WEST DES MOINES, IOWA (July 7, 2026) — Des Moines University (DMU) Medicine and Health Sciences and Central College, a private liberal-arts institution in Pella, Iowa, have announced a comprehensive partnership designed to expand pathways for Central students who wish to pursue graduate-level health-sciences programs. The collaboration supports student success while helping strengthen Iowa's health-care workforce.
"This partnership will not only benefit DMU and Central College, but also the state of Iowa at large by attracting academically-strong students into our programs and preparing them for careers in medicine and health sciences," says Angela L Walker Franklin PhD, DMU president and CEO.
"Our society needs these professionals, and we are excited to partner with Central to create more opportunities for students to step into these vital roles."
Beginning in July 2026, Central students who meet academic benchmarks will be eligible to apply for one reserved seat annually in the following DMU programs:
- Doctor of Podiatric Medicine
- Doctor of Occupational Therapy
- Doctor of Physical Therapy
In addition, qualified Central students will be guaranteed interview opportunities for DMU's:
- Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
- Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies
- Master of Science in Anatomy
- Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences
- Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences
The partnership also introduces accelerated pathway options. Central undergraduate students and DMU OTD students may participate in a 3+3 program, allowing them to earn both undergraduate and graduate credit concurrently.
Central students will also have opportunities to begin graduate coursework early and accelerate their completion of a Master of Public Health or Master of Health Care Administration degree.
These fast-track pathways enable students to save time and money while gaining early exposure to graduate-level education.
"Central College looks forward to providing students this superb opportunity to pursue careers in a wide array of medical fields," says Mary Strey, vice president for academic affairs at Central.
"By obtaining a foundational education that spans behavioral sciences, arts, and humanities, in addition to the sciences, Central students are well prepared for success. Central and DMU graduates will have a quality education to meet the needs of Iowa residents and employers."
