IOWA CITY, IOWA (November 16, 2022) — More than forty current students at the University of Iowa are helping to shape the future of their alma mater by serving on one of eighteen charter committees that advise institutional leadership on topics ranging from diversity and teaching to research and intercollegiate athletics.

The charter committees are another example of the University's commitment to the long tradition of shared governance in which university-wide policies and initiatives are made in collaboration with the campus's many leaders and shared governance representatives.

Carson Gregory of Davenport (52803)

Campus Planning

The committee advises on the establishment of general policies for the orderly, efficient, and attractive development of the University's physical campus and facilities, giving particular attention to aesthetic and ecological considerations; on proposals for major development or building projects and proposals for major revisions in ongoing projects, giving consideration to compatibility with existing standards and policies and site selection; and on policies of space allocation and utilization, major modification, or reallocations of existing facilities and the response to development proposals of all affected elements of the University.

Council on Teaching

The committee provides a forum for discussion of present and future needs in the area of teaching and recommend programs for meeting these needs; seeks, evaluates, selects candidates, and establishes guidelines for university-wide teaching awards, including but not limited to: Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards, the President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence, Instructional Improvement Awards. Similarly, seek, evaluate, and select candidates for extra-university teaching awards, including US Professor of the Year; and advises on development of proposals for outside funding to support curricular development, equipment for teaching, and any other proposals related to the teaching and learning effort of the university.

Financial Aid Advisory

The committee reviews and makes recommendations to the President regarding all forms of student financial aid and assists the Office of Student Financial Aid or other university office administering financial aid in communicating all financial-aid policies to the university community.

Clayton Riggleman of Bettendorf (52722)

University Libraries

The committee advises on policy regarding the growth of the resources and services the University Libraries provide; advises on policies regarding the assignment of facilities within the libraries and the availability of services, which render the libraries more useful to members of the university community and the public; advises on the coordination of the branch libraries and their services and resources with those of the Main Library and the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences; and advises on the use and development of library facilities, including the Main Library, the branch libraries, and off-site storage.
