ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (August 8, 2019) — People are in need in the Quad Cities. According to the River Bend Food Bank, 1 in 8 people in the local community don’t have access to enough food. And according to a June 2018 QC Times article, 38% of Scott County residents can’t afford basic needs, including medical care. Christian Care, a homeless-services provider in downtown Rock Island, recently received two generous grants from local donors to help support key programs to meet some of these needs.

The Doris and Victor Day Foundation awarded Christian Care $6,000 to help support our community-meal site. This program serves an average of 45,000 meals per year and is the only meal site on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities that serves meals every day.

The Rock Island Community Foundation also awarded Christian Care $2,000 to help support our Community Parish Nurse Program, which saw over 375 visits in its first year of operation. The parish-nurse program provides basic, consultative medical needs to Christian Care’s residents and non-residents alike and is available on Wednesdays during lunch at Christian Care’s community meal site (11AM-1PM).

Christian Care is honored to be a benefactor of these gifts from these two foundations, both of which are renowned in the Quad Cities for their history of community support and impact. The Doris and Victor Day Foundation was established in 1987 for the betterment of Rock Island and its surrounding communities. The Rock Island Community Foundation strives to help fund “groups that make Rock Island a better place to live,” a mission it has pursued since 1967. Christian Care gratefully acknowledges these wonderful gifts that will help important programs aimed at serving people in need.

Since 1916, Christian Care has provided safe shelter, food, clothing and other supportive services to men experiencing homelessness in our community and is the only homeless men’s shelter in the Illinois Quad Cities. The mission of Christian Care is to empower the homeless to make positive changes in every aspect of their lives.
