disorders. This will not only set our children up for success both in school and in their future college and career pursuits, but will also support our teachers' efforts in the classroom."

Loebsack's bill would improve specialized instructional support services in schools and clarify the roles of specialized personnel to ensure they are able to best serve students' needs. It would also create a grant program to develop programs and train personnel dedicated to removing barriers to learning.

Washington, D.C. - April 30, 2015 - Congressman Dave Loebsack today welcomed leaders from the Quad Cities to Washington for their annual trip. They discussed economic development issues including the implementation of the Regional Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Hub; transportation issues such as the I-74 Bridge and other infrastructure projects; as well as the importance of the Rock Island Arsenal. Each year, Loebsack meets with community leaders and local Chambers of Commerce groups from around the state to discuss issues important to their region.

"I am glad leaders from the Quad Cities could come and discuss important projects aimed at moving the region forward," said Loebsack. "Meeting with the local leaders in Washington gives me a very important opportunity to continue the conversation we have when I am in the district. I look forward to working alongside them and being a strong voice for the regions priorities."

Washington, D.C. - The bipartisan, bicameral Iowa delegation, led by Congressman Dave Loebsack, today called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide any assistance they can under their statutory authority to help affected states combat the recent outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H5N2), also known as bird flu. In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, the Members of Congress detailed the vested interest that the USDA has in containing and preventing the spread of this outbreak. As of today, Iowa has had eight confirmed cases and four probable cases of bird flu, affecting more than 10 million birds. Iowa is the nation's leading egg-producing state.

"Iowa leads the nation in egg production, producing approximately 16.5 billion eggs annually, and is ninth in turkey production. Within the past month, the HPAI H5N2 virus has impacted one-sixth of Iowa's 59.5 million egg laying chickens and over 100,000 turkeys," the Members of Congress wrote. "While there is no known risk of HPAI H5N2 transferring to humans, stopping the spread quickly is necessary to safeguard our country's poultry and egg producers and ensuring a stable domestic supply of these foods that are an integral part of healthy diets for millions of Americans. Our nation has a vested interest in containing and preventing the spread to other Iowa communities and states, and ensuring consumers are not adversely impacted by increasing egg and poultry prices."

In the letter, the members of the Iowa delegation called on USDA to:

·         Provide communities battling the avian influenza with all available assistance;

·         Provide Members of Congress with time-sensitive updates on new cases and requests for further resources to help turkey farmers and egg producers; and

·         Inform Congress of the economic impact that the poultry and egg reductions will have on producers and consumers.
