Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after it was confirmed that another outbreak of avian flu has been discovered in Northwest Iowa.

"With the second confirmation of avian flu in Iowa, it is more important than ever that Iowa has all the resources it needs to prevent it from spreading any further. While there is currently no risk to people consuming poultry, stopping the spread quickly is necessary to safeguard both the health of Iowans and the egg producing industry. I will continue to closely monitor the situation and work to ensure local and state governments have the resources necessary to combat this dangerous disease and protect the public's health."

Original works by local high school students now due April 10th

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today that high school students in the Iowa's Second Congressional District may now submit their original artwork to be considered for the 2015 Congressional Art Competition. The annual competition is hosted by the United States House of Representatives to recognize talented young artists from across the nation. The winning student from each district is invited to Washington, D.C. to attend a reception held in their honor and will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Due to local schools schedules, the deadline for entries to be received has been extended to April 10th.

"The vast amount of talent that Iowa's students display year after year continues to amaze me. The creativity of our talented young artists demonstrates that the arts are thriving in Iowa," said Loebsack. "For a young artist, having your artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol is quite a remarkable accomplishment. I look forward to seeing this year's entries and meeting the winning student."

Once again, to make the contest as easy as possible and open to as many students as possible, this year's winner will be chosen by the public through an online vote. Details on how to submit art work are available by clicking here to visit Loebsack's website. All entries must be received no later than Friday, April, 10th at 11:59pm. The artist of the winning piece will receive two round trip tickets to Washington, D.C. to attend the reception and unveiling of their artwork in the Capitol (all other expenses must be covered by the winner). For additional details about the competition, students or teachers should contact Jared Mullendore at 563-323-5988 or by email at Jared.Mullendore@mail.house.gov.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after House Republicans passed their budget for Fiscal Year 2016.

"It has long been said that a budget is a set of priorities, a vision of where one believes the country should be headed. The Republican-supported budget that passed the House today fails to reflect the priorities of Iowans I meet every weekend when I travel around my district. This budget ends the Medicare guarantee as we know it, disinvests in education, cuts important funding for rebuilding our infrastructure and eliminates vital job training programs. At a time when our economy is still continuing to recover, this is the wrong approach to putting our nation on a sustainable path forward. We need to pass a budget that invests in our nation's future by growing our infrastructure, providing retirement security for seniors and making sure any child who wants to can afford to attend college. We need a budget that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-to-do."

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today on the situation regarding the possible deportation of Iowa City Pastor Max Villatoro.

"When talking about immigration reform, which Congress has continually kicked down the road, many numbers and statistics are thrown around. The situation involving Max Villatoro puts a human face on these numbers and amplifies the need for action on comprehensive immigration reform. I feel there must be a realistic and pragmatic but tough system that enforces the rule of law and ensures accountability while not tearing apart families who have been here for many years. Mr. Villatoro is a loving husband and father, model employee and a dedicated member of our community. As a compassionate country, we cannot allow Mr. Villatoro's family to be torn apart."
